here is a shot that most photographers will take during a race. It is properly exposed for the ambient light with no detial in the riders face. Its not a bad picture, but it is to me (I took it) This is the same shot people have been happy to hand over $20 bucks for at tracks all over the country.

Now, here is the way I want it to look. Much better detail, shadows add depth. Rider and atv are jumping out at you. And it was done in the camera during a race with techniques that i use with flash units and adjusting the camera(manual mode only for me)

Photography is subjective, and it is about what I want to show over what you want to see or even like. I do know that people are flipping out over them simply because most can't get good shots of themselves in actual race enviroments in the woods!

I guess I came off a little too negative, I'm not saying its necessary a bad thing, but sometimes it just looks a little too unnatural. BTW, I was actually wondering how you did get it so bright, I was like "jeez, what a flash!" but now I understand seeing your pictures of your "studio"

One Bad 400..thats the cool thing about photography, you can like it or not! Everyone has differing tastes. I dont worry about positive or negative critizism, its all part of doing this.

Here's a quick picture from last night... no post processing from RAW to JPG... I have another 30 or so I'm going to see what I can get. The originals look much better than the compressed version posted here.

Eric, I was going to suggest something for the next time you go to that spot, but I checked codys d40x and it doesnt offer the multiple exposure option:( I dont know each step to do it if you have PS, but you might be more knowledgable then me with it.

reset the shot on tripod, and take a shot about 10 minutes before dark when the sky gets that deep blue hue to it(expose for the sky). Then take another shot after dark exposed for the lights just like you did in the above shot. merge the two in PS. you will end up with the rich blacks, spectacular lights and the deep blue in the sky! I wish I knew PS ..lol so ill have to do it in camera.

Thanks for the info - I plan on going back there again, next shot will be more from the point rather than the side shot shown above. Also a big mistake I did not notice until I viewed the photo information is that all pictures were taken with ISO 400 - I should have adjusted this as well. Not the best for night shots. Live and learn I guess!

I'm going to play around with the RAW's and see if I can get some over and under exposures... I'm a complete noob when it comes to PS - time to learn something new!

A couple basic action shots that I could never get before with my old P&S. We took my nephew downtown to a few kids events. Both of these are fairly large crops - I need a longer lense! I do have to say I've been very happy with the D40 so far - being a complete DSLR noob. If I add a few more lenses then this setup will be perfect for me. :)

lol...It could be a DC commercial. You guys know how to take some awesome pictures. You wouldn't think it takes talent until the average joe goes out there and tries to capture the best of something and half of his hand is in the lens or misses half of the object they are trying to capture. Or you could just be like me and just take crappy pictures with a disposible :p

QJ, for anything used, please go to B&H. I've been in the store and eveything in the used department looks BRAND NEW! my friend bought a 15-30 3.5 Sigma lens for his camera and saved something like 300 bucks and a flash that he saved 30. If he had never told me they were used, i would have never known. They look perfect. I would suggest BH for used products!

Lens help:
I am in the market for buying a better lens for my Cannon XTI and was wondering what should I look for in a lens?
I would be doing motocross shots as well as skiing and other outdoor shots.

I was considering getting the 70-200mm USM lens, with a F/2.8L

Thanks for the help.

WEll I think Ive got some braggin rights after last night!
Im going to have to dig up last years photos and compare, but I averaged ALOT more photos this year after shooting all year long , I think I found my cameras "sweet spot":D
I must say that indoor racing is some of the BIGGEST PITA types of photography I have EVEN DONE!:scary: It is sooooo freakin HARD!
The only thing I dont like is the grain, but I cant do much about that I guess. My camera is now my problem ,not the lense .
Pappy, why do I my shots keep looking like theriders possesed by the devil?? I have the no red eye set on my camera.
Is that just a flash thing? I still had to shoot hand held between 80 and 200,so there will be some imperfections .

This was the 1st full night of photos that I shot in flash all night (1200 shots worth!:p )
Is it normal for my flash batteries to get very hot ?

My flash woudnt work,so I took out the new battteris and replaced them and it was fine, but the batteries was very, very hot .I was using Lithiums due to cold temps.

ALOT of "old school" racing last night. I got some tight ones of the Trikes too.

its because your using on camera flash;) once you take the flash off the camera, you can get away from that look. indoor action shots (basketball etc) means getting set up before the event with remote flashes. outdoor is easier because you can control some of the light fall off where indoors you want to fill in the subject with the available lighting

So how would I set up in a setting like this ?
I am pretty much up by a wall most of the time or leaning up against a side rail.
The fumes were my biggest obsticle all night and when the dirt got to flingin,I got blur.
The quads were the hardest to shoot out of them all.:o lol

I dont shoot this stuff enough to spend alot of money to set up for it, but I think its something I looked forward to conquering after last years shots . Ill go back each winter just to see improvments.
They still have a LONG ways to go ,but I feel better knowing I improved alot this year.:)
Had I not used flash, most of my shotswouldhave been horrible. It most def. helped freeze the action from blur.
I played in the dark with some shots and had some great results.
My hats off to those who can shoot indoors.:ermm:

on camera flash has been a big no no for wedding photogs forever, and in the past few years its found its way into other types of photography. its really blowing up in sports and photo-journalistic styles of shots and i dont see it ending soon. i can almost duplicate my studio lights in the field at a fraction of the cost and they are portable:p

Rockwell explains it pretty good here http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/histograms.htm

i use mine if i can not chimp the lcd screen due to the sun, and they will mislead you if your using flash with heavily mixed light but they can get you out of a jam when needed

Super job!
The histogram has been a life saver for me,but there have been a few times I still liked my shots a tad bit lighter than what it said.

