That sounds almost exactly like my plans for my 79 posted a few pages earlier. Although I'll probably keep the Dana44 front end, it's fine for my needs.

I'm thinking the 203/205 doubler because it's easy to get a cable shifter for that combo. I've got a body lift on mine, so my transfer case shifter is really low, and the shift boot doesn't have enough flex to allow the the complete throw as it sits, so I had to take it off and now I have a huge gaping hole in the floor.

I'd rather drive. Diesel prices don't really mean much to me. I'll just run my mustang if they get outrageous.

Yah I have the spartan 310 on it. It's pretty nasty for a 7200 lb truck.

BFT is prototyping a vegistroke system up for the 6.4's right now. It is on one truck to date, and they are tweaking it as they go. I think they're aiming to have it released before the end of the year. Not sure if that's something that would interest you or not. I run one on my 6.0. Love it.

I thought about going biodiesel but it's honestly more of a headache around here than what it's worth to collect the oil, refine it, add additives, and run it. It's more of the collection of the oil. I looked into it and most food chains now sign releases of their oil to disposal agencies, also, they can sell it but in the end I'd be taxed on it. If you could find a local business willing to sell it cheap or give it to you, it's all worth it. If not, it's a major pita.

GVWR 26k lbs is the limit. Your over 26 with everything you need cdl. THat means anything that weighs that much you need the cdl for. Most motorhomes, campers, rv, trucks, etc arent 26k lbs purposely otherwise you need a cdl to drive one. If it has hydraulic over air brakes you dont need a cdl, if it has air brakes you do.

So if truck and trailer and whatever your hauling is over that you cant tow it legally without a class B.

But lets see, GVWR to the F250/350 is about 9000, the trailer is probably 3000-4000 and the other truck is probably 6000-8000. Well within the limits.

I used to drive a big arse flatbed tow truck, its max gvwr was 25.5 purposely to keep it under cdl and it had hydraulic brakes over air.

I tow a trailer all the time with a mini excavator, I just got pulled over the other day trailer was listed @20k lbs. needed a cdl b atleast a truck and trailer with equipment needs cdl b to haul it but most cops don't enforce it........ except the tunnel cops here in baltimore, as for the toter's they are listed as not for hire rec vehicals they only require a reg. drivers lic

Thats why if your smart you reg trailer as homemade and remove that stupid plate and register it whatever weight you think is right.

least thats how MANY of us do it. My trailer is listed at 1500lbs, and I know it can carry 2-3x that. But fees are less if its 1500 and its just a quad trailer.

It's not biodiesel, it's just veggie oil filtered, run it straight. No chemicals to mix up. Bio you can run in the factory tank, with WVO you need the kit to run it.

Think of it this way:

Bio you make the fuel to run in the truck
WVO you make the truck to run the fuel. Make sense?

No. My buddy tows commercially for NYS, he's running an F350 extended cab long bed dually with a 53' tri-axle wedge trailer, and runs his normal drivers liscence. He can tow up to 26k.

A lot of guys actually register their trucks as 10,001 lbs to avoid emissions testing too, without a CDL.

Yep, my mom had a 2009 Ford Edge limited AWD, and I always thought it had nice chrome wheels. One day I was adding air to the tire and just happened to the the wheel just right and got a plastic sound... sure enough. How cheap!

Thats what I keep saying, how many times do I gotta say it folks-if your under 26k total gross combined weight rating with truck, trailer and whatevers on trailer and your truck doesnt have air brakes your fine.

I mean really, if that wasnt the case every single light tow truck truck driver would need a cdl. 26k GCWR is the legal limit federally regulated by DOT, state might be different but I doubt it.

Your average F350 weighs 6500-9000lbs or so depending on truck configuration, most trailers (for the sake of it let say a car trailer) is 2000-3000lbs at the highest, the other vehicle being towed is another truck, 6000-8000lbs. Your still under the 26k limit.

