Last year, Suzuki’s
Dustin Wimmer was in the running for a championship
in the WPSA series, and missing it by only
a few points. Wimmer’s hunger for a
championship has fueled his determination
this year and has already landed him his first
win of the season at the Pro only, round 1
of the AMA ATV MX Nationals at Glen Helen.
Despite
stiff competition from the likes of current
two-time AMA ATV Motocross champ, Joe Byrd
and 2007 WPSA champion, John Natalie, Wimmer
made it look easy as he walked away with an
impressive 1-1 victory that earned him the
top spot on the podium. We were able to sit
down with Dustin after the races and talk
to him about his win and what his plans are
for the season. Here’s what he had to
say:
During qualifiers Chad Weinen
actually had the fastest lap times, but you
ended up taking the win in both motos; that
has to feel pretty good!
Yes, it does. Chad definitely had some good
laps in the qualifiers, but I didn’t
think about it too much. I went out there
and ran my own race. I got decent holeshots,
the top 3 in both motos. I just tried to get
around Byrd and Creamer both times and just
put some distance between myself and the rest
of the field so I could settle down a bit.

Wimmer starts out 2008 ATV Motocross
season with a Win for Suzuki |
It
was really incredible to see the level of
talent out there and to see you just check
out on the rest of the field.
You have to step it up at race time. You don’t
always have to show them what you got in qualifying,
but when it comes to race time, you definitely
have to give it all you’ve got.
What
have you been doing over the winter to prepare
for this season?
I’ve been down training with Doc from
TST a little bit and been out here in California
riding a lot and doing some testing. I’m
just trying to get on the bike and get some
seat time on it and do some cross training
as well.
The
Suzuki team has some new mechanics on board
this year. How is it working with your new
mechanic?
Glenn is working great. He’s been a
mechanic for years so I feel comfortable with
him. It looks like this will be a good season
for me, him and the whole team.

Wimmer's new Mechanic Glen Schlade kept
busy all day Sunday going over Wimmer's
Suzuki LT-R450, but it paid off with
the Wimmer going 1-1 for the win, and
Glen was awarded Mechanic of the Race
at the AMA ATV Motocross Opener at Glen
Helen

How’s
your Suzuki working for you? Have you made
any changes to it this year?
We’ve made a couple of changes. Probably
the biggest change is the a-arms and swing
arm to JB Racing.
Is
the team going to be at the next round of
Nationals in Alabama or will you be waiting
until the start of the WPSA?
I know we are doing the first three rounds
then who knows after that.
If
you dominate like you did today in the first
three races will it be kind of hard for you
to step away to go to WPSA?
Absolutely! If I’m on top of the podium
at the next race in Alabama and I’m
leading in points, then you might see me at
all the races.
Does
it make it hard for you and other racers when
you are racing two series’ instead of
being able to focus on one?
It gets hard when you have to go to the series
by yourself. I did it for many years, but
I’m not set up right now to do that.
I’m sure Suzuki would make it happen
for me. They would help me out with whatever
I need…it might happen.
You
did that at Unadilla last year. You showed
up with your quad in the back of your truck,
and you ended up winning the race. You definitely
proved that you don’t need all the support
to win, but having the full field out here
this weekend, must have been pretty awesome
for you.
Absolutely. Relaxing and having the team here,
and the truck, and not having to worry about
working on the bike and just riding…
it’s what they’re here for.
With
all of the factory involvement that has come
about this year and the money involved; is
there a lot of pressure on you to win?
Yeah, it’s crazy how all these manufacturers
are coming in with rigs and really stepping
it up. It’s looking good! It’s
just better for us riders that all these manufacturers
are coming in.
You
did a great job out there today, Dustin! Congratulations
on your win and good luck in the next round
in Alabama.
Thank you!
