Lawson's Mechanic Johnny Cross prepares
the muddy starting gate for Moto 2 because
the start will be critical for a top finish
in the mud |
A couple of hours before racers were getting ready
to line up for moto 2, the skies opened up and rain
began to fall. “The heat and humidity really
got to me in the first moto, so I was praying for
rain,” said Can-Am’s Cody Miller. “I
usually do pretty well in the rain and mud so I
was happy to see it rain.” The rain also caught
some racers, like Dustin Wimmer by surprise. “I
was resting in the trailer and then all of a sudden
I heard it coming down out there,” Dustin
said.
Rain was still falling as racers took to the soggy
starting line. As the gate dropped, it was Joe Bryd
who took the holeshot, but Natalie quickly took
over the lead. “I knew it would be important
to get out front so that the mud wouldn’t
be a factor in visibility,” said John who
was followed by Dustin Wimmer, Joe Byrd, Josh Creamer,
Keith Little and Jeremy Lawson at the end of lap
one. “The rain definitely changed things,”
said Honda’s Joe Byrd. “I got a good
start, but it was real slick and I just couldn’t
make the tires stick,” Joe said disappointedly.

Honda
/ DASA Racing's Joe Byrd grabbed the ATVriders.com
Holeshot Award, but his lead would be short
lived as Byrd struggled for traction, which
allowed Can-Am;s John Natalie Jr to take
control of the lead |

Natalie, Wimmer, Byrd, and Creamer all ran in
their same positions for the entire race with
Natalie gaining a few seconds on his lead. “The
rain really changed our strategy,” said
Dustin Wimmer. “I just rode a smart race
and stayed consistent. Since I have the points
lead, I didn’t want to take any unnecessary
chances and jeopardize that,” said Wimmer.
As the top four held their positions, Jeremy
Lawson, who threw his goggles early into the race
had challenged Keith Little for 5th and won. “It
was so wet out there. The mud made it hard to
see and even harder to pass,” said Lawson,
who settle for a 5th place finish in moto two.
Can-Am/Warnert Racing’s Cody Miller held
true to his word and performed very well in moto
two. Miller came off the line in 11th place and
began picking off riders. “I went through
a lot of tear offs!” said Miller lightheartedly.
Cody made a very impressive showing as he passed
Upperman, Dunkelberger, Pelchat, Russell Shumaker
and finally Keith Little to finish in 6th place.
