Jarrod McClure's WORCS Heartland
Challenge Pro ATV Race Report
::Continued::
I flew out of Washington the next day. When I
arrived back home in Pennsylvania I knew I had
only a few days to get my Yamaha ready for the
Heartland Challenge 10 Hour race in Iowa.
The Heartland race allowed up to three riders
on a team, but I decided to run with just Jeff
Pickens. We did it last year with a two-man team
so we figured we would stick to that strategy.
With my XCBOB.com YFZ prepped by Bowers Motorcycle
Supplies, I was ready to go. We began the 18hour
drive to Iowa.
We arrived at the track early Friday morning.
This gave Jeff and I plenty of time to double
check the bikes, walk the track, and talk a little
strategy. Our bikes were almost identical, so
we planned on trying to ride each others bike
a little while instead of switching every time
to gain some time on the competition. The start
would be Lemans style, where you had to run to
your quad. I left Jeff start this year and he
pulled a monster holeshot! He rode with the lead
for about a lap then was passed by Brain Wolfe.
After a little over an hour he pulled in and I
jumped right on his bike to do my first hour.
Without switching quads paid off and it gained
us a minute and a half lead!
I pulled in and now it was Jeff’s turn
again on his quad, after his run we would switch
to my quad. He took he first lap still in the
lead. Then we waited it seemed like forvever,
then he came by in third on my quad! Here a lapper
forced him into a tree breaking his spindle. We
stayed on the lead lap but were now down eight
minutes, and also down to one quad with seven
hours to go.
We just rode smart and slowly made back time
as some of he other teams had issues. Our run
was flawless for the last seven hours. The last
two hours got the best. It was dark, and the HMF
team had some issues giving us second place. I
was last to go in the dark and began charging
hard. I was going for the win or else breaking
something trying. Every lap I was gaining almost
a minute, but I came around and saw the checkered…no
white flag? I was a little mad I was expecting
at least another lap.
Jeff and I ended up second behind Duane Johnson,
Kyle Martin, and Michael Burrows. It was a really
fun race, and we rode our best. It was a lot better
then last year being in August instead of November.
We packed up and headed back to Pennsylvania.
I had an exciting summer break and a lot of fun.
I am going to hit a few District 6 races fore
Unadilla, so maybe I will see you there if not
I’ll see ya in NY!
