#143 Dirkie Baard was seriously injured
on Sunday during practice when he attempted
the 120ft triple & came up short, which
sent him to the hospital with multiple injuries,
so Baard will be heading back home to South
Africa to recover, but hopefully he will
be back in time for the next round of the
WORCS Series in Washingon |
After watching Dustin Nelson take the huge triple
jump during Saturday’s motos, things got interesting
on Sunday and would end badly for Dirkie Baard during
practice. “A bunch of guys decided to start
trying that jump. There was a train of guys going
over it, and Dirkie was behind one Pro-am guy who
came out to practice with us and the Pro-am rider
ended up coming up kind of short and barely made
it, and Dirkie ended up coming up really short and
went down hard,” explained Dustin Nelson.
Baard suffered multiple injuries including a
fractured hip, shoulder blade, wrist and a punctured
lung. Baard was attending the race by himself,
but many of his fellow racers pulled together
to make sure all of Baard’s belongings and
quad were packed up and secured while Wayne Matlock,
who has been hosting Baard during his stay in
the states, came to collect his things for him.
Baard was scheduled to fly home to South Africa
just two days after the race to visit his family
for a couple of weeks, before the next round of
the WORCS race, but Baard was still hospitalized
on Tuesday. Even though Baard’s incident
was unfortunate and left a somber tone for the
day, Sunday’s round six racing would continue.

Maxxis'
Beau Baron grabbed the Moto One Holeshot,
but Yamaha's #94 Dustin Nelson was all over
Baron in first turn |

#94 Dustin Nelson made quick work of passing
Baron to take over the lead by the 2nd turn
& Nelson would go on to win both Motos
on Sunday for his 6th Straight Overall Win
of the season, which sets the stage for
Nelson to wrap-up the Pro Championship at
SpeedWorld's Round 7 with another win |
Yamaha’s Dustin Nelson, who was determined
not to let Beau Baron take another moto win from
him, shot off the line and was side by side with
Baron, but Nelson was able to edge him out in the
first turn to grab the holeshot. “I got out
front, but this time it was harder to shake Beau
because everyone was starting to do the triple jump
and I didn’t really have that as an advantage
anymore, but I was able to hold him off and take
the moto one win,” said Nelson.
Moto two was another drag race off the start between
baron and Nelson, with Baron getting the holeshot,
and Nelson right on his heels. Nelson was able to
get by Baron in the second turn and pulled away.
Nelson pulled a ten second gap before crossing the
finish line, taking the moto two win and the round
six overall pro win. “There’s two rounds
left in the series and I have to get one more overall
win and I can wrap up the championship a round early,”
said Nelson.
