With a non VR lens, this would have been blurry i believe. The dark shadows would have had me pre metering the light to keep a fast enough shutter speed.

Ill never have time to learn and unsterstand that program :ermm: I've got ALOT of hours in on photoshop. It's really not that hard to do the BW/color, but i've been doing it for a while, so i'm not sure how hard it would be to learn. I'm probably the 2nd best photoshopper on this site (next to Shift_DVS, of course, he's GOOD and I think Ralph is better then I am) but I started out just asking people how to do stuff:p

If you want help with anything i'd call myself proficient with the program, so I could probably help you out.

Basically, you just do a 0 transparency mask on the subject, invert it, tweak your background and remove the mask...just learned how to do it a little while ago myself. I still need lots of practice though. lol

theres NO WAY I can take pics with mine on a slow shutter or the pics do not turn out well :( I've taken some pretty sucessfull car pictures, a good friend of mine lives right next to a major highway, so I take some pictures there. I just put my camera on Action and shoot. I also find that it's best to use MF because on AF it's too easy to focus behind the desired target, especially in MX.

I worked with metering a little more. I had a hard time else over exposing all the white areas ,or under exposing the asphault.

those are not very impressive as well. just desaturated backgrounds and a few filters... keep at it though we all have to start somewhere (that's all I could find to do at the start as well).

Cut the kid a break. I think he has some skill and he shouldnt have a problem getting better. I dont feel im anything that special either.

I do think he should try to do something else besides desaturated backgrounds though.

Try to start making your own brushes. Instead of using pretty pre made fonts make them look grungy yourself. Stay away from using just a filter on the whole image. Filters are great when used in complex combinations but on a whole image its repulsing.

Background eraser tool may work good for you but if you ever have anything difficult and complex with a bad background your gonna need to know how to use the polygonal lasso tool. Its the best way.

Being good at photoshop is more than making things look pretty. Try to learn the shortcuts so you get more proficient with it.

ctrl alt z is undo/back
ctrl d is deselect
ctrl t is transform

those are just the simple ones. just about everything in ps is availiable by a shortcut and can make you work alot faster and efficient.

Good but nothing special.

you have been banned once already Id be careful what you stir up from now on...

Also, this in NOT the photoshop topic, its fine to have "constructive critisism" but if there is going to be direct flamingand direct jabs, dont bother ever posting . This has been a great topic for everyone...

Quick Photography Question for you guys....

I shoot with a Fuji E550 Camera, Here'a a pic:

http://www.recommendedbuys.co.uk/images/fujifinepixe550zoom.gif

Anyways, When I take a picture, It comes out dark and fuzzy...I'm not sure why, I have it set on Auto Like I always.

For instance, when I took these pictures, they came out dark, and I tried to touch them up in PS (Brightness/Contrast/Levels/ect, but as you can see, they still don't look great...

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a185/D6Adam/5-1.jpg

I figure it may be from poor lighting, but still it's a 6MP camera, and I had it set on the Highest, (800 ISO)

It takes decent pictures outside, just inside is where it's fault lies..

I'm no photo expert by any means but I have found personally that by using the full manual mode and just messing around with settings a little always turns out better pictures than the "auto" mode does.

That just shows the difference in picture qualiy of your slightly higher end equipment compared to the lower end slr's and the point and shoots.

I really plan on getting into photography a little more. I plan on taking a class or two next semester at college to learn some more of the basics. Just need to start saving to get the camera I want.

the clarity is the equipment, the exposure is the photographer and how he uses the light thats available.

If you mess with the gamma correction a little you can get a much better color quality. Hope you don't mind me messing with your pic. And uploading to the board kills the quality for me.

I'm ordering a camera on wednesday and I need to decide which one to get. I would appreciate any input you all have on any of these cameras.

I've narrowed them down to the Canon XTi, Sony Alpha 100, and the Nikon D80.

