Josh Frederick Interview
::Continued::
ATVriders.com:
Since being paralyzed, how difficult has it
been making adjustments in your home?
Josh
Frederick: We are lucky with our set up we didn't have
to make any real major modifications. Luckily,
I have great family and a great group of friends
that did all the modifications while I was
at the hospital, so when I came home, nearly
everything was ready for me.
We had to make
a few changes in the bathroom mostly to the
shower. We took the carpet out of my bedroom
and put in hardwood floor, so I could get
around better. We changed a few ramps coming
into the house, and we put a little concrete
down to make things easier, and I can’t thank
my family and friends enough for all their
help with these changes.
ATVriders.com:
How has your race family helped you with all
the fundraisers and events they have put on
to support you?
Josh
Frederick: It was amazing to see the amount of support.
Being on the receiving end of it this time
is really humbling.

Seeing the amount of money
and support people donated is just amazing.
Hopefully someday I can repay them, I just
don’t even know where to start. It makes me
emotional the amount of love and support I
got.
ATVriders.com: How old are your children now,
and how are they adjusting to everything?
Josh
Frederick:Madelyn is ten, Gavin is seven, and Jackson
is four. They have been amazing through this
whole thing. It doesn’t even phase them, and
they act like it's not a big deal. They have
helped me out a ton. It's been fun to be home
a lot more with them and go to all their various
activities.

his children, and while we visited,
he threw some passes to his son, Gavin. |
ATVriders.com:
Since your injury, it seems as if you've gained
a lot of mass and strength in your upperbody.
Josh
Frederick: I haven't noticed it as much myself, but everyone
seems to notice my arms and chest getting
big. When I look at pictures, I can tell,
and it makes sense, I use my upper body for
everything and add in the hand-cycling that
I do and the working out helps.
ATVriders.com:
I saw you have several machines in your workout
room, and one is a bicycle to work out your
legs, so exactly how does that work?
Josh
Frederick: It's
the FBS bike. It has electrodes that you hook
up to the muscles in your legs and through
electronic pulses it shocks the muscles in
your legs and makes your legs do the pedaling
like you would on a regular bike. Since I'm
not able to use the muscles in my legs, it
stimulates them and not only keeps my muscles
from going into total atrophy but it stimulates
the blood and is good for my bones, so I usually
do that for an hour three times a week.

To
help keep his leg muscles in shape,
Frederick uses a FBS bike that sends
electronic pulses through his leg muscles,
which simulates pedaling |
