I have read some great results from this lense for the Canon.
Its the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens
I think I might buy one and try it .

I already have a 70-200mm 2.8 so I was looking for something like a 24-70 like that lens above to get good up close pictures, not just for moto but as a walk around lens. And a bunch of girls make me take myspace pictures for them:o

the 50mm on a digital body is closer to a 85mm. it doesnt posses a ton of close focusing but works extremely well for a walk about and portrait lens

I've learned alot but i'm still unsure about lens mm in relation to real life situations.

the closest focusing distance for that lens is 1.25 feet. so in real life, anything closer then that would not focus either with af or manual. thats pretty standard as far as distances and each lens will vary. to get closer with full frame shots you will need to start looking at a macro lens or close up filters for the lens your asking about etc. for an all around lens, the 24-70 looks to be a great little zoom. the lens selection from canon is where they have an edge over nikon, but i hear that may soon be changing

When I upgrade from my 20D to a better body I will look into Nikon's, but due to the fact that I already have an L series 70-200 2.8 and probably this coming in a few weeks it seems like it wouldn't be worth it to go to a d200 or something similar and have to get a new arsenal of lenses. Although resale on good condition L series is pretty good, I wouldn't loose that much selling them and replacing them with Nikon equivalents.
Oh i'm also going to get one of those battery pack vertical grips too, that seems like a worthwhile investment.

i was in the same boat, i had a few higher end lenes and did not want to lose out by switching to a canon. no worries, nikon and i get along great:p
i have the nikon 17-55 2.8 prime and its a great lens, but i have to work with it alot more. with wider lenses and scenes full of things to distract the AF i get alot of throw outs using it. im getting better with however
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1058/979510308_7bd26f0acf_b.jpg
for me, a prime lens 50-135 would be all i would ever need as long as it focused as fast as my 70-200 and 300 2.8. 99% of my shots are taken at 135mm

Thanks - those are great! Thats the type of photography I really would like to get good at.
In my personal opinion, the subject or "view" is more important than the actual quality of the photo.
I think this picture is up there as one of my favorites - I used a very old 1.3 MP P&S (took this 5+ years ago) taken from a boat that was NOT steady - the quality is horrible, but the picture itself turned out great IMO....if that makes sense! :D I do wish I had a better camera at the time...

QJ.....this is an example of in camera defocus. I am not sure if canon offers it and you may be limited to using filters of varying effect. I use it when I shoot people to soften lines etc.

No, hes from P.a and shoots for one of the local newspapers. Also does alot of side work and has a huge portfolio of stock photography he sells through alamy. He pretty much taught me everything I know but I have gotten out of photography for the most part. Used to shoot somewhat professionaly myself but no longer do. The occasional side job for friends thats it. Some of my older stuff.

Not exactly on my list of life goals, but ittl help me pay for gas to drive to the races. I've been talking to alot of the right people and pretty soon I might be able to start getting some magazine gigs.

If you want to shoot professionally for motorcross, go to as many races as you can and shoot shoot shoot. Get yourself a very nice and professional portfolio. Then go to a few big races and start hanging around one or two of the best mx photogs there are for tips.
When I was shooting for my neighbor who raced in the arca remax series, I got to meet and learn from a couple of the best nascar photogs in the biz. But as I said, I got out of it before I even got started really. My day job pays more anyway :D

i would have been at a lower angle then the riders head and shot it from the opposite angle, used a remote flash to balance the shadows and used more depth of field....but thats MY style so it may not work for you.

I havent found anyone that really can crituque offroad/racing beyond the general quality of the shot. I dont do much beyond action/offroad anymore unless im practicing a technique that will be incorperated into an upcoming shoot.
and that also applyies to what i posted to mx428....all one can do is geuss because we have no idea if getting another angle is possible in that turn etc.
now if you want to take portraits or glamour etc, go have fun in the slam forums....thats what they are there for!!!! getting feedback is all part of the learning process.
when it comes to dirt, i will keep an eye on the incoming paychecks

Depends first on what the picture is for? Example, magazine cover would need more room up top for type and to one side for type. A vertical composition would have been best, cropped to fit that look leaving room for article type, sponsors etc. While these bikes are moving fast you must be ready for the shot. And while they go around the track more then once you have multiple chances to get your shot. And whatever you do, dont have trees and polls etc coming out of the top of any subjects head. BG pre composition is also a nice skill to have. Give your picture when you can depending on cituation, a spot for the viewers eye to focus on. Here I threw a zoom filter on and masked the eyes a little bit in ps. It was a tad dark so I put a screen layer on it also. Photoshop expertise today is a must for any photographer who wants to make money.