I agree with Pappy, I lost several photos being under exposed,so I set mine to being a tad bit lighter and it seemed to baleace out better.
I shot this photo with my histogram indoors and the light was just about right!:)

Pappy, do you ever get shots of red eye out there,or do you do a full light set up prior to those shots?
Ive never got red eye until shooting indoors, never outside before that I can remember.

Pappy
12-08-2007, 10:06 PM
i dont shoot on camera flash so red eye usually doesnt show up as its mainly caused by light bouncing off the back of the retina when flashed. since my flash units are not direct ...no problems even when its dark dark dark

Only a month away before we head south to start up the 08 season...every one got their finances in order, gonna be a ***** on the road this year. I havent nailed it down yet, but it looks like i will be spending a few days at each national instead of just one...that should provide me with some new stuff to try some new techniques on, and some new riders to shoot. I think I will go full time again, lots of demand for good shots these days.

My Girlfriend Goes to school for commercial advertising, and her school has an AWESOME Hookup for all the Adobe Products, I got CS3 Extended for about $200. I dont really see any HUGE differences in between CS2 and CS3, just a few new tools.

Quick question for you guys, I just got a Rebel XTi for christmas and am just starting to play around with the features and learning what it can do, but I am really interested in the shutter speed feature. I havent had the chance to try it in the daylight but when I changed the shutter speed to something pretty fast, all my pictures came out DARK...but when I used the flash they turned out, but with the flash the fastest setting i could use was 1/200. Is the reason I cannot use the faster settings because I do not have enough light?

Whats your ISO set at?
When you say fast, what was the speed set at?
What time of day and what kind of light were you shooting them in?
And last, might help to post the photo to show everyone. ;)

when you increased the shutter speed, you reached a point where you started underexposing the pictures and that is why they went dark.

the flash will only sync up to a certain shutter speed

Fred55
12-27-2007, 07:27 AM
I was shooting indoors at night lol not the best I know. The shutter speed was around 1/2000 and the pictures were VERY VERY dark, almost to a point of not being able to make out anything. I am thinking that they are so dark because the only light available was from from the house lights and it wasn't enough for such a fast speed.

The faster the shutter speed the less time light is let through. aka.. less light for exposure. (that's half a millisecond). I'm no expert (far from it) but for that kind of shutter speed you will definatly need some auxiliary lighting in an indoor setting. Probably need it for most outdoor settings also, lol. That's a pretty fast shutter speed.

Withoug auxiliary lighting in an indoor setting, you're probably going to be shooting something like 1/100 or lower on a tripod, no? Or using a flash at 1/200.

Granted I've only used Film SLR's very casually, lol. I really need to buck up and get myself a mid-pack Digital SLR. I love photography, but have no tools. ;)

So heres a question...
How does a photographer go about shooting photos in a very dark area of the riders during a race w/o he flash interferring ?
I have a race in the spring I will be at doing this and I would NEVER want to blind a rider during a race.
This will be a MX/Endro.

hell im still learning this digital stuff so i would probably confuse us both:p i just made a calibration to one of my cameras on the LCD brightness and screwed up about 20 shots so dont think i dont make mistakes:p

as far as the colors, i dont tweak them. harlen and shane both shoot canon and we all agree that nikon is a bit hotter on the saturation and i even turned mine down in camera!

Personally, I view these cameras as computers, which they are. And you need to learn to adjust the camera to get what you want out of it (beyond the actual settings used to take a picture etc) This is the area I had no clue about but I am slowly learning to put it all together

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2085/2143896549_b575bd7561_o.jpg

These were with the new lens and as I stated earlier, I have to learn where it likes to shoot. It was overcast and cloudy but using the strobes I could punch it up

Your making me miss the dunes!!
GOOD TIMES!
I missed my annual trip this past year :(

Can I ask what camera your shooting with ?
Also,what lense and ISO?
Im seeing grain and some color adjustments that would really bring out the colors :)
Also, try shooting with the sun behind you when you can . I try to use it as "my flash" behind me when I can ,it really helps on the darkness in the rider .
I tried a polarizer at the dunes and it made some nice colors pop out with clouds and blue sky.

What dunes were you at?

For post processing work I use Adobe Lightroom and CS3. Thankfully I can usually just work with white balance to bring out the shot I took as I feel it is the one area that digital can't quite nail down. And good photography starts with you, and should need little if any work afterwards. Get the basics, and I mean basics down and you would be surprised how well the average person and camera can do!

I use flickr although I have to be careful what i upload because a few of my shots have been taken wiithout my permission or payment for their use in commercial advertising etc. I am not sure if photobucket offers different sized photos off the original that you upload, but I know flickr does.

