now you can just resize the original to about 1000 x 600 or so, or 600 x 400 if you are attaching the pic through your post 9just like an email attachment)

i like it. a picture doesnt have to be 100% technically correct for it to be one of the best in the world.

especially when combat is the focus. there is so much human drama, intrigue and realism to almost every picture that getting good shots is almost easy (hope that sounds right) since they wont let me back in the service, i would love to be a photo journalist "in it". ofcourse id be single again as well...or dead if i even asked the wife:ermm:

Not the best track to make my new Camera shine , I hated this track. Very bright and not much color unless your on the Lakefront.Windy and the sun was never in the right spot. You had to stay on something wet to get any good color .
I got alot of seat time in ,about 3000 shots last wk end :p

Yes, thats the one. Thanks!
After using it, I feel I made the right choice .Theres PLENTY of camera there for me for a long time to learn with.Even the kit lense was better by leap and bounds to the one they sold me with my XT.
Its going to be nice to have two cameras so I dont have to change lenses in the field anymore.

the woods is sure alot tougher to shoot than the MX !
It was fun though and I learned something new about my flash I did not know before.

oh man your in for it:p just stick to basics, ask the preacher if they allow photography during teh ceremony and if flash is allowed. catch all the big moments and take plenty of shots of the families along with the bride and groom

as for me, i learned that my new fangled camera has a setting from nikon that applied zero sharpening. most slr's are preset in the middle range for normal appearing pics, mine was set to zero or "soft". so for the past 2 months ive been shooting "soft focused pictures":eek2: i wonder what will happen now that its set properly:devil: i thought i was just loosing my touch...hehe

Some photos I took up in the Yukon and BC on my Mom's run of the mill digi cam.

My brother and I drove from Fairbanks, AK to Minnesota. We took the Alcan. With a good camera and some skills, theres endless amounts of photos to be taken there. It was the best scenery I have ever seen In my life.

To pull the look off you need the right lighting. The man who kicked off this look uses a ring flash and multiple off camera falsh heads to get the desired look and then edits for this look. Dave Hill is his name...great photographer. Another is Joey Lawrence...17 years old and a whiz with photoshop. he is booked forever doing work all over the world!

timing has improved mark, but exposures are still off (1st pic looks good) rest are washed out, overexposed and the colors are not natural

you have your exif data blocked so i cant offer any suggestions. are you shooting in manual or still letting the camera make decisions for you?

iso 400

2nd

1/2000
iso 1600
flash 1/1 hi-speed

3rd
f/5.6
1/1250
iso 800
flash 1/1 hi-speed
(should have gone 1st curtain flash to get the background)

4th
f/4
1/2500
iso 800
flash 1/1 hi-speed
(same with 3rd)

high iso, high shutter speed and available light are adding to why your shots are not looking normal (if inded you want them normal, i can only geuss)

front curtain is worthless for this type of shooting, your apeture will affect your flash, the shutter speed controls the ambient. using the flash at the begining (front) or rear (end) of the exposure is doing nothing for the picture.

and shooting at such a high shutter speed with such a low aperture is what is causing the colors to go away

Canon AE 1 was agreat camera in its day.

Get some 400 speed film, read up on the basics of photography, learn how to actually use your camera (no idiot mode on them) and enjoy it

Just a heads up....

I am selling 2 Nikon D200 bodies that will come with the vertical battery grip and 2 batteries each. $875 each however they will not come with lenses.

These work well, infact I took this shot with one of them this past weekend. These are the same cameras I use week in and week out.

this is kinda random, but i got really bored in class today. i went through the pics of the Spartan from last year, and i must say, Pappy, your camera is very fast. i felt like i was watching the wrecks in a freeze frame movie. it kept me amused for a while:D

That's as big as she get's, 800pixels. It looks unsharp but isn't.
I got a question, looking straight at the rider doing a table jump, the camera just does not want to focus on the subject. It always goes to the lip of the landing and its not even in the frame! I put it on center weighted and middle focus point, hardly any help. If I can find a shot i'll post it. Really hard to explain. Probably have to be there.