Now, legally speaking ford, chevy, dodge, etc all set a GVWR for the truck-this is the max your truck should weigh with all gear, fuel, and passengers. IE if your truck weighs 6000lbs curb weight, has a GVWR of 9000lbs then you can safely carry 3000lbs of stuff (including fuel and passengers)-this is often referred to as payload. HOWEVER just because the sticker on the truck says say 8500lbs GVWR-its often very under rated due to car makers wanting to make sure people arent idiots and overload.. Ive carried far more than what the sticker says in multiple trucks fine.

Now, when towing a trailer with something on it you want to refer to the GCWR=gross combined weight rating, or the weight of everything including the GVWR and the trailer and whatever its carrying. This is often much more than the GVWR.

If you dont understand what GVWR and GCWR is please stop posting nonsense. B/c if we followed what many have said so far I woulda needed a cdl to tow professionally and I did not

Well what about me, i am driving my buddy's F-450 which is a truck used at a commercial buisness this weekend with a flat bed gooseneck with two skidsteers... I'm in missouri.. do i need a CDL?

Check the gvrw of the trailer. If it is 10001 lbs+ then you need a cdl. I am guessing it is if it is a gooseneck trailer. The f450 you can drive but highly doubt it with that trailer. Especially hauling 2 skidsteers.

All depends on the weight. Also if s the truck says not for hire on the side it does help-as that means your not truly commercial but doing it personally. Mostly applies to towing (as in tow trucks) tho.

If your under 26k your good to go, otherwise you could get a ticket-but they will probably leave you alone or if you do get nabbed a warning.

Lets do some math, a typical skid steer is about what 5000-7000lbs, so you got 10,000-14,000lbs, the trailer which might be 3500lbs or less and then the truck which is probably about 9000lbs. So your just skirting under it probably or damn near close to it.

How far you gotta go? 20-50 miles I wouldnt worry but more than that and alot of hwy travel you might run into some troopers. Could not use the interstate and stay on county or state hwys where the cops generally dont hang out.

If the trailer is over 10k lbs then your screwed. 10,001 means class A CDL. But get this, depending on where you live if the trailer is rated less than 10,000lbs then it doesnt usually count for the total weight.

I were you, call up your local dot # and see what they say or tow 1 skid steer at a time if you dont want to chance it.

this might help http://www.turfjim.com/DOT_INFO.html

its not the gvrw of the trailer, if the gvrw of the truck is 10,001+ lbs you need commercial plates still not requiring a cdl.

i would venture to say that with that truck and loaded trailer you would be toeing the line on the 26k gcrw cdl requirement.

Its soooo stupidly confusing isnt it? Stupid bureaucrats..

your right it is confusing i just went though school to get my cdl...

thats why the feds are going to make it easy this year with new laws  by the end of this year to even tow your boat ot the lake you will need a cdl (if they pass the law) any truck and trailer over 10,000 will need a cdl.. right now its any truck/trailer over 26,000lbs or trailer over 10,000lbs.. but soon everyone that tows anything will need a cdl.. bc they fed is setting the laws for every state.. just another way for them to get more $$$ so most of us have ave trails, boats, rv's your going to need a B class cdl at least... it really is bs but in a way i like it cuz some people should not be towing a trailer they are just to stupid... you want a laugh go to a boat ranp and watch people try to back a boat into a boat ramp :p iv seen people give up or try all kinds of crazy stuff lol but as the law is now i dont care if your truck only is 2lbs if your trailer is 10,001lbs u still need a cdl.. im not trying to fight with you guys im just trying to inform you.

Found it, right from the dots website

http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/registration-licensing/cdl/cdl.htm

Class B -- Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds GVWR.

So the way its worded there, whatever your towing, if its over 10klbs you need a class B. The only exemption I know for this is for tow truck drivers, snow plow drivers, emergency workers, etc in non cdl trucks (least here).

Well the most outrageous setup i've ever pulled was my uncles 40ft trailer for car shows... I did get pulled over because apparently i was too long for the amount of axles i had?? I thought it was B.S.... My uncle pulled in behind me and told the guy i didn't know it was illegal and that it was his truck... so i got out of it. I think the whole setup was like 45 ft or something... I have no clue. But since it wasn't commercial the weight laws didn't apply. I have hauled some rediculous stuff before. It stretched that Duramax to the max on some of these hills in missouri. I'll see if i can find a picture of our setup somewhere..

