The 2013 BITD ATV & SxS / UTV Racing Opening Round was held in Parker, AZ with ATV & SxS racers leaving the starting line right at sunrise |
Colder than average seasonal temperatures greeted racers for the pre dawn start, with lows near the freezing point. The track for the 2013 BITD Parker 250 featured high speed whooped out and rocky sections, elevation changes, and many sand washes. Each lap consisted of around 80 miles with ATV classes running three laps and the Ironman ATV and SxS / UTV classes running two laps.
ATV & SxS / UTV racers staged at 6:45 AM, with the first motorcycle leaving the starting line at 7:15 about an hour before sunrise. The Quad Pro Class took off shortly after the Pro motorcycles before the sun crested the mountainside. The ATV’s left the starting line with a one minute interval of separation between each ATV & thirty second intervals in between the SxS / UTVs. The first challenge that racers faced in the morning was the sun. With the track running east for 27 miles, racers headed lead directly into the rising sun.
Rider of record of Scott Fisher started sixth and got off to a slow start aboard his Honda 700xx ATV, but Fisher gradually moved up through the pack. Although Fisher didn’t ever physically lead the race, the team rode consistent and was able to capitalize on the leader team of David Scott and James Woodford when they encountered clutch issues toward the end of lap 2. Fisher ended up taking the win by less than 10 seconds with adjusted time earning him this first ever Best in the Desert Pro Quad Class Win.
