CMRC Canadian Cup ATV Motocross racing

CMRC ATV Motocross Racing - Pro ATV MX 2010 Overview Report
Greg Gee, Jasmin Plante, Richard Pelchat - A Three-way Battle for the Championship!

Greg Gee - Honda TRX450R ATV
Baldwin/Spastic/Fox/Honda's Greg Gee is the current Pro ATV MX points leader in the 2010 Canada Cup. If he can hang on for the rest of the season it will set a new page in the CMRC History Books!
Canada - The Canadian Motosport Racing Corporation Series is Canada’s Premier sanctioning body for ATV and Motorcycle racing. The series is committed to the development and growth of the competitive off-road racing community for ATVs and motorcycles. They “Are responsible for setting, implementing, maintaining, and developing standards for rules of competition, officiating, organization and promotion of events. CMRC will seek to cultivate promotional opportunities, which are intended to be the benefit of the overall membership.”

The CMRC ATV Championship Series has many different divisions of racing for racers to compete in along with many different tracks to race at. The main facilities include Burnt River in Burnt River Ontario, Rock Mountain House in Alberta, Westlock in Alberta, Motopark in Chatsworth, Taber in Alberta, Ste-Veronique, OCD Parry Sound, Walton Raceway, X Town in Quebec, Eagles Nest, and Grand Bend.

Walton MX - ATV MX Racing Track
The track at Walton MX in Ontario, CA is quite wide open from the holeshot (far left) as you go down past the lake, and out towards the corn fields at the start of the race - you then go over several jumps before coming around towards the announcer tower

There are also a few different series within the CMRC as well. There are the ATV Triple Crowns, ATV Provincials, Quad Cross, and the ATV Canada Cup.

Soils and land elevation are much like you would find anywhere else in the United States as there is a mix of loam, sand, hardpack and clay. Much of Southern Canada is flat with few elevation changes so many tracks will be man made into any configuration desired. Such a track would be the Lee Family Farm in Walton, Ontario which is set up much like the Unadilla Valley Sports Center in that it is natural terrain with downhill and uphill jumps with wide, timberlined track paths.

The soil at Walton MX is a dark, hardpack which actually develops a blue-groove after a few motos have been run creating a somewhat tacky yet slippery surface if any water is introduced to the surface. Rounds 4 and 5 were held at this which also holds the Trans-Can Motorcycle National event as well.

The ATV MX racers in this series are some of the best in the world as well and hold nothing back on the track. Throughout most of the history of ATV racing in Canada, a Canadian ATV Championship was ran to crown the best riders in the country. The championship saw various sanctioning bodies, but was kept running thanks mostly to the die-hard ATV racers.

The Famous Desormeaux brothers; ''Pierre and Jean'' were the big stars of the 1980's and 1990's racing on Suzuki LT250R ATVs. Then Sylvain Lafortune came with his high jumping skills and new racing style in the mid 1990's to earn many Championships on a Honda TRX250R. Sylvain Arsenault ''Arsene'' was also a tough competitor throughout those year always putting pressure on the top-runners.

Richard Pelchat - 2005 Yamaha YFZ450R ATV
#46 Richard Pelchat during his reign of the 2005 Canadian Championship aboard his Factory Yamaha ATV
At the end of the 90's and early 2000's it was a young Jasmin Plante that was the top gun winning the Championship and being unbeatable.

From 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006 the series saw Richard Pelchat taking over the crown as ATV racing was exploding in Canada taking 5 championship in a row. Top competitors were Jasmin Plante, James Bank and Richard Pelchat. 2004 was the ultimate face off as both Honda and Yamaha provided factory rides to Richard and Jasmin Plante, after his 2002, 2003 AMA season. With the Manufacturer's honor at stake, everything got more professional and events began to be setup more correctly. Jasmin, unfortunately got injured badly mid season and Richard on his Yamaha got the top crown for that season.