Pappy
07-07-2008, 09:50 PM
Focus on a point in the middle of teh table or off to the side. When teh rider comes into view your camera will not have to focus as much to pick up the rider and you should get better focus. Try using spot focus and the center focus point.

Pappy I want to know how your colours are so strong? Is it all in the exposure? Or is it mainly with the lens camera combo?

I just order a 70-200 mm F 2.8L IS lens for my Canon, and that picture there was shot with a standard 18-55 mm lens.

Its mainly in finding the light and getting the exposure dialed in. far to many people have adequate equipment and have no clue about making a good picture. last i checked you dont paint a great picture and claim it was the brushes that made it all possible..lmao

btw, check out the can am site for alot of shots. not that they are the greatest quality on there (slideshow, small etc) but take notice of the differing light and how it can make the shot jump. im one of the shooters for can am and the other guy (admin) both know how to shoot and you can see at different races and different parts of the country how light makes or breaks the shot 99% of the time.

ravage, i replied to your pm and i will explain the lighter color fenders. look at wimmers helmet and left rim....notice the highlighted spots? thats the sun. thats about as close as you will get with color rendition at noon with the sun overhead. then look at the fans in the back ground with white shirts and how they blew out. that is caused by the extreme white (255 on the histogram) and the diffusion from using a 300mm lens with a shallow depth of field.

In this shot, same moto probably taken within 10 minutes of the last pic, the sun is almost directly overhead. not the best time to shoot but we dont control when the pro's run. you have to try and meet in the middle and get the best exposure you can while running around for 20 minutes:p thankfully my cameras have a better dynamic range (range of light 0-255) then most point and shoots and even most mid level slr's. infact my bodies have better dynamic range then the full pro d3 slr....just one of teh reasons i use it over the pro body.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3158/2651270393_f016f034f9_o.jpg

now this shot to me hjas washed out yellow fenders, however the histogram is nice and fat and even. the blues and yellows in the helmet are spot on, and the red is correct in the riding gear. again, high sun, downward angle of shot and the yellow still registered more white to me, but i did not look the quad over to see if its fenders were faded, and when we are dealing with detail this crisp...a few shades can make alot of difference.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3261/2651986376_db981fc398_o.jpg

another example, no sun, flat lighting and there are three distinct yellows on the can am. histo gram is good, blacks could be brought up but overall well balanced. add bright overhead sun and the yellows would start to all brighten, and the lightest would fade to white
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3254/2654045355_fc3777b92b_o.jpg

and lastly, wimmer shot at early practice in a different state. light temp (white balance) is warmer, angle of sun is more usuable, exposure is dead on and the colors are about as true to life as if you were standing there. when they make a camera that has the color and shdow range of human eyes, i will sell my soul and buy one. until then you sometimes give up a little here to get a little there, but it all starts with a basic understanding of proper exposure.

depends on your budget and what you wish to do with the camera. you can buy a used digital slr for a basement price, some like the nikon d70 are running right now for $500.

ronny

I was looking at some of the d70 on ebay and found a few for pretty cheap but i also just wanted to your opinion on the nikon d60??

Thanks

Pappy

d60 isnt bad, d40 as well. all of those and the canon line in that range will do more then the average person will ever want or need.

hey pappy, being a Nikon guy i was wondering if you've ever used the AF-S DX VR Zoom-NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED lens. I've read all the pros and cons and am a little hesitant to buy but it's pretty much my only option aside from buying two lenses. so was wondering if you've used it is the creeping issue/image quality really that big of a problem? or are people just really nit picky.

Pappy
07-10-2008, 11:11 AM
yep, i had an early version and it sucked, but now have one of the latter units and its much better. the early models were soft, the lens would open non stop and was a real pita.

