Helen Race Report

Rowley earned the championship on the merit of
three victories and three runner-up finishes this
season. “I never expected to come away with the
No. 1 plate in the Pro Stock Class,” said Rowley.
“I hit a big jump, blew a corner and some people
got past me, so I decided to play it safe from
there. I drove my own race and I ended up second.”

The big story was Nelson and the new Yamaha YXZ
1000R. The unique machine features a three-cylinder
engine and a manual five-speed gearbox. With little
seat time prior to the event, Nelson was ecstatic
with his third-place finish, especially after
starting on the second row. Nelson also took the
Sportsman class win in his custom Yamaha Wolverine.

“We finished third with what was essentially
a side by side right off the showroom floor,”
said Nelson. “We got third today in the Pro Stock
Class. We came here with a car right out of the
showroom with an IMG cage and a relocated CBR
radiator. We just turned some clickers on the
stock shocks. We didn’t have springs or anything-and
we had a pretty dang good race. To come from the
second row, climb all the way to third place and
finish on the podium in our first time out is
pretty cool.”
Gilbert Flores won his first 1000 Stock Class
race, handing Can-Am its first WORCS side-by-side
victory. “I’m not too sure anyone has ever won
a WORCS race in a Maverick, so I’m speechless,”
said Flores. “I got a pretty good start. I made
a pass and then I checked out. One guy hit me
pretty hard and it knocked out my four-wheel drive.
Luckily he tipped over so I got past him and won.”

Savannah Brooks claimed her first WORCS Powder
Puff win after battling with points leader, Danielle
Weatherly early in the race. Unfortunately, Weatherly
suffered mechanical issues, and Brooks charged
her way to the win.
Christy McGuffin claimed her best finish of the
season as well in the second spot followed by
Shelby Anderson in third.

“It was really exciting,” said Brooks. “I had
never won before. It feels a little unreal. I
like the course. It wasn’t too rough. Danielle
is one of my best friends, so I was glad to be
running with her, so it was nice to get this win.”
Jacob Shaw clinched the Ace Championship with
his sixth win of the season. Shaw also had one
second-place and won third-place finish on the
season. “It was a good one,” said Shaw. “We were
battling it for awhile. This pretty much wraps
up the championship.”
