Payette, Idaho - For the fifth round
of the WORCS Series, we made our way to Clay Peak Moto
Cross track in Payette, Idaho. This was our first race
of the year that was not held in the south western part
of the country where the weather is becoming extremely
hot, so it was suppose to be a nice change except Idaho
was experiencing record heat the weekend of the race with
temps in the upper 80’s and lower 90’s, which
was a little warm, but it could have been worse.
The track was definitely on the fastest tracks of the
season with many high speed straights, some technical
up and down hills. All of this paired with hot and dry
conditions, the visibility was near zero in some of
the sandy sections of the track, which meant for some
white knuckle racing as the dust was so bad in sections
you couldn’t even see your front bumper. What
they called the motocross section, was a few turns with
a step-up and a few tables, and then it was back out
onto the dusty desert section.

Brown
captured his first Pro Podium finish of the season,
and he currently leads the Open Pro Class Points. |
The Pro’s where off, and it was John Shafe grabbing
the Holeshot and earning the $200 Hiper Wheel Holeshot
Award, but it was not very long before Doug Eichner
made the pass and took over the first place position
followed by Josh Frederick with Shafe dropping back
to third place. Jeffery Bocook was running in the fourth
spot, and Brandon Brown rounded out the top five.
After the first lap, Eichner nice lead over Frederick,
but Frederick was also recovering from a sixth place
start. By the third lap, Frederick had closed the gap
to only 22 seconds between the pair. John Shafe was
still running in the third spot, but Brandon Brown had
worked his way into fourth.

Class |
Eichner must of known the Frederick was closing gap,
so he picked up some speed and extended his lead back
out to 40 seconds a few laps later. It was amazing to
watch how fast Eichner was attacking the track especially
after a nasty spill he took on Saturday in the Pro Production
class. Anyone who was watching the race could tell that
Frederick really want this win as he again began to
reel Eichner back in and closing the gap back down to
20 seconds, but his charge would hindered as he began
to experience issues with his Honda. It had seemed that
Frederick’s clutch was starting to fade, and with
just a few laps to go in the race.

after taking a spill in the Production Pro class
where he finished 9th. |
White Flag, and Eichner remained in the lead, but Frederick
remained within striking distance of Eichner, and he still
had a chance at the win if his clutch could withstand
one more lap of abuse. When they reappeared from the desert,
it was Eichner in the lead with Frederick behind him in
second as Frederick’s Honda came to a stop on the
track as his clutch completely failed a few hundred yards
from the finish line. Eichner rode on to the easy win
while Frederick jumped off his ATV and began to push it
to the finish line hopefully before being passed by Brandon
Brown now running in the third spot. Pro Am Rider, Bryan
Martin saw Frederick pushing his ATV and decided to help
out by pushing him with his ATV to the finish, which was
legal. With the push from Martin, Frederick was able to
hold onto his second place finish, and Martin deserves
the “Sportsmanship Award” for his actions.
Brandon Brown held onto his third place finish, which
provided him his first Pro Podium finish of the year.

Josh
Frederick earned two wins this weekend in the
Pro Production & Utility Class while he finished
in the runners up spot behind Eichner in the Pro
Class. |
The third consecutive win by Eichner catapults his points
lead out to 26 points over Frederick in second place with
Brandon Brown in a distance third, which will make the
next few races must wins for Josh Frederick to have any
chance at the WORCS Pro Championship. We look
forward to seeing everyone at the next round of the
WORCS series in Washougal, Washington. It will be held
the first weekend of June on June 3-4th.