I know this, I have shot for magazines before. They want to use there in house staff to make any color corrections, sharpening etc themselves before it goes to print. The difference is however, if you offer them a variety of images even a variety of the same image be it ps'd and them not requesting it and its "very good", they make select one of yours over someone elses for print.

no, they wont even accept anything beyond what they ask for, very strict and have set guidlines prior to shoot on what they want. and shooting for the manufactures is the same way. and quite honestly, there is barely free time between shoots and races to even consider PS> if they want to have their staff do it fine, but in the offroad industry they dont pay enough or want anything beyond exactly what they want. its their cash so its their call.
the offroad world is a different animal. ive shot for 3 different car mags, and been requested for others that had more leeway but it seems in this genre' its one way:p

I understand :) I have another friend who used to do the same thing and would argue your manufactures comment . His photoshop talent was seen by the right person one day because he offered not only what they requested but a small gallery of his own ideas for his clients to view and consider, and today he is doing, well, I'll just say hes making alot more money then shooting for magazines alone. www.quindry.com

well, this leads us into the whole..."photoshop versus photography" issue now doesnt it? i take photographs, have them purchased and avoid ps simply because i am a photographer and not a computer graphics type guy, although i do enjoy much of what i see (and just as much that sucks)
post some more of YOUR work and not your friends, im sure we would all enjoy it.

Photography verses photoshop? Not at all, its whatever sells or sells a product that matters. Computer graphics has nothing to do with it. Being in a digital world now photography wise the "digital negative" aka the raw file, needs to be "developed" digitally in photoshop. Further enhancements or complete manipulation is another topic and just another source of revenue if one is good at it. Thats all I am trying to say. If your happy making whatever you make shooting straight pictures for magazines then thats your business. I am a firm believer of increasing my revenue through multiple avenues. As for my work, I have the majority of it on my other computer which has recently been crapping out on me. But heres some misc stuff I have on my laptop. Yes, I hope you enjoy :)

Truth be told pappy, I dont feel the need to out do anyone. As far as your comment about nobody being able to critique off road work, you havent really looked at
http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/board/47/0
Where there are quite a few very well know professional off road, mx, atv, x games, nba, nfl, mbl, nhl, surfer, nascar, you name it photographers who post there all the time to share their knowledge, get "constructive feedback" on their work all the time. But if your happy with your paychecks, so be it.
I like sharing and getting that extra "critique" to see what I may have missed or could have done differently to improve my skills for the next time.
And again, only reason I mentioned the forum to begin with was for those who may have interest in that option.
Happy shooting ;)

I got a few good shots this wk end and ALOT of not so good shots experimenting with flash  I had great results the last round in the XC sections ,but lighting was quite abit different.
Weather was crap so it was a gamble on all areas to shoot.
However, I DID have some fun shooting in the elements....
This log section I shot a few of .

Even the other photographer I talked to out and there had the same problems, so I dont feel so bad now. lol:p
Ill have to thorw up a shot and show you how bad it was :o
I did manage a few good shots in the woods, but only after changing location to a better lit spot that at least had some filtered light.
I had fun in the woods last round due to overcast made nice for no shadows.

Pappy, at 1st I thought this was dust.. but now I know its not.
Any ideas what might have caused this weird white blur in the corner? It was the only shot that was like that.

Ravage, Im no expert, but to me its just not enough light or flash exposure. You have many great shots and I too am like Pappy that likes the facial areas and the riders eyes,it just needs brightened up a bit!! :)
I suck at understanding flash and have much to learn about it.I just dont get it :(
Im hoping Harlen can show me a few helpful hints on mine next week when its not too busy at the track.
Ravage-I like 10 ,11 and 12 the best. ;)

^thats my geuss, or condensation on the lens?
mark, exposure needs work but subject and composition are pretty good. during races sometimes its hard but if your exposure is off it can make a great shot suck. the problem ive found with digital is that it lags slight behind film with regards to light range. with extreme bright/ dark shots , not sure if he was going for the the rider being highlighted by the sun or not....this is why its hard to critique anything beyond basics because if a photog is trying to achieve a certain look and doesnt state it, we can only geuss! and when motocross is on the plate, alot of variable come into play that we just dont see to be overly critical.(better angle available, less distracting background, better or more even light...and on and on)
ive been tweaking things in my camera to get it to suit the look i like. the white balance is so critical.

as for me, ive been tight cropping a ton of shots this year just because i love being sucked into the picture. i geuss i get to see and take so many normal shots that if i can capture the power of the rider in a shot it im happy

ive also started working with b&w. alot more to learn with true conversions then i thought:p

Too dark, eh.. I always have a hard time with exposure. With the XT in Manual you can't select exposure (which i'm happy with since I can't do it worth a damn !) I probably should have gone a shutter/stop slower, like the first photo.
For what I was trying to accomplish.. not sure how to say it, bright light and dark shadows if that makes sense.. like this and other shots on there..

Congrats on the publish Tina.
You take freakin awesome pictures.......I need to start showing off a bit more for you and your camera when I'm racing.........Like Timmeh. He's always showing off for the camera, and gets AWESOME results. I always look "uncomfortable" in most of the frames I'm in, that you've taken... except for those few from Riverdale. Yeah, I'm gonna show off a bit more, lol.
Speaking of you taking pictures......did you get a little worried I was going to run you over during Unclassified when I about blew that corner before we went left up the hill? You looked like you were getting ready to bolt, lol.

