#94 Dustin Nelson hangs onto a
Podium finish with a his Yamaha YFZ 450 |
The brutal woods section claimed many victims, putting
them out of contention and those that were fortunate
enough to keep going, suffered serious time losses.
Dustin Nelson, who feels most at home on the motocross
track, was able to use those skills to his advantage
and make up a lot of time that he lost in the woods.
“I got a decent start but it was a little
bit rough out there. I caught some trees and went
up over the bars one time, but I made up for it
on the MX part,” said Dustin, who was running
in 2nd place for most of the race. The rough track
caused Nelson to lose his front brakes in the 3rd
lap and then in the 4th lap, Nelson lost his rear
brakes as well. “I was running half the race
with no brakes, but I did the best I could,”
he said. When it was all said and done, the #94
factory Yamaha ended up taking 3rd place on the
podium. “I wanted to be first, but I guess
I’ll have to settle for third today,”
said Nelson, who is currently holding third in the
points race.

Dustin Nelson pressured #7 Robbie Mitchell
for several laps before Mitchell began to
pull away with a comfortable lead to the
final lap of the race

Mitchell may not have won the race, but
a 2nd Place finish was more than enough
to have mom break out the camera to capture
the moment while smiling ear to ear |
Robbie Mitchell, who held onto first place for
6 out of 8 laps, had the fastest lap time of all
the pros in lap 2 with an impressive time of 10:52.5.
“I loved it out there!” said Mitchell
in regards to the rugged terrain. “Trees,
rocks, mud; there’s nothing I like better,”
said Robbie despite his 3rd lap encounter with
a tree root that sent him flipping into the dense
undergrowth that lined the course. Mitchell’s
lead lasted until the last lap, when current champ
Josh Frederick, who had worked himself up from
8th place, closed the gap on Mitchell’s
40 second lead when Mitchell ran into a lapper
out in the woods and could not get around him
on the single lined course.
Frederick, who had been battling with Nelson
for most of the 6th and 7th laps, was able to
make his move during the last lap. “Dustin
bobbled a bit out there because of his brake issue
and I was able to pass him then,” said Frederick.
“Soon after that I caught up to Robbie when
he got hung up in traffic. Then when we were going
up the hill coming out of the woods, I had a little
bit better line than he did and I was able to
get past him, and it all worked out,” Josh
stated. Frederick’s excitement could not
be contained and he let out a cheer of delight
as he crossed the finish line in 1st with Mitchell
right behind him in 2nd.