Right now I'm leaning towards the Nikon just because of some of the reviews I've read just put it ahead of the group just slightly.

Any input is welcome.

I'd go with either the Canon or the Nikon. You will have alot more lens choices with those two.And between those two it boils bown to which you like better,a larger body camera(Nikon) or the smaller body(Canon). If you can,go pick each one up and see which fits your hands better. They are both good.It is just personal preference.

Just sold my old point and shoot. So today I ordered a Nikon D80 with some accessories. Link (http://www.expresscameras.com/prodetails.asp?prodid=621005&up=620700&start=1) to the package deal I got. I figured it would be a good starter package and hold me over for a while. I am going to try and get into photography a little more. I'm trying to learn some of the basics from a friend of mine that shoots all the photos for the midwest bikini team, and tons of models.

I am supposed to take some photos at a wedding for a good friend of mine in a little over a week. Just wondering if you all had any experience or suggestions for wedding photography.

And a pic for good measure.

Congrats!! You are gonna have soooo much fun learning .
I have had my Camera since Dec of this year, and Ive already shot close to 10,000 pics with it .:D
If there is ANY advice I can give is... read ALOT about your camera, dont be afraid to experiment with all the settings, angles ect... and the BEST way to improve is just keep shooting!

My next invest will be some kind of Flash, I just have no idea what yet.

QUESTION....

When I use my flash, I am not able to do any speed shots or I get blur and it only shoots one pic.
With an External flash, will it be better?

I just wondered how stadium shooters work with flash.

I had the camera on order, but when I called to confirm the order they said that they were currently backordered 4-6 weeks, so I canceled my order.

No the kits don't come with a battery or charger. That it were they make their money ($199 for battery and charger) ebay is only $50-60.

I canceled the order but I plan on reordering from the website or a similar site. From my experience it is better to call to place the order than to order off the net.

QJ.....it depends on the camera and the flash. Most higher end digital slr's will allow you to shoot at a much higher shutter speed and have the flash sync correctly.

Got a question. I'm gonna re order my camera, but now I might go another route. I've pretty much decided on the Nikon D80. What I want to know now is if it is better to go with two seperate lenses (like a 28-80 and 70-300) or to go with a single large range lense (like a 28-300)? I like the idea of only having one lense to keep track of, but will the quality suffer as a result of the large range?

Thanks

If it was me, I would get a smaller lense AND a 28-200 or 300. I cant tell you how many times Ive needed a close up lense and didint have it .

Those are some really sweet shots.

So I'll probably go with the separate lenses (28-80 & 70-300) and probably pick up some other lenses down the road. Right now I just need to get better at the basics before I get in to deep.

the body and small lens are not bad, but the 300 zoom is probably a 5.6 lens and will work so so for mx work. id try and find a deal without the 300mm lens and buy a decent lens later on.

Ok that makes sense. After consulting ebay it seems that a popular lens is the nikon nikkor 75-300 f4.5-5.6. Is this what I want? I want to do it right the first time around, but trying not to hurt the pocket book to bad.

What are some other repuable brands for lenses? I don't know a good from bad one except looking at the price tags.

So maybe I should look at this one and add on later?

Your pocketbook will get hurt, and if you want to do it right then get the new 15mm-200 Nikon VR lens. If its a 70-300 you must have, then the Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR is what you want. Its $1600 but if your serious about photograpy, your money is always best spent on good glass. the 3.5-5.6 lenses are cookie cutter lenses and you will kick yourself once you do get a good lens:p

Thanks for all the help. After looking at the prices, I'll just swing by the local Ritz camera store and pick one up personally. Gotta pay sales tax, but having it the same day, and having someone to take it back to, for peace of mind, would be worth it.

Now this is a cool thread! I'm just starting out so any tips would be great.

I just picked up the Olympus Evolt 500 DSLR. I'm looking at getting better at this hobby and I would like to know where I could improve.