Sounds like the DOT or Trooper was just messing with you or didnt have a real reason to pull you over.

Ive hauled everything imaginable, including driving an 18 wheeler among other things. Think my favorite was the Chevy Kodiak I drove when towing. 24ft flatbed, hydraulic over air brakes, huge CAT diesel and 6 speed. Had that sucker kitted out with strobes, lights, you name it. When I rolled up to an accident the cops loved me cause I lit it up like daylight.

I miss that truck.

Actually what it's saying if you are over 10000lbs you need class A.

class b you can drive any SINGLE vehicle... think box van or something of the sort that is over 26001 and your trailer if you have one cant have a weight of over 10k ....obviously with a class a your trailer can be over that.... at least i think thats right...

painted the junkyard warrior with krylon ultra flat spray paint out in the driveway, I needed to put two new fenders, a door, and grill on that were all mismatched colors, so i decided to paint it. I sanded it and primed it first, and removed all the molding. I think it turned out good for around 50$ in paint!

Fnt have any pics of mine. But its a Dakota r/t regular cab. Has a Martin saine tranny, 408 is being built, gonna put a turbo on it. Also going to put air on the rear to help with my small trailer and 2 atvs. Should be a fun truck when complete. I haven't decided on what 4x4 I'm gonna buy. It will be gas and stick, I hate diesels.

The actual headlight isn't on in that pic. The halo is wrapped around the low beam projector headlight(that orb looking thing in the center of the halo). It stays on when you have your low beams on and then turns off when you switch to the highs.

I agree but where I live there's no use for a 4x4 here unless you want it for looks

frame was sanded down and coated with POR15 years and years ago. All rust (cab corners, body mounts...etc) were fixed by the previous owner - about $1300 of work - all metal and had receipts from body shop. I replaced the fenders and have gone over everything else with a good undercoating and POR15 - its not going to rust anymore. :)

Took me almost a year to find a truck fro this era that was in good condition (solid frame) for a decent price - had to drive 5 hours away to get it though...old dairy farmer owned it and took damn good care of it.

Not trying to be rude, but that has a purpose besides looks? I live in the country though. Generally the 4x4s actually get used here. Diesels usually don't make it far from the gravel. Nice looking rides.

For me besides looks the ride quality is the best I've had. I'd definitely have a 4x4 if I had the room and use for one

if your truck is a grocery go getter or an average daily driver than no, its not necessary. if its anything more than that its completely worth it in my eyes.

I cant stand not to have 4wd. Had an old F150 2wd and all that helped was weight in the bed and some nice all terrains in the back. Switched to a 4wd toyota and it WALKS places the F150 struggled.

Cant tell you how many times Ive used 4wd over the years, lost track.

I agree with everyone they are nice when you can use them but there is absolutely nowhere in my area or that I go that a 4wd will be needed. My lifestyle and career I do not need one but thats just me.

Yea Josh did it, but the Front driver and pass. windows are tinted 20% everything behind the driver is just factory GM tint ( which is 20%). I have never been bothered by the 5-0, but in Illinois you are allowed 35% so I'm not too far off.

Stickman400
03-14-2012, 09:42 AM
Looks good. It's 35% in MO too, but if an Iowa cop stops me and tells me to take it off I'm gunna tell him to shove it because I live in MO, lol

Yea I don't know how the cops in Keokuk were getting away with giving tint tickets to people that have their vehicles registered in IL/MO. One of my friends from IL got pulled over in Keo for tint and the cop was like I'm just gonna give you a warning because I don't really know the Illinois laws on tint.

Missouri laws are 35% on the front windows and 5% on the rear windows. No windshield tint, just a sunstrip.

