Seriously though When I do make it back accross the bridge I would like for you to teach me some MX tricks because they would be helpfull for when I get out onto the track during HS races Eric when you run the nationals its nothing like local races those guys are super fast GNC & GNCC are the creme of the crop most guys run C so they can finish respectivly,Im not ashamed to run C in GNCC because its tough to finish well.

Yea, thanks for the compliments Eric, I wish I was as fast as you thought I was!!!!! lol
I personally start in 2nd gear......The way I look at it is, the more ground you loose in the first turn, is the more ground you have to make up throughout the race...Granted with XC you have alot more time to do that...I only have 3 or 4 laps to try and catch the leader if I get a bad start....Then I get behind some slower guys, and the leader is gone!

i don't worry about the start too much, on the first lap there usually is someone hung up anyways. i always do better chasing people down than i do trying to lead. it's just a matter of getting a good pace and then pushing it in the sections you know you can. if you have a good clean pace you usually do pretty well.

Cletus, I was at Tomahawk on Saturday as well. That third double usualy has a better take off and isnt to bad to get over. I had to preload alot on Saturday to clear it because the take off was cut down on the bigger of the doubles. Once they peak it back up for the race this Sunday you got it and can pull a nice lead on the guys that wont jump it.

What kind of quad where you on? Yeah I can clear the first 2 but I have never tried that third one. If my quad was setup better for mx I might try it, but I really haven't jumped all that much. That big tabletop in the back is fun. You can hit that pretty much as fast as you want.

AWE MAN......You're talking about me:( .
I STILL want to do the MX stuff. Shoulder is feeling better all the time:) .
I need to find the quad MX track for guys like me....wussies:D . I look at all these quad videos of tracks out west and find that just about all of them have much more gradual take-off and landing areas then just about anything around here. Stuff out there looks SO fun! Come up short?...no problem. I tend to think that if the "local" MX tracks were a little more "safe", ( for the average guy), there would be a much greater turn out of entrants for the races. Not to mention alot less helicopter rides out for the guys who mis-judged their jump speed. You can still have jumps that only the "top few" can make....a large double or even triple that still requires skill, but yet won't kill those who can't take on that type of jump yet. Take an honest look at the level of riders at your "Landings" or "Rausch Creeks" on any given weekend. Very few are even close to trying to clear or make the jumps,(quads). It's a small handful that is actually doing it or even trying. Most everyone is rolling the steep or "blind landing" jumps. I've got to say though,Tomahawk seemed to be one of the most "all" rider friendly tracks that I've been to around here. I think if I were to jump into the MX scene, that track may be a good start. Sorry to get on the soap box:rolleyes:

Chris,
i wholeheartedly agree with that. If the tracks were a little safer with the jumps i think they would attrackt a larger crowd. This subject has been discussed at great lenghts in most magazine in the last year. Even the big names where complaining a little because they get hurt and then can't ride for their team. It is very possile to design tracks that have by passed for the big jumps and make the bypass manadatory for the lower classes and help them ease into the MX scene while racing and when it feels right you move up to the next class where some of the harder jumps are incorporated. I'd really like to do MX too and even would buy a seperate bike to do it if it was so friggin intimidating. :D
So Chris, are you comming to TOmahawk as out media man?

You know what sux abot riding on an XM track. If you dont do some of the jumps it actually tires you out more than if you actually did the jump.
Are all tracks as tiring as easton? at easton it doesnt seem like you ever get a break. you come ofver a jump and there is the turn already and on and on. i guess its a good conditioning track for stamina.

