The R-type geometry of the front
end means the kingpin axis is tucked into the wheel
as far as possible to all but eliminate wheel scrub |
The DS450’s front suspension is based around a narrow
frame design for maximum a-arm length, but takes it one step
further by inverting the front discs to move the lower balljoint
up into the front wheel. This is a totally new idea that has
never been seen before on a quad, with the calipers located
inside discs. The result is the longest lower a-arm of any
46" wide Sport 450 including the KFX450. The a-arms themselves
are made of forged aluminum, and have been designed using
Finite Element Analysis to place the meat of the material
where most of the stress is while keeping the overall weight
low. The KYB shocks are state of the art with rebound, compression,
and preload adjustability. KYB will be building the shocks
for the factory race team, and with the extensive experience
and resources of such a large OEM supplier they should progress
ATV shock design even further.

DS450 New R-Type Forged Upper & Low A-arms with
inverted dual-piston caliper, which is located on
the inside of the disc enables the placement
of the ball-joints deep inside the wheel to provide
a negative kingpin axis, which eliminate wheel scrub |
The rear suspension and swingarm are the lightest in the
class, reducing the unsprung weight even more while maintaining
the needed rigidity. The radical rear axle design uses a
larger shaft diameter to enable the axle to be hollow and
save weight. The axle’s overall width is narrowed
by the use of deep-offset aluminum rear hubs that also save
weight.

Jeremy
Schell |
Can-Am has been using their factory racers Jeremy Schell
and Josh Fredricks as development riders for the DS450 program,
and these two championship contenders have been putting
it through the paces. In addition to hundreds of laps on
the MX track, they have also done reliability testing by
jumping massive gaps, flat landing, and just all out trying
to break the quad to ensure the component integrity is up
to the task. Can-Am MX Team Manager Allen White, who has
a background that includes multiple desert racing successes,
organized a 24-hour test of the DS450 in the desert to assure
engine durability. Everyone involved with this program is
genuinely excited about the new machine, and they definitely
realize the impact it will have on the ATV racing community.