I actually really like my camera software. I am not now starting to TRY and figure out PS, but havent got too far yet . lol :p
I actually like trying to give my all to the original picture anyways, but would liek to get more creative with a few shots I have taken .

Oops.. deleted my other post. Got sucked in sorry.. forgot it was the photography thread.

Back on the subject.. I've bene looking at either an older Nikon D70 or newer D80 Setup. Both appear to be decent starter cameras.

Is the color histogram on the D80 that much better than the b&w histogram of the D70? Trying to decide if it's worth the extra cash.

bwamos - get the d80. its very very very close to what i am using and is superior to the d70 (i have one of those as well)

i also have 2 D200's here that I would be willing to part with as my new bodies should be arriving any day. these are used ofcourse, but as you can see work very well:D both will include battery grips with batteris and either a 50mm 1.4 or a small zoom lens, chargers etc. ready to be the next me with either of these bad boys:eek:

each one should sell at $1250

thats a d200 body, battery grip, 2 batteries (takes 2 in the grip) a card (1 gb I believe) choice of lens and battery charger. I garuntee they work ofcourse, most of the pictures you have seen from me in the past two weeks have been from these units. I can takee credit card as well, paypal or a check. I wouldnt sell junk camera equipment and if i dont sell these, they will be around my neck all season and i will save my new bodies for interior work.

Well ...ya''ll can have that weather !! :p lol
Mud SUCKS!
FORGET THAT!:huh
I had HORRIBLE shots in the mudfest . It was cold and I got alot of blur shots.
We had flash floods, blizzards, ice and 60MPH winds on the way home.
Water so deep that for the 1st time in WORCS histroy, they had to cancel a race. Not the typical for AZ this time of year. lol
The kids would have NEVER made it to just the holeshot :(
It was pretty bad out there and I cant even imagine how many motors are now toast.
I think literally like half the riders didnt make it !:eek2:
Not sure on the pic pappy... what is it?

This trail turned this deep in 1 hour. It was all the way up to the fenders

I am leaning towards the Canon 580EXII speedlite unit, or do you think that the 430EX is better?

QJ,

What rain gear were you using ? I've been using the Kata E-702 with the E-704 Sleeve Kit (2 Sleeves).
http://www.kata-bags.com/Item.asp?pid=229&perentId=4&ProdLine=4
I haven't used it in any heavy or even moderate rain but in the light stuff it has worked great.. other than fogging.. but still work's great !

I'm not sold on that Camera Armor. I think your just gonna spend more time trying to hit the button's. And if it's not a tight fit it's going to constantly rub and leave wear mark's, so there goes your re-sale.

400exBro,

I think it depends on how much you want to spend. The 580EXII is definitely better. Faster, weather-sealing, can be used as your primary slave and on and on.
I'm using the 430EX and it work's great. Would definitely recommend it. And cheaper !

Well if the 580 is that much better I don't mind spending the extra cash, but then again i wouldn't mind some other lenses.

I do a lot of outdoor shooting, so I am not sure if the 580 would have an advantage over the 430.

I don't think it's that much better.. but don't hold me to it ! I've never used one. The money you save could certainly be put towards some good glass.

from what i heard the 580 is alot better but if your not going to be using it on camera and wirelessly then i wouldnt even bother with a canon flash.. sure there good for ettl if your using on camera but if your using wirelss with pocket wizards, i would just pick up a vivitar 285HV for 89 bucks at Bhphoto.com .. i use it on camera also, it works fine, just a bit bulky. I deff wanna get a 580 in the future to have as a good on camera flash tho

I agree with the others, but have you got some good glass yet?
You can get a 580ex(I have it ) and bought it the same time when I bought my sport lense. They have come down a little in price and you can pick one up for about 360.00 before shipping.
If you can plurge, get the 580ex. The 430ex is rated well also.

As far as the rain gear I used ,it was this

http://www.ritzcamera.com/product/444650055.htm

innexpensive, disposable, but combersome and I felt it was a real PITA to work with . I need something that works better .

I have some new photos to add to the thread Ill post up shortly, but I had a question for you lap top users...

I just started uploading photos to my lap, and I noticed while working on some race coverrage today that the colors are WAAAYY different on my lap vs. my home computer???
They appear deeper in contrast on my home computer but look great on my lap... if I was to edit any of the color, I get the opposite effect:confused:
Is there a way to correct this on my lap? I think my home computer is more true to color than the laptop is right now.
Does it have something to do with lap screen being a dif. kind of material maybe?

I have noticed a big difference between a Monitor (not plasma or flat), and a laptop, and flat screens. they show the colors better, and are more vibrant. and the screen brand does play a deal in this ( i dont think it is a real big one) i will check on my bro's laptop to see how to change this. i personally like having the more vibrant colors, instead of the other, it made a good pic i had look very dark and horrible.

Pappy

my laptop blows as far as colors. i refuse to make any corrections until i get them home and look them over on my flatscreen. i forget the name of the calibrating program, but it made a world of difference on my home pc. i checked out harlens dell the other day and it has a much better screen

this shot is good, and it will look better to m one i get home and see it:p