Hey Chris, Seatec, and all others that have commented on the Supercrossing of our MX tracks. There is an excellent artical on the D-7 web page (http://www.amadistrict7.com) . It talks about just this topic of how they have changed MX into Supercross and how the riders are not liking it but the spectators want more. If you look at Rausch creek that track is just way out of any C-class riders ability to hit all the jumps, so why run them on it!? I think that C-class should be an extended version of the beginners track at Easton. I have not talked to one single person that did not say that the begginners track at Easton was an absolute blast regarless of skill level. I truely belive that if the begginners track was made longer and incorporated the same level of dificulty and even just a little harder it would be overwelmed with race entries from teens to audults like me not going out to race because our lives depend on it or trying to make careers out of it but just because we are weekend warriors and just want to have some fun screwing around on an MX track in a race setting that you might even get a trophy if you have a good finish. (damn that was the worst run on sentence ever) This is the very reason that I think the HS races are so appealing. From everything I have read and have been told that Tomahawk could really cash in on this situation being they sell themselves as being "old school MX". They just might have me out there in an MX race this year if thier track is as advertised. Well this is just my .02 on this topic and I figuered I wanted to get on my soap box too because I do like the MX stuff but the tracks that have it are not catering to all riding abilities....... This would be good info to email to the tracks.

Seatec, as for a checklist. . . turn the key and hit the start button if she fires then your ready.:) j/k man I'd just check air pressure, oil, a clean air filter, and any bolts you just worked on. on the starting line just run through all the kill switchs (key, little red start/stop button, kill switch) and make sure your bike will start. i have actually tried to start my bike with the power off.

Seatec right now should be a good time to look for a mountain bike. I got mine from Dicks exactly a year ago to the week and I got a leftover model Mongoose Pro full suspension for $500 wich was less then half price. I really wanted a GT NRS(?) but it was almost 2g's and I just could not pass up this deal on an almost as nice bike. Moral of the story shop around!!!!

Seatec Bicycle connection has been there since I was a little kid I remember when they opened (my dad used to work on the opposite corner at BG&E). My mom and dad bought me a brand new Mongoose Super goose with Skyway tuff 2 mags I was the chit in my nieighborhood. I bought all of my gear from there for years. I used to race BMX at Orgeon Ridge (that track is long since gone) this was in 1979-82 I think wow brings back some old times..........
Anyway shop around because right now is deal time on mountain bikes. Try the shop at Perring plaza by Home depot (Joppa and Perring Pkwy). Be careful it easy to get carried away with stuff you dont need! I reccomend good rims and midline controls. Disc brakes are awesome but not neccassary. Good luck!

Good luck! Get a stationary bike:D

stationary bikes get boring real fast. I used to mountain bike a lot with my brother back in the Netherlands. We had vaery lare woods 2 minutes away from my home. nothing very techincal just very fast riding withg a few hill climbs and some fast downhills. loved it.

about that 13 tooth sprocket. i relly think that i should put a 13 on the front since its pretty tight and rocky at Tomahawk.
I think ill have one overnighted from sprocket specialist because i dont think anybody has one in stock and can overnight it to me.

Seatec,
Get a good pair of "sport" hiking shoes and hit the same trails we ride. Just an idea cuz when I do my trail " maintanence" here aroud my property, it's one heck of a work out. Sometimes I cover several miles, clearing out fallen limbs or hacking down sticker bushes. A good workout and serves a purpose. Plus you get to see all the things you normally miss when blasting though on the quad. Less expensive, although not as exciting, than mountian biking. You know the type of hills I got over here....MAJOR WORKOUT!! I've even carried the chainsaw a couple of miles, up and down the trails....phew! Thought I was gonna pass out. That thing started out so light but by the time I made it home, I swear it got 50lbs. heavier :D
Eric....Well said on the MX tracks. That beginner track at the Landing is SO fun. I'd love to ride a "full" sized version of that. Lot longer and a little wider please:) . Does anyone remember the "old" quad track at Rausch? It had big tabletops with very smooth gradual landing ramps. No huge gaps. Didn't have to be a superhero to have fun on it.

Just my opinion...
Leave the gearing alone. That quad has so much power I can't see why you would need to alter it. It's got more than enough ***** to pull you as fast as you would want to go in any situation.
Relax and quit foolin' with it:D Do you have an obsessive compulsive disorder or somethin'? :blah:

im not worried abotu the speed but when i was in the tight stuff aty SugarHill my clutch really got a workout. i could actually let it sit in first gear and idle it without clutch. not good. Also, when i have a lower gear and get tired i can putter it around without having to stop because i cant keep the pace up. dont want to end up like my first race on the bike where i had the stock gearing on it for my first HS.
i think with the 13 on i wont have to use the Clutch so much and thus dont get as bad a arm pump.