Pappy, All the camera talk is foreign to me. I was wondering with all the settings and lenses etc., you're talking about, is it a digital camera, or use film? The reason I ask is how sometimes you and other photographers are able to put pics up on the web so fast.

Next question: Are film cameras obsolete?

Pappy
07-10-2008, 01:37 PM
The basic terminolgy is all the same. There are distinct difference but when you get down to it, its the same.

film is dead for the average person, but very much alive in other photography fields. large and medium format, pinhole etc are all still highly sought after but remain expensive to purchase, use and develope.

Pappy
07-10-2008, 03:21 PM
Ok mark, lets try this. Here is the original image you sent me. Pose is fine, subject placement is fine however you have the sun almost or directly behind the subject over his right shoulder(hard shadow tells us what direction the light source is coming from). Saturation is way overdone, focus is fine but you can see his face is lost due to the shadow and the exposure is off causing loss of detail in shadow and highlights.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3027/2656944654_d714441452_b.jpg

I have edited the shot to show you that if given this location and light as the only choice, how i would have done it. I would have exposed for teh shadows on his face using spot metering and then opened up a stop to start....look at the lcd screen and make adjustments(bracket your exposure)

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3094/2656943034_7f539ffac2_b.jpg

When you get the exposure off, funny things happen to color as it will shift light and dark, and even the focus can appear off. Good rule of thumb and basic 101 type photography is to keep the sun behind you and over either shoulder. The more you learn , the more you will start seeing the light and know what it will do to your photo

Pappy
07-10-2008, 03:28 PM
Next shot

Lighting is similiar to your other shots. Sun is behind and almost straight overhead as the shados are short. Pose isnt bad, but you can see the effects of bad lighting and exposure

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2407/2656966094_b36f5c4b94_o.jpg

Again, same rules apply as above with how I would have approached it if given this as the only option of lighting. I would have changed the crop unless you had a reason for the building in teh shot. If it doesnt add to the picture then do what you can to get rid of it.

first, i never mentioned PS, i do use it, thats how i get the borders on my pictures.

as far as post processing, your camera can do most of the work if you know how to use it. and yes, PS is part of most serious photographers workflow, or some form of program that allows you to make adjustments to teh final image. if you drop off a roll of film at wally world, the machine that prints your elustrious 4x6 prinst makes adjustments based on the 35mm negative, the same way we do with photo editing software. notice thats EDITING not creation. many of todays photographers rely heavily on PS, I dont. I try and bring people exactly what i saw. im not discounting the PS work, some of it is truly amazing and i wish i knew how to do it!

if PS was the answer to all that is photographic, we wouldnt have 400 pictures posted in this thread that are out of focus, have wrong exposures or generally suck. your digital camera is a computer with built in PS....

btw...backlit snapshot using manual exposure, and balanced fill flash. its not hard folks, but if you want to take better pictures you cant just rely on the camera, you actually have to learn a few basic things and you would be amazed at how much better you can do

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3218/2658438847_c9c4fa6f15_o.jpg

sun behind left of subjects, white plastic took care of filling up the shadows. no flash, no ps. just start looking for the light, its there:p

My poor point and shoot gets it arse kicked by anything remotely bright white.. lol. It really doesn't like bright whites.

Using a little Canon SD750 P&S.

By next summer I'll have a decent DSLR (d80/d200). The P&S is good for learning "what not to do.." LOL.

Some eample of bright whites taking over my photos.. not really the best examples of good shots, but they work for showing the white balance issues.

Photos are 100% unedited.

This one is an ok shot even though the sun is directly overhead and not to my back. But even w/ the calm lighting the dome of the building is causing a bit of oversaturation of white. Even though the effect is pretty cool.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3242/2658561405_23464fe48e_b.jpg

Sun is over my shouler.. but the sun just hitting the canoes totally overtakes the scene. (No it's not a great shot anyway.. lol)
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3147/2658561409_cb89df16d3.jpg

Last is the fireworks.. time delay.. almost needs a filter of some sort. f.stop all the way down bright lights from the fireworks overtakes the photo.. get a lot of blue ghosting from the whites too.. looks like dusk even though it was 11pm.. but that's the long shutter w/ limited f-stop and not filter. Cant really fix that with a P&S I'd asume.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3289/2658565453_e4a2fd8eec.jpg

I've got a long ways to go.. but I'm having fun with the little point and shoot.

