WORCS Round #8 - Links
Monticello, UT- It was time, once again for the ATV racers to pack up and head to another exciting destination on the WORCS schedule. This week it would Monticello, UT for the eighth round of the series, and with only one round of racing remaining on the schedule the race for the championship was heating up in many of the classes.

Unfortunately, racers were greeted to yet another mudfest with it raining on Thursday and Friday, which turned the track into a muddy mess, but by Saturday morning the rain briefly stopped, but the clouds remained. The damage was already done from the drenching rains, which forced the Youth races to the postponed because the track was impassible for the little machines. To add insult to injury, shortly after Noon, it began to drizzle and then came to the hail, which sent many running for shelter. It would be short lived, but it just added to the Chaos. The rain held out for the remainder of the day, but the skies thickened once again Saturday night and it poured through the night into early Sunday morning, which set the stage for a true Mud fest for the Pro Main.

Josh Frederick
The starting area was sloppy mess, and as the Pros headed to the line the skies looked as if it could rain again any moment. As for the track, the first corner strategy was more about getting through it without getting stuck than grabbing the Holeshot. The majority of the Pros lined up on the outside in hopes of avoiding some of the already churned up mud, but Robbie Mitchell picked the inside line and when the gate dropped, he pinned the throttle, spraying mud high into the air, and launched down the straight away to the $200 Hiper Wheel Holeshot Award with the rest of the class eating his roost.

By the end of the first lap, Josh Frederick would take over the lead closely followed by Doug Eichner and Robbie Mitchell, but Frederick’s lead would be short lived when he was forced to pit with a flat tire, which allowed Eichner to take over the lead. By the time Frederick replaced his tire, he dropped back to seventh place, but he wasn’t out of it yet as he dropped the hammer and began to charge his way back through the pack and recording the fastest lap-time of the race (10:46) in the process. Just as Frederick was gaining some momentum on Eichner in the lead, the unthinkable happened, another flat tire, which forced yet another extended pit stop. Frederick wasn’t the only rider experience problems as the mud began to take its toll on many of the ATVs, and Levi Marana chances a repeat Podium appearance ended when his quad overheated from the mud, which sidelined him for the remainder of the race.

Josh Frederick leads Doug Eichner
Meanwhile, Eichner remained in control of the lead and was well on his way to wrapping up the 2006 WORCS Championship with Robbie Mitchell continuing to run strong in second with Brandon Brown passing Shafe to take over the third spot. Incredibly, several laps later, Josh Frederick charged his way back up to fourth and was knocking on the grab bar of Brandon Brown. Before long, Frederick moved past Brown and into third, but he was still two minutes behind Eichner in the lead.

White flag lap, and the energy was building under the Duncan canopy as Frederick amazingly closed the gap to only 30 seconds on Eichner in the lead with Mitchell squeezed in between running in second. There simply wasn’t enough time for Frederick to close the gap, and Eichner secured his fifth win of the season the 2006 WORCS Pro ATV Championship with a 31 point lead over Josh Frederick. Robbie Mitchell held onto the second spot with Frederick rounding out the Podium..

Frederick, Eichner & Mitchell on the podium
Once again, Eichner was able to overcome adversity and claim yet another National Title to add to his impressive collection. At the beginning of the season, it appeared as if it was going to be Frederick’s year after Eichner experienced some early season gremlins, but the Duncan crew got it together, and ran an amazing second half of the season. CONGRATULATIONS DOUG!!!!!!

The final round of the season will be held at Pismo Beach in California for an exciting conclusion of the series with the bikes and ATVs racing side by side on the beach with the end of year banquet following the racing, so regardless if you are racing, you don’t won’t be miss the season finale in sunny California.