Seatec I told you it would'nt be as tight as Sugar hill that place is really tight, during a race there would be real bad bottlenecks if alot of the race was that tight. Im running 3 1/2 psi in my razor 2's,4 if you feel safe with that but it will be a rougher ride.

I'm not saying it isn't fun and there are sections where your rubbing tires on both sides. I would consider Tomahawk tight out of all the tracks D-7 runs. As for rocks, they aren't the only thing that can make a track tough. The little stumps and rutted out off cambers can be tricky in a race. This track is a lot different than Budd Creek, which is the only track some of you have run. But hey this is just me opinion and you guys can decide for your self on Sunday.
and by the way it wasn't the quad guys *****ing it was the dirtbike riders who said it was too tough.

Cool if you have the round connector then you have the right one. I did talk to Jim and he is going but he is going to race his CRF450. He might want to leave early so this might work best. One more question do you have an electric brake controller in your truck(little black box about the size of a ciggarette box with controls on it) you wont need it since the trailer is light but it does help when you have to stop in a real big hurry
Glad to hear you are comming Chris:macho

Tomahawk sounds like it would be alot of fun.
I just got back from Durhamtown Plantation in Georgia late Tuesday night. Pretty cool place to ride. They had plenty of trails to ride on, one even had jumps throughout the trail. They had 2 mx tracks for the quads to ride. Not too hard, and they were really fun to ride. I did all but 1 of the doubles on my 450r. I used Pappy's suggestion for setting up the suspension on the 450, and I gotta give it a thumbs up. It was very smooth on the track and on the trail. Now I have to get new shocks for the 250r! I didn't want to ride it because the 450r ran so good down there. We need places to ride like that around here.

The damn thing was falling appart on him at easton. had to give him a bolt so the crossbar wouldnt fall off.
Nah, man i thought it looked pretty sweet too. Sounded real good too.
Did we ever figure out if we can al park together at Tomahawk?
CLetus, youve been there. how is the parking layed out? shoot we go for a croner somewhere?
Also, how we do the refueling (if we need to)
At budds is this neat bearm that comes out of the woods is adjacent to the left side of the parking field. YOu can leave your gas can right there.

This was over a year ago I didn't even know it was you at the time just remembered seeing the bike and you describing it on the site.
Seatec, the parking is a lot smaller than Budds, but it's still a pretty big field. When you pull in the drive way we usually park to the right, somewhere up by the treeline. I don't think you will need to refill, my buddy can race an hour and a half on a full tank on his YFZ.

Any of you guys know about the big bore kits for the 400ex, I need new rings so I figured I might as well drop in a high-comp piston while I got it apart. Like whats the best size to throw in. Id really like to stay on pump gas even though I can get ??? (cant remember the name, c-12 maybe) for 4 bucks a gallon.
Ericthered rdr
04-16-2004, 05:56 AM
Chucked... stick with pump gas and go with the 416cc. Do a search on here about the topic and you will find all the info you need. I rode Honda5's 400ex and it had a stage2 cam and an ingnition box and T4 pipe. It was plenty strong with the stock bore. My friend at work spent a lot of money on a 440 kit and was not impressed with the cost to performance ratio. My recomendation is to take it to 416cc, new cam, ing. box and port work and I think you will be surprised at how much you like it plus you will notice the true benifit of that big gun after all the mods.JMO

what size mm is the 415, 87? Yea I already ordered my dyna ignition, stage 2 cam, I need new valve seals so Im gonna go all the way and get it ported out all nice, along with bigger valves. Im gonna start on it monday since its going to be almost 80 degrees this sunday.

04-16-2004, 08:49 AM
yea. don't spend the money on the 440 kit. I had a slow 400ex (don't know why just slow from day one) the t-4 helped some but, when I put the stage 2 cam in WOW! It pulls so much harder. you won't be able to put a stock pipe back on I tryed to so I could take it in a state park and the bike would hardly run.

Those three are pretty close. The one at Wisp is close the the Oakland races on the d-7 schedule. At the nationals you are never alone on the track so it is really good at becoming a faster rider. You are constantly being pushed and an extra half hour isn't too bad on the body.
