2009 Dunefest
- Winchester Bay, Oregon
::Continued::
Another event that always draws a crowd is the
charity auction in which area dealerships and
event sponsors donate products to be auctioned
off with all the proceeds going to charity. This
year a professional auctioneer pumped up the crowd
and event sponsors really came through by donating
some big items like a full exhaust system from
LRD Performance and a complete front end suspension
package from iShock. Most of the items sell for
less than their retail price so it’s a great
opportunity to get a deal on some parts while
supporting a good cause.

Racing Action
Whether you prefer to race the clock or a field
of other competitors, DuneFest is sure to have
a format that’s right for you. Barrel racing
kicks things of Friday morning with classes for
every age and skill level. This is a popular event
for the younger crowd but big bikes and UTV’s
are welcome to take a run around the barrels as
well. To add a little fun to the race, participants
wearing a cowboy hat or other form of western
wear could shave three seconds off their final
time. The cowboy hats had to be worn over a helmet
of course.

ATV
racers prepare for some practice laps after
Barrel Racing is done. Sand MX classes rnge
from Youth to Pro |
As the last few barrel racers made their way
around the course, a sea of eager motocrossers
began to gather outside of the starting gate to
put down some practice laps before the MX racing
began. The sand motocross races are quickly growing
in popularity and with classes ranging from Youth
to Pro everyone is welcome to join. There is even
an iron man challenge for those who find the 20
minute moto on a chopped up sandy course a little
too easy. One of the most entertaining races of
the day was the UTV motocross as nearly every
competitor either blew a tire or pulled off due
to mechanical issues. One brave soul pitted a
Honda Pilot against the bigger UTV’s and
actually held his own for the majority of the
race.

UTV
motocross would end up being one of the
most entertaining races of the day |
Without a doubt the most popular event of the
fest is the drag racing. At any given time throughout
the course of the event you will find hundreds
of people lining the sides of the drag strip checking
out some of the most insane quads from around
the country. The drag strip opens Thursday morning
of the event for a test and tune session to allow
the serious racers an opportunity to fine-tune
their machines. Once the racing starts there are
multiple classes that contestants can enter including
the Thumper Wars, the Banshee Bash and King of
the Dunes. There are also classes for UTV’s,
sand cars and I even saw a Honda Trail 70 make
a run down the drag strip toting a cooler along
behind him.