LOL no..not at all.... I have only got one scare this year and it was with a Rhino that got a little goofy at Payette.I was bolting all over the XC sections in fear a rider would be right around the corner. hehe!
That and I learned not to stand in a berm next to Timmeh:o :p I still have mud in my camera from that shot! lol
Timmeh is easy to shoot ,so is a few of the others like Latimar,Mitchell and Terry and Zimmerman.to me they are predictable so I know when to hit the button with them.
Thats why i liek to shoot alotof the Friday practice cause I know ther riders are out having fun and its more"relaxed" for the camera. i Love when the riders play with thr camera in Fridays too !

Something i've wondered... can you see the starbursts through the lens as you're taking the photo or do they show up after the fact?
Pappy
09-02-2007, 07:09 PM
They offer filters that create the stra burst, but i dont use them so im not sure if they show or not. i dont see them but with certain lenses i know what to expect, getting them where you want them just comes with expierence
That's where some of the art of photography comes into play:)

so far what i've read has me excited, along with nikons new fx format. i will atleast pick up one or two, either the d300 or d3 but for the majority of my shooting the d200 is working fine and unless i have to repleace them, i may wait one more season.

I notice the tunnel in the back ground, did that turn out to be a good spot overall...or just the one pic? What about the big step-up I mentioned(if it's the same setup)...how did that work picwise?

I tried to shoot from there, but thelighting was not right each time I was there. I also didnt have the right lense to capture the real effect the jump was so I ended up at the tabel top alot and a few of the berms.
Troy on th other hand was all over the place with the camcorder and got some sick video coverage .

How do you guys/gals clean you camera?
I am using an XTI and it gets assaulted with dust, I want it to last a long time/picture quality to be good.
Right now i am using a microfiber cloth to wibe down the outside and a cleaner solution(supplied by Henry's) to clean lenses and screens.
But how do you clean the sensor and so? I have been noticing dust spots on some of my pictures and want to get rid of them / the dust sitting on the sensor.
Thanks

I know I'm cheap when It comes to cameras but I only take about 50-100 a year...so i don't need anything spectacular.

nah not at all. 500 isnt cheap. .well atleast to me it isnt. if u only take that much and dont want to actually get into photography. then get a good point and shoot. such as a canon power shot.

I was really nervous at 1st using it, but I cant see paying a shop to clean my camera when I can do it myself.
I am however going to send mine off to be serviced( I bought an ext. warrenty and free cleanings) once the WORCs series is over.

You use the pec pads and the eclipse .
This is what you will want, but I bought the mega kit as all the stuff comes in handy .You can buy prewrapped PecPads too(some prefer those) but its not hard to do yourself. The Sensor is small somewhat small on the Rebel Vs. other cameras, so its a little tough getting a good swipe, but it nothing major hard about it.

Pappy
09-12-2007, 09:00 PM
Please dont take this wrong, but I dont really deal with anything below pro or semi professional level cameras so I really cant say what is the best etc. I dont even read about anything below what I use:p i just dont have the time!
The rebel from canon, the d40 or d50 from nikon all work great and can get images that you can LEARN to take! there are a few others on the market that ive heard do awesome, but you need to ask yourself what you intend to do with the camera!
I just got a new lightmeter, my other one was almost 20 years old. Old unit cost me like $130 , this one was over $500! i never would spend that if i didnt think i could get better and learn how its newer features can help me better at photography! the same should apply to a camera!

wider angle lenses produce more flare, and when aimed towards a light (sun, flash unit, street lights) the flare will do its thing. what you have to watch for is lens flare (colored spots) from the light entering the lens.
or you can buy a star burst filter, they are sold in respect to how many points they give of a light source.
QuadJunkies

check out ebay and the big photo sale sites, most offer a generic version ofthe factory battery. I bought 10 for my camera for what 4 of the nikon units would have cost and they seem to be working as well as the oem units.
eric, now you know why most of us are hosting the pics, resizing such large files to fit on the site SUCKS!

a lot of your shots (like this one) look artificially lighted, which IMO takes away from the photo. the pics are in the woods but it looks like the bike was photoshoped in from a shoot in a studio...?
Pappy
10-06-2007, 09:27 PM
i do not use photoshop, dont even have it on my computer nor do i know how to use it:p and yes, its in the woods, would you prefer it be dark like every other photographer takes them., with the riders face black. I prefer a properly exposed pictures and will employ lighting techniques to achieve it.

I prefer a properly exposed pictures and will employ lighting techniques to achieve it.

I too buy all my batteries off Ebay sites that work just as well..
Im now looking for some good rechargeable AA Batteries that will work well for cold weather use for my flash . I have some, but they dont hold a charge as well as the lithiums do.

Ok, I will show you why I do what I do, and its because I want my picture to look this way.
here is a shot that most photographers will take during a race. It is properly exposed for the ambient light with no detial in the riders face. Its not a bad picture, but it is to me (I took it) This is the same shot people have been happy to hand over $20 bucks for at tracks all over the country.

Now, here is the way I want it to look. Much better detail, shadows add depth. Rider and atv are jumping out at you. And it was done in the camera during a race with techniques that i use with flash units and adjusting the camera(manual mode only for me)

Photography is subjective, and it is about what I want to show over what you want to see or even like. I do know that people are flipping out over them simply because most can't get good shots of themselves in actual race enviroments in the woods!
