ATVriders.com: You’ve been riding and racing the with a Can-Am since the Commander was first released. What’s the biggest different between all of the other years and this year that made it work for you?
Kyle Chaney: I bought my first Can-Am Commander and broke in my first race at Georgia, and I came back and took a podium in South Carolina on a totally stock Commander and that got Can-Am looking at me and then the next race I won in Indiana at the Indy 100. After that, they wanted me to race for Warnert, and I was able to end up on the podium there, and we had one round to go in Indiana and I ended up breaking.

A couple years after that, they did some team switching, and I just think they switched the team up too much. It takes more than a season to get everything good to go and get the bugs worked out. Last year we raced with JB and we worked a lot of stuff out, and that was his first year and this year they seemed to have gotten everything worked out really well.

Kyle Chaney celebrates the win at the 2013 John Penton GNCC with JB Off-Road |
There’s a learning curve and I knew throughout the years what it took to keep the buggy going and what to tell my mechanics what needed to be changed. It’s just hard to get extra money for extra stuff. This year Can-Am gave me my own team with my own stuff, Chaney Racing, and I knew what it took to win. I put a lot of my own money into it and I didn’t have a lot of sponsors, but at the end of the day, that’s what it took was the extra money and we got the win.

Kyle Chaney has progressed through out the years with Can-Am and is now racing under his own banner in a Chaney Racing Can-Am Maverick |
ATVriders.com: The Can-Am definitely seems to be gaining a lot of ground on the Polaris and the GNCC season finale had a Can-Am Sweep on the podium, which use to be dominated by the RZR?
Kyle Chaney: Polaris’ have been out for a long time and the Can-Am’s are newer to the SxS racing scene, so they have finally got them to where they are an awesome machine and are taking over the UTV market. You barely have to do anything to them. I race on a stock motor and a lot of other stock parts. You could race my buggy in the XC2 class if it wasn’t for the shocks. You could go to the showroom floor and buy the same thing pretty much besides the harness’s and tie rods and you’d be ready to race. The machine is awesome, and they’ve came a long way!
