Despite being their first SxS / UTV Race Jordie Reed & co-pilot Rob McGee claimed their spot on the SxS Open Class podium at the 2013 Heartland Challenge

“We decided to come down and try the race out, a bunch of buddies always do it and it sounded like fun. We didn’t have a great start; we got hit on the launch and about tipped over. We finally got going and then got stuck behind a Can-Am for a few laps because I didn’t know how to pass yet, but I figured that out. Once I got in the groove, we started knocking off laps and it was great from there. The RZR XP 900 was awesome. All we had to do was stop, put gas in it and drive it,” regarded new driver, Jordie Reed after the race.

Team Penland - Can-Am Maverick 1000 SxS / UTV

Mike Penland & Co-Pilot Mike Edwards grabbed the final spot on the SxS Open Class Podium in their Can-Am Maverick 1000 SxS / UTV

Mike Penland turned sixty in June and it seems he just keeps getting better with age. Penland put his Can-Am Maverick 1000 near the front and not only earned the final podium position, but also took the honors of highest finishing Can-Am.  Penland and his co-pilot, Mike Edwards, were last off the line and had to deal with thick dust. The pair didn’t let their bad start deter them from looking for the front runners; they took the jumps, bumps, rocks and sticks inch by inch and made their way to the front.

Penland and Edwards charged from fourteenth on lap one to ninth on lap four. They then spent eight laps in the fifth spot before advancing to third on lap eighteen. The finished twenty laps of the endurance race to claim the final podium position.

“I am just so tickled. I can’t tell you how excited I am. The Maverick was amazing. The Maverick suits me perfect, we never skipped a beat. We made one pit stop for fuel and had no issues. I just wish I had as much steam left in me as the Maverick does at the end of the race,” said Penland.

Tim Farr grabbed the Holeshot in the SxS Open Class in his JB Offroad / Can-Am Maverick 1000R SxS / UTV at the 2013 Heartland Challenge

Team JB Offroad / Can-Am finished in fourth place in the Open UTV. Tim Farr grabbed the holeshot in his JB Can-Am Maverick 1000R and had the early lead before falling to second behind his teammate, Kyle Channey. Farr ran in second until lap three when he blew his clutch apart; he was towed in and his pit crew quickly fixed the Maverick and sent him on his way. He was a few laps down, but charged to make up as many position as he could. He went from 18th to 14th before claiming the tenth spot on lap ten. Farr continued to make smart passes and took over fourth on lap eighteen.

Tim and Julie Farr placed fourth in the SxS Open Class

“I am really happy that we were able to get fourth. After the long pit to fix the clutch I really didn’t think we could make up all the time. I wanted to get a podium, but in my head was hoping for a top ten. Once I got going again, I really put the hammer down. The Maverick was working great and aside from the dust the track was awesome. I just kept my head down and tried to make up any space I could. I am really excited that we pulled off a fourth after the trouble that we had,” said Farr.
