Interview:
Harold Goodman- 2007 ATVA Extreme
Dirt Track Pro Champion
Harold
Goodman shaved Rage ATV's Dee Manshack's
head after winning the championship
as part of a bet
As
you said, you switched to Rage ATV this year.
They’ve been out here supporting you and
this seems like a big win for them as well.
Yes, it is. He got the WPSA title with John
Natalie and now the Pro and the Pro-Am ATV Championship
in Extreme Dirt Track. It’s been a phenomenal
season for them. It’s also great for me
and John to get out there and win. The motors
were fast and reliable, it was great!
A lot of people probably
don’t realize how long you’ve
been involved in racing and that you race
everything from cross-country to MX to TT.
Can you tell us a little about your past highlights
over your career?
There’s been a lot that are important
to me. My first championship on a 60 is probably
as important to me as winning this one. A
little later in my career, my first pro win
which was my first pro race in Montreal in
1995. I got to race against Gary Denton, one
of he fastest ATV racers ever. I was 16 or
17 years old at the time and I actually got
to pass him so that was really exciting! In
1995 I won the Randy Howard Memorial award,
which was probably the highlight of my amateur
and youth career.
"Bumble
Bee" Harold Goodman acquired his
nickname from when he was racing among
the youth ranks, and Jerry Smith told
him to shift when his mini sounded like
a “Bee”, and Harold has
been known as the “Bumble Bee”
ever since
You not only raced
in the U.S. but you’ve also raced internationally
in Montreal, you’ve done the Pont De
Vaux, the Paris Supercross, and you are the
reigning champion in New Zealand. How has
that been for you?
I’ve raced Pont de Vaux about 8 times,
and we went to Paris Supercross, that was
a great event. It’s really awesome to
have the opportunity to go and do all of these
events and go to different countries. You
get to meet different people, see different
things, and get to do the sport you love,
it’s awesome. I’ll also be going
down to Baja to do the Baja 1000 soon for
the 5th time…it’s great!
In
1998, the powerhouse team of Harold
Goodman, Shane Hitt, and Tim Farr won
the 12 Hours of Pont de Vaux with the
support of Baldwin Motorsports &
PEP Suspension
You got to start out
this year down in Argentina. What was that
like?
That was a great event. There was something
like 400 quad entries, some ridiculous number
like that. I think I finished 17th or 18th
but I had a great time. It was a different
country, a really different way of life down
there, but I’m glad I got to see it.
It was really a neat event and I would like
to go do it again.
Harold
Goodman has traveled the World pursuing
his passion of racing ATVs with his
adventures taking him to Argentina,
France, Mexico, and New Zealand just
to name a few in the past year, and
he is currently the reigning New Zealand
Champion
All of your racing
is done this year except for the Baja. What
it’s like down there and who are you
racing with this year?
I’m racing with Keith Little, Wes Miller,
Wayne Matlock, and someone else. We’re
going to be riding a Honda 450r. What’s
neat about that race is you get to go down
there and pre-run it and practice the section
you’re going to ride so you can really
get a handle on the 180-200 miles of course
that you will be racing on and that’s
the only way to really go fast and be safe
down there and get a good understanding of
it. The Baja is one of those things where
it sounds like a good idea and like a lot
of fun, but when you’re out there actually
racing it, it seems like it kind of sucks.
It’s a rough race and it will wear you
out, but it’s fun.
Besides the Baja 1000,
what other plans do you have for racing this
winter?
As of right now, that’s the only event
that I’m really committed to right now.
I’m just planning on getting started
training real soon for next season and doing
Baja, which will give me a little time off
from training. Then I’ll get home and
just start getting ready for next season.
I might go down to Texas after Christmas to
do some riding, and just kind of stay down
there until the beginning of the season.
Will your race program
stay pretty much the same or will there be
some changes?
We actually haven’t committed to anything
yet for next season. I really liked my program
for this year; it was a terrific season. We
had both the TT and the MX bikes dialed in
and I really liked working with the people
I worked with this year.
Harold
Goodman instructed several Extreme Dirt
Track riding schools in 2007, and he
plans on doing it again in 2008, so
keep an eye on the homepage for future
schools
You just finished
up doing a couple of riding schools; do you
plan on doing any more schools?
I’d actually like to get started earlier
in the year next year and get some TT riding
schools in. There’s a lot of demand
for it and I get a lot of people asking me
about it. I’m really hoping to get a
venue to go to in March and April to get a
few schools in.
Congratulations
again on your championship, we wish you all
the best for the 2008 season!
Thank you!