Stickman400
03-15-2012, 01:12 AM
Well where I read it from it's 35% on drivers windows and no law on anything behind that. And then the top 6" (or above the AS 1 line) of the front windshield can have a non- reflective tint strip. See here: http://www.tintcenter.com/laws/MO/

I finally got a new truck, and it's a major upgrade from the little 'ol danger ranger I had. Black 2012 Ram Power Wagon, bought it brand new with 40 miles on it. Idk if you guys have ever seen one or know what they are but these things are the ultimate full size off road truck from the factory. From the factory it comes with a 12,000lb. Warn winch mounted between the frame rails, solid axles front and rear, electronic locking diffs front and rear, electronic disconnecting sway bars, 4.56 gears, Bilstein shocks, 33" BFG All Terrains and lots of other little odds and ends like larger 1 ton rear axles shafts, sits 2" higher than the normal 2500s, tow pkg. full skid plates underneath and more.

I'm in love with this thing, it'll go anywhere and do anything just as it sits now, so I don't really have to lift it if I don't want to, but I still think I'll put a small lift and 35s on it when the BFGs wear out. And then within the first week I bought it I bought some nice custom fit neoprene seat covers to keep the interior nice aswell as those custom fit laser scanned Weathertech floor liners to keep the carpet half way decent and then took it to the local Line X and had them spray in their preimium bedliner before I even loaded anything in the bed.

The only thing I don't like about it is the fuel milage, I get about 11 or 12 in town and 14 or 15 on the highway, which isn't bad compared to other late '90s early 2000s with the 327s or 305s in them, or trucks that have a similar gearing and tire setup as these things do. Anyway here's a few pics I have of it, let me know what you guys think!

I guess it's just an added bonus that it matches my 400s color scheme perfectly.

Thanks for the coments guys! Im a Chevy guy through and through but I dont mind Dodge either, especially the look of the new body style. I wil never buy a Ford again though, unles its really cheap. When I started looking for a new truck I was really wanting to get a 12 Chevy 2500HD crew cab short bed, but I couldnt find one with the options I wanted within 500 miles of me so I started looking around for a 12 Dodge 2500 with similar options, but when I was building one of those on Dodges site I noticed the power wagon option and remembered that they brought them back a few years ago. Then after I saw what all it came with I knew that was what I wanted. I was gunna do the same kind of upgrades to the Chevy eventually (SAS, lockers, winch, 4.10s or 4.56s once I put 35s on it, etc.) so this just kinda made it easier on me and my wallet in the long run.

Nice looking truck. Too bad it doesn't have a Cummins in it.

Yea, you can only get power wagons with the 5.7. I think it has something to do with the electronic disconnecting swaybar being right were the intercooler and piping would be. I dont pull a trailer very often so I dont really need a diesel anyway. Itd be cool to have it but that's about it.

Yea Im a ford guy, but driving chevys for work I realized they get better mpg, and of course the IFS frontend drives way nicer than fords imho. Im in the market for an 03-07 chevy/gmc w/5.3L and an x-cab shortbed probably. My toyota is still going but shes getting tired with 250k.

I hope you have better luck the I did with my Hemi Ram. At 20,000 miles trans was rebuilt. At 63,000 needed new head gaskets, shocks and had rust all along the the bottom body under the doors. I wasn't easy on mine and it was a beast and did what ever I asked of it. Just wish it lasted a little longer. I have a 2013 Tundra now. Way more civilized then the ram was. I do like the new body style and love the new interior on the Ram though.

that's one of the most refreshing things I've read in a long time. unlike the latest crop of asshats who feel the need to own a diesel for no other reason than to "roll coal."

What Lonnie says echos the truth, dodge is dodge and was never built well.

Ever seen one from the 80s hanging around anywhere-few if any b/c they all rusted out and broke lol.

Sorry, had to say it.

Just changed up the wheel color. Not always a fan of the satin black wheels, but needed a change for a little bit.

I always thought the same thing, that Dodges had junk trannys and rusted out before you put 50k on them. But the new Rams have a 6 speed 66RFE trans and have a warranty against rust for the first 100,000 miles, plus the 36k bumper to bumper sand the 100k power and drivetrain. So atleast if anything happens the warranty will cover it. If I have very many problems with it by 100k I'll just trade it in for a new one or sell it outright and get something else.

Thanks man, have a lot of time invested, money aswell. Really need to get it back to the track since I have upped the boost, from 5 to 12lbs. Hopefully I can get me a sub 11.4 time slip this time around.
