i have 2 nikon sb-800's and 1 sb-600

the 600 works great for 2 or 3 flash set ups because it wont go into stand by mode like 800's when im doing a remote flash shoot

I doubt I will be racing any this year. I am going to try to do some riding, but just get myself ready for next years riding.

Thanks for asking, I appreciate that.

That is definitly one thing I want to start getting into. More studio type photography. Mainly with parts, and bikes, but some people photography would be OK too.

I also just shot my first wedding on April 1st......talk about an expierence. It was for my girlfriends sister, and I told her I only shot sports before, but what I got came out pretty good I think.

Im doing my 1st wedding this wk end and Im a total bag of nerves!
Thats such an important day, I sooo dont want ot screw it up.

She keeps telling me"Your gonna do just fine".I guess shes got more confidense in me than I do!:p

Well, I think this wk end had to be one of my best wk end of shooting. I got ALOT more than just a few great shots- I got ALOT!:blah: this would be the 1st time I have shot in cloudy conditions and I got the lighting right. I jused my Historygram alot more this time and it paid off I think :) Several will be used in the WORCs race Coverage Im working on.

Heres a few shots from the hot dry, dusty days to the overcast ones at WORCS in Idaho last wk end.

QJ...stop down a stop or two so the riders head is more in focus with the back lit shots(or aim at the handlebars....focus extends in-front and behind the point of focus). I like the last pic, as the lighting is uniform across the picture (no blown out highlights) Start looking for the best lighting and learn to meter it...results are there just waiting for you.

The wedding I done yesterday went horrible :( Trying to get everyone to lok at the camera at the same time and not look away or blink was HARD!! lol
The smaller lense I have just proved that its total junk. Its def. slow like my old Tele. lense is :ermm: . Ill have to invest in a better potrait lense next time around.
All my pics are very grainy as well. They remind me alot of the indoor FT pics . I also used my flash alot and had some good and not so good results.I am lucky because the wedding is of a friend of mine so she was aware of my set up :p Im glad to have got the chance to see what Im up against and what is needed for the next one .

i got in a nikon 300 2.8 vr last week and used it for the first time at this weekends gncc race in sc.

its heavy, and will take some getting used to and may even require me to use a mono pod (something else to get used to)

it worked well, but requires alot of thought prioir to picking a position as being 300mm fixed (480mm with my d200 body) it offers no second chances if you miss your mark.

color and clarity are unreal as with most of my nikons

Pappy one question, have you gone to school for your photography? I'm currently looking to take some classes at the local collage and I'm just wondering if it would help me even more than what I'm ready and studing from what I see here and other sites.

I still don't have a flash, so some of my pictures don't look that great. I'm mainly working on Manual mode right now. I'm still trying to find the "sweet spot" on my lenses.

I'm also working on the "Rule of Thirds" Talk about some stuff to remember while shooting.

Anyway here's what I have done so far.

This rider helps me out a lot, I just tell him I want to practice shooting and he's always there to go for a ride.

I went to school back in the early 90's, but digital was but a dream. however, the basics are the same wether it be digital or 35mm, and far to many buy a digital slr and think they are a pro...lol

You can learn all you need by reading afew books on basic photography skills. Once you have them down you can progress into other areas.(a local course would be very beneficial!)

With photography, it is an art and if you like the picture then thats all you need to worry about. Its when you are shooting for someone else that you need to worry with meeting "their " criteria. just like the rule of thirds...there really is no rules:p

I shot saturday with no flash at all, and i still got plenty of shots that showed the riders eyes which is a self imposed "must have" for me. and as for the rule of thirds....you will learn alot of techniques and set ups that make an image.

Pappy
04-16-2007, 12:34 PM
and im not sure what other sites about photography your viewing, but one thing you should notice is the open critique sections. allowing others to judge your work is a good thing. it drives me nuts when someone posts pictures that are crap and 10 people reply that they are awesome pics! you dont get better by thinking what you have is good or great unless it is!

if you do take a course (and i hope you do, you have a good start on what you WANT out of a picture) you will see a new world open up to your photography!