This weekend I'm working on the illusion of movement with the camera and the subjects...I'll post those on Monday or Tues.

My equipment:

Olympus Evolt 500E

Lenses:

14-45mm f/3.5-5.6

40-150mm f/3.5-4.5 Zuiko Lenses

No flash yet. That's another $300.00. (wife won't let me get it for another month or so...grr)

Here are some pictures I took last week.

Not bad!!!
I would say for one on one rider photos, maybe zoom in abit more,a little fill flash(dont shoot facing the sun if you can help it) get some angle shots, those are always fun !Play in the manual modes,if theres one thing I did learn to do right from the beginning from the photographers here is Imoved out of Auto mode immediately. And have fun!Photography is almost as addicting as quads, and about just as expensive!:scary: :p

Well I never did get a SLR, since some other financial things came up. Looking at buying a D50 to begin shooting with. I am debating whether to buy the basic kit with the 18-55 lens, or just buying the body and buying a half way decent lens.

I can pick up a used body at the local camera shop for around $250-300. I then thought of spending up to $500 on one ortwo lenses. I really would like an 18-135mm lens and a fisheye to play with right now.

Any suggestions, tips, or opinions?

And a pic

You will be better off getting just the body and spending a little extra for a good lens.

Well I won a D50 body last night on ebay for $350 shipped. Now I just need to buy a lens. Should I stay with Nikon lenses or are there other brands that are decent. I don't need a real high end lens yet. I just need something that will work decent while I learn more about photography.

Thanks

From talking with harlen and pappy, and a little first hand experience the lens makes the camera. People are gonna tell you to get the best one there is. The more you spend the more you get.

BUT, i think a lower end lens will still be good for now as you develop your eye and technique. I'm not the greatest photographer but i know theres worse out there. Go for the cheaper lens and just shoot as much as you can. Play with settings. This way i believe you will benefit much more once you do get one of those fancy scary expensive lenses.

Ralph made some excellent points.

As far as alternative lens choices go,Sigma makes some good quality ones.Look on Ebay for them too.

something like this (http://www.amazon.com/Sigma-18-200mm-3-5-6-3-Digital-Cameras/dp/B0007U0GZC/ref=sr_1_13/002-7865381-5128813?ie=UTF8&s=photo&qid=1174434649&sr=1-13) work for starting out with? Seems like decent focal range with out having multiple lenses and it has a relatively low price.

Yeah a body is only as good as the glass infront of it. Get the best lens you can afford, you deffinatley won't regret it. And try to stick to either Canon or Nikon genuine glass, stay away from sigma and those other brands.

Hey mx428,aren't you a photojournalist for the site? What races have you covered?

Pappy
03-20-2007, 09:12 PM
Todays cameras all do more then the pro level cameras of just a few short years ago! more bells and whistles can actually cause you problems if you do not take the time needed to learn what they do. Even the higher end point and shoot digitals are fantastic for most situations!

If you are serious about photography then buy the most camera you can while allowing you to buy the absolute best(fastest) lens you can afford. think of the lens as the suspension on a quad, stock versus custom axis.

Far to often people buy equipment and when they dont get the results they think they should, they blame the equipment. photography is far more then who spent what, the best shots come from you combining the tech stuff with your artistic creativity!

Pappy
03-20-2007, 09:22 PM
Dont get bogged down with what to buy, get something you can afford and learn all you can. Knowing what to get a picture of sometimes means far more then how techincally correct it is.

Pappy
03-20-2007, 09:28 PM
the biggest thing is to practice!

when a pro rider is coming at you at 60 mph, you dont have time to think and if you know your gear you can make it all come together!

