So what does an outdoors enthusiast, like Scott McFarland, who has the ultimate playground as his backyard do when he wants to get away from it all? Desert racing of course! In his spare time, McFarland races off-road trucks in the Best in the Desert (BITD) series. “We race in class eight. We’ve been racing for about three years and we have done pretty well. In 2010 we got second in points and last year we took a couple of wins. It has been fun and that’s what matters most,” said McFarland, whose spare time is quite limited, especially in the spring.
“Spring time is when we are busiest. As soon as ski season in Aspen is over, everyone heads down here,” said McFarland. Summer also sees plenty of activity in the area, but it soon dies down in the fall. However, that is when some of the best riding and sight-seeing opportunities are available, if you are looking to avoid the crowds and find awesome deals on lodging and recreation in the area.