My biggest problem I see right now is the exposure. I'm struggling to find the correct setting right now so I don't get those black shadows like you see in my pictures.

I don't know if it is the AZ sun and environment that making it harder for me, but I'm just trying to work with all my settings right now.

It seems as though my picture colors are off just a bit. I don't know if this is due to me trying to Pan or not properly choosing the correct setting.

Thanks for the advice, I'll have to go out and buy more books and take a class.

from the angle of the shadows, it appears your shooting when the sun is high in the sky. shooting later or earlier is usually best for pictures outdoors especially with no flash to boost the dark areas.

Ok I see what you mean.

Yeah in AZ the sun is almost always right above and I tried to keep it behind me when I take pictures.

Here are a few from what you wre talking about.

Oh and almost everyone here wears shaded goggles because of the bright sun.

After looking around for the last couple of months, and trying to decide on which camera was right for me, I finally broke down and bought one. Went down to the local camera shop and bought a Nikon D80 body kit. I already bought a Sigma 18-200 lens to start with, and put a Hoya clear protective filter on it.

Now I just need to read the massive booklet that came with it, and learn how to use th camera. So as I am learning, you all can expect lots of photos for critiquing.

The sun seemded to be direct the entire wk end and in the wrong direction , so it was a little tougher to get some good lighting I was looking for.The typical time I would have the best light, it was foggy out . lol

I got it about a week ago and have been playing around with it a lot lately. I loveeeeee it, and will soon have some good motocross pics once I get out to the track. My dad is taking it to the high Sierra's this weekend so I'm sure he will get some really nice scenic shots.

A lot of prep work!......It definitely is not easy covering a baja race.

To cover this event since the race is a SINGLE 500 mile loop you basically have do what ever you can to shoot the competitors and race ahead of them again. I think we put in nearly 300 miles of seat time in ourselves with close 75 miles being totally off-road on the race course. I have maps, course notes and GPS to keep us on track. Plus a couple of radios linked with the teams and SCORE so we can figure out where the racers are at and how fast we have to go to beat them to the next setup......Not to mention we do film and photography. It is usually a two or three day ordeal after about a month of planning with friends to make it happen.

If you think the 500 is big, in November is the baja 1000. Right now the talk is 1400+ miles in a line, no loop, down to Cabo San Lucas...... a tough race to cover if we do it, and they have about 60 hours to complete that course!:eek2:

Pappy
07-11-2007, 08:39 PM

Pappy,

What is your opinion of the D40/D40x?

Merriman
07-14-2007, 10:05 AM
what are your thoughts on the Pelican case? I have been thinking about getting a hard case for my gear since I am always off-road and my camera backpack is just strapped into the bed of the Rhino. I need something that is absolutely dust proof but has easy access too.

Pappy
07-14-2007, 12:04 PM
Eric, so far Cody's D40x is doing great. He isnt a great photograper yet but he is learning super fast and the camera is simple to use and allows for further growth as his knowledge develops etc. It smaller in size then other digital slr's, but i wouldnt think twice about carrying it around for its light weight and performance.

The Pelican is saweeeeett! It has a rubber lip seal to keep water out so dust cant get in either(until you open it in a dusty area etc) Its tuff as nails polycarbonate construction should hold up well, and lugging it is easy do to the wheels and carrying handle etc. They make a few sizes, i got the large so my gear could all fit into one unit when I travel. I still have 2 other bags for flash units and remote slaves, and then a Tamarac Expidition 7 backpack for when its needed. I will probably pick up a smaller Pelican for my flash units because i think so much of the unit.

here is a shot from Cody using his d40x

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1419/562103416_d8cb8b2fac_o.jpg

I only snapped a few shots with the new 50mm 1.4 but id say its plenty sharp:p

Is this a decent close up lens? Im looking for a wide angle for corner shots/jumps/etc and I came across this. At 500 bucks it's in my price range.

What I've found out is that a lot of time its easier to pre-focus when shooting at close range....... Ive shot some trophy trucks at less than 5 feet way, and the only way for them to come out is pre-focused and just gauge the action to fit inside the view finder....
