How to
Get Started ATV Racing
::Continued::
Endurance
ATV Racing Information |
If traveling over hundreds of miles in the middle
of now where sounds like too much to handle, but
you would enjoy an endurance race within a closed
course, there are several options available. The
most popular and longest running is the 12
Hours of Pont de Vaux in France, which is 2-3
rider team that racers in three several hour long
races over 2 days, and the track is similar to a
flat track event, but becomes extremely rough over
the course of the race. Another similar event held
closer to home is the Canadian 12
hours Endurance of La Tuque, which is very similar
to the Ponte de Vaux in track layout, but there
is more jumps and deep sand at the La Tuque.
|
|
Both
the Pont de Vaux & La Tuque races have
a huge community involvement with the ATV
racing teams filling the town streets before
the race, and several teams for the US travel
to Canada and France each year to participate
in these events. They both start Le Mans
Style with ATV racers starting off their
ATV and sprinting 20-30 feet to their ATV
at the start of the event

In 2008, the first ever Heartland
Challenge was held in Carlisle, Iowa, which
featured a 10 Hour Sport & Utility ATV race
along with a 3 Hour youth ATV race, and unlike
the foreign endurance ATV races, it is closer
to a mix of XC and MX racing in one event with
teams and sole racers that can race on multiple
ATVs throughout the event. Also, the WORCS Series
has hosted the PIAA/
WORCS 8 Hour Endurance race this past two
years in Arizona, which is very similar to the
Heartland Challenge.
|
|
The
Heartland Challenge starts LeMans Style
as well, but there are no breaks in the
action for the entire event, and the racing
action doesn't finish till after dark, so
lights are required many teams opt for aftermarket
lights from PIAA & Trail Tech for maximum
visibility after dark. The next GBC Heartland
Challeng will be held August 21-22, 2009

ATV
Drag Racing / Hill Climb ATV Racing |
There are those that are addicted to speed, and
ATVs are a great way to get into high speed racing
without spending a small fortune. One form of racing,
is ATV Drag Racing, with racing series around the
country, which race on everything from pavement,
dirt, and sand. Also, there are even sand drags
out in the sand dunes with ATV racers racing against
the clock up the sand dunes and each other.
Also, there are some ATV horsepower hungry racers
that want to race up the side of hill in the National
hill climb competitions with stretched out ATVs
with impressive horsepower numbers to go along
with them.
|
|
For
years the 2 Stroke Yamaha Banshee has been
king of the drag strip, but recently the
4 stroke monsters are beginning to gain
steam, and there are some wild ATV alterations
done for maximum speed |
The Pikes
Peak Hill Climb is one of the most famous
ATV racing hill climbs in the US, and it
is held just once a year in Colorado, but
this is only one type of hill climb ATV
racing |
For those ATV riders that prefer utility ATVs and
don’t mind getting dirty, ATV pulling &
mud racing might be right up your alley. ATV pulls
are held at various ATV riding events around the
country, and the Quadfest
in PA, attracts a huge crow of competitors each
year.
If you like playing in the mud and live in the
south, you might want to consider ATV Mud Racing,
which attracts the largest ATV crowds you will
ever find at any ATV racing competition with some
events like the High
Lifter Mud Nationals attracting well over
10,000 ATV riders with several hundred racing
competitors
|
|
Before
you hit the mud pit, you better have your
ATV as water proof as possible, and unless
you buy the new Arctic
Cat Mud Pro 700, plan on spending around
$5,000 to get your ATV ready to hit the
mud. You will need a snorkel for the airbox,
CVT Intake & Exhaust. Also, a lift kit
and larger wheels & tires. Many also
relocated the radiator to the top of the
fenders and install a winch because you
will eventually get stuck no matter how
good you are in the mud |
