Jarrod McClure's WORCS &
Heartland Challenge ATV Race Report
WORCS Series - Round
6 Straddleline ORV & 2009 GBC Heartland Challenge
Kaska, PA (9/16/2009) - This year
as the GNCC racing series went into the summer break
a lot of racers were anxious to have a two-month
break. I new I had the whole month of July off so
I relaxed a little and did some kayaking up north,
but before I knew it August came around. In August
I had two big races to compete in. Round 6 of the
WORCS racing series in Olympia, WA, and also the
weekend after was the Heartland Challenge 10 hour
race!
I flew into Seattle, on a Wednesday, and had
some time to work on my Honda 450R and get it
prepped for the weekend. I mounted up a set of
the new GBC “Ground Buster” tires,
also a new Motoworks exhaust, and had my Exit
suspension serviced and ready to go! I headed
over to the track on Friday, and Saturday, and
I was able to get some practice time in. Chris
Borich came out for this round (I finally talked
him into doing one), and I put in a few good laps
with him, and I was feeling ready to go.
Sunday came and it was time for the pro main.
The start was on a gate as always, and I came
off around mid-pack. I was pretty comfortable
there and began to pick off riders. The Straddleline
track consisted of a very tame motocross track
linked to an awesome woods section. This is definitely
my favorite track so far in this series!
I began to pick off riders, and before I knew
it I was making a pass on Josh Frederick, and
fell into line in fifth place right behind Beau
Baron. It was now the third lap and I was putting
some pressure on Beau in the woods. My charge
came to a halt when a rock jammed up my front
wheel bending my brake rotor and leaving me with
no front brakes. After fighting for about two
minutes with my front wheel I got rolling again,
but I had lost all of the position I had gained.
I still had some time so I put my head down and
began charging hard (with no front brakes)! I
worked my way back into the top ten, then made
the pass on Doug Eichner, and Josh Frederick into
the top five.
As I came around on the last lap I was in fourth
and just before the finish I could see Beau in
front of me, but I couldn’t catch him in
time. He beat me by five seconds! I settled for
fourth, which I was happy with after a tough day!
