2011 CanAm Commander 800R, 1000 X & XT SxS / UTV Ride Review

To help improve throttle control, Can-Am has also added its new Intelligent Throttle Control system (iTC), which is a throttle-by-wire system that works in conjunction with the 54mm Bosch throttle body. It is designed to produce smooth throttle delivery even if your foot is bouncing due to rough terrain. The iTC system can detect unwanted bouncing and it filters the input, which allows more throttle accuracy, especially at low speed.

“I was very impressed with the “Intelligent Throttle Control System”,” stated Harold Goodman. “In normal mode, it took out all the throttle bounce from my foot bouncing in the rough stuff and in performance mode, it provided better throttle response without getting too much throttle bounce.”

The suspension of the Commander line is impressive. The handling is great and works better than any of the competitor’s machines. The steering is responsive and the Carlisle Black Rock tires performed well under normal riding conditions, but for more aggressive riding, they can be a bit unpredictable and allow the UTV to fish tale rather uncontrollably.

The upgraded suspension paired with the Maxxis Big Horn 2.0 Tires on the Commander XT Package Models made a huge difference in the handling on the trails & we felt extremely confident in pushing the Commander to its limits

However, the next model we tested was the Commander 800R XT and the Maxxis Bighorn tires that come with that package worked amazingly well. With the addition of those tires, it made the Commander feel more controllable and very predictable in aggressive riding situations, which in turn, inspired confidence and comfort with the unit, and made us feel like there was nothing this machine could not handle.

NEXT G-1 Vista camouflage
The Can-Am Commander comes in a base model or you can upgrade to the Commander 800R XT package, which we highly recommend. The XT package offers a 4,000 pound winch, 26” Maxxis Bighorn 2.0 tires on 14” cast aluminum wheels. It also offers an analog/digital gauge, heavy duty front bumper, rugged bed rails, mud guards, and a leather steering wheel. This XT package comes in yellow or a new industry exclusive NEXT G-1 Vista camouflage.