Pappy

bwamos, i like the 1st shot and yes P&S have limitations but are getting better every month it seems. I want a canon g9 just for a walk around camera.

ralph.....tsk tsk, you need some dynamic range for hdr, and for true hdr you need multiple exposures or your just tone mapping

Tone Mapping / Psuedo HDR makes perfect sense to me.

But the true HDR has me a bit stumpped. Do some of the top end DSLR cameras actually have the ability to take multiple exposures at the exact same instant? Still shots you could take multiple shots, but I don't really see how it could be done on an action shot any other way.

Pappy
07-15-2008, 12:56 PM
i think a few of the high end point ahd shoots are claiming hdr, but since they are not 32 bit tiff files and can only be displayed in 8 bit jpegs they are just doing a bracketed exposure and tone mapping

there really isnt a way to create a true hdr with action, you would never get the files aligned...yep you got it

bwamos
07-15-2008, 02:45 PM
Gotcha.
At first glance it seems like the photos that would have the best look in HDR are also the ones that tend to look the best in good old Black & White. It seems contrast is more important than color diversity.

The image itself wasnt what I meant, it was cropping the phoot in general to bring out what you are focusing on(the subject) not what around it so much.Sometimes that brings out what the main focus is in the photo. Did that make sense? I havent slept much this week. :p lol
Is that a point and shoot you are using ?

Mark,
How are shooting that indoor stuff??
Im having a hell of a time with the fluoresence and slower shutter!:scary:
Im trying to keep my ISO no more than 800-1000 or things get way too grainy.
Even night MX under the lights has been tough. :ermm:

I shoot raw indoors, so when I get home I can change the White Balance from Auto to Tungsten often or it looks fine the way it is. Hopefully that will help with your fluoresence problem!

The lighting wasn't great there so I was shooting at ISO 3200, shutter's averaging 1/200, f2.8 all night, and pan, pan, pan the subject! I used the flash a few times but that far away it just wasn't looking right :ermm: .

I would have gotten better shots and would have used the strobes but you couldnt get in the benches and the first 5-7 rows of seats were all covered so I had to shoot in the crowd all night.. fun.

This is when I wish I had a D300.. mmm. haha.

Pappy
08-07-2008, 07:22 PM
it goes back to exposure. if your metering with a bunch of teh sky in the shot, youw ill need to stop down to keep the rest of teh image from washing out. 5 stops of light is about all the best dslrs can handle.

Thank you, and please, call me Mark lol. I would change my username if I knew how lol. I like shooting overcast. It is fun and takes some of the headache out of picking your angles some but I can't get the exposure for the sky down pat. The local race was only light overcast so it wasn't as bad as the national weekend but I just can't seem to get it. Not much practice at it either though.

Looking a bit better Mark, but most of them are now over exposed (highlights washed out, lots of chromatic abberation etc)

Also, study up on white balance, its your best friend with digital. You can try and make changes in post processing, but getting it right in the camera is where you will find the shots that look like your standing there in person!

And why include the sky if it does nothing for the picture. An overcast day is blah, and so are 99.9% of the pictures people take allowing the sky to fill the frame!

Honestly couldn't say. Never tried one or even seen one in person. From some of the reviews it's a decent camera. Compared to the Nikon D60 it's better other than picture quality. The Nikon seem's to be sharper, crisper, and more vibrant(Nikon's are always more vibrant i find). Some other's on here might be able to help you better then I can. Other than that, do your research.

What kind of telephoto are you using to get the detail of the moon like that?
