Yamaha Grizzly 550 FI EPS IRS Sport Utility
ATV |
Utility quads are always one of the best sellers
on the market, and makes up approximately 70%
of Yamaha’s ATV sales. In response to that
demand, Yamaha has the strongest line up of utility
machines in the industry, but it has always been
missing one thing…a 500 class machine. New
for 2009 is the Yamaha Grizzly 550 FI. The ATV
has been newly designed and is based on its big
brother, the Grizzly 700.
The new Grizzly 550 FI has borrowed several
features from the 700, including its electronic
power steering. The power steering makes the
steering feel light and nimble and provides
improved feel when an obstacle is encountered
on the trail, especially when the differential
lock is engaged.

New 558cc
Fuel Injected Engine, which is based
on the Grizzly 700 with the bore reduced
to 92mm and matched to a new cylinder
head with matched valve & combustion
chamber size

The new 558cc fuel injected engine is based on
the Grizzly 700’s motor. The motor features
an aluminum-forged piston, a ceramic composite
plated cylinder, and the bore on the 550 has been
reduced to 92mm. The motor set up also includes
roller rocker arms to reduce friction. One feature
of the 550 that differs from its 700 counterpart
is the all-new cylinder head with a matched valve
and combustion chamber and in combination with
the new intake and exhaust port, improves throttle
response and bottom end power. The Grizzly
550 FI also comes with a stainless steel exhaust
that includes a spherical surface joint that helps
reduce vibration. The Grizzly 550 has also borrowed
the 700’s Ultramatic transmission. The one-way
sprag clutch allows for natural feeling engine
braking and the centrifugal clutch allows for
constant belt tension so no slips occur. Like
the 700 it has a direct drive shaft design to
increase durability while reducing vibration and
power loss.