Pappy
03-20-2007, 09:40 PM
the drawback for me with digital is that i LOVE black and white. I havent played with it much(mainly because i dont know how to edit pictures much beyond cropping and resizing:p) i havent thus far been able to match digital black and white with what i can get from my 35mm

Pappy
03-20-2007, 09:45 PM
and with regards to flash, it is a love/hate thing for me. i know its needed but I REFUSE to shoot it at oncoming riders in the woods unless its known ahead of time so the rider expects it. i prefer dramatic lighting that shows exactly what i saw over flash most of the time

I don't have much of an opportunity to get to races beings i'm 15 and can't drive, and I would feel bad having my parents shuffle me around since theres no tracks that allow quads within like an hour and a half. So basically I never did anything, so yeah I never really was one i guess. But I prefer just shooting for fun and having a good time anyway, not trying to cover all the motos and stuff. Just not for me i guess.

Ok guys,

I had taken a lot of pictures and I was experimenting with shutter speed and ISO

Well I deceided to work with the ISO setting at about 400 because I don't have a flash to do fill flash (I doubt the on board flash will work like I want it to)

The shutter speed was any where from 1/500 to 1/1250.

I would like to know If I should go with a slower shutter to get more of the blurred back ground and the effect of movement with the subject?

Camera is the Olympus Evolt 500

The lens I was using is: Zuiko Digital 40-150mm f3.5-4.5 lens (equivalent to 80-300mm in 35mm photography)

I'm trying to be more on the subject as to make them the focus of the picture. Should I zoom out a little more or come into the subject?

i was on one knee actually:p if i was setting up a shot like that i would have used a double and been completely underneath the rider etc....but grabbing shots from a pratice track and not knowing what a rider will do had me on a table top and slightly off to one side. this rider^ liked an outside line which helped as he would sail overhead very close to the edge of the jump. a few laps around and i was able to get a keeper.

i also tweaked my flash output each lap and picked the shot i liked best.

It's the new Sony Alpha-100 DSLR. The review's on it are pretty good, and my dad has been considering getting one for us. It's aroudn $800 for the basic setup, but all of the minolta len's will fit on it as well. For that price, get a Rebel XT.

i also tweaked my flash output each lap and picked the shot i liked best.
what lense did you use?
I may have to try that again this wk end!

Maybe the jumps were too magnified with the lense I was using or Maybe they was not high up enough for me to catch it.
I only have a portrait lense and two tele. lenses right now.I too was on the side of the jump even kinda on my side.

I really want a fisheye soon, but with all this travleing with Nationals I cant buy anything for a bit.:ermm:

Yup.. those specs explain it.. lol I dont have a lense that small :(
Maybe I could still try the 28-80 3.5-5.6 I have and see how it goes.
Thanks Pappy :)
As for the flash... I still dont get it .:ermm:

meter your light, set the camera for the correct exposure without flash and then use manual flash. start at say 1/2 power, and chimp it from there.

i try and use riders as the pass by to get everything good to go and then when i see a picture happen in front of me i take it. on this shot, he only whipped it good once, and i wasnt ready(i would have liked to added another step in flash output to brighten the underside of the bike)

The pictures are of Brett Cue I think he said they were taken during a shoot for the Thor gear. He posted them on motonews a few months ago, I remeber someone saying they were taken with a 10mm fisheye. I think the photographers name was Chris, not sure about that though. Judging by the dirt they were probably taken at or near Brett's house in Enid, Oklahoma. I never said i took the photos, I was just showing the cool pictures that could be taken with one.

**EDIT** I found the post i was talking about on ronronmx

"Very cool shots. Chris did an awesome job.

Squid48, it's a 10mm fisheye lens, though I don't know what brand."

The original motonews link doesnt work, i guess the thread is gone...

More- the photographer is Chris H. from AmatuerMX magazine (as you can tell by the logo). Here's what he told me about what he was using-

Glad you like the shots. The lens I was using was the 10.5mm f/2.8 Nikkor. Definitely an awesome lens and well worth the price.

I didn't mean to make it seem as if i took the pictures, i'm used to dirtbike message boards where everyone recognizes logos like AMX or motoplayground. my bad.
