Yamaha
YFZ 450 SE |
The YFZ450 also only received minor updates for 2007 with
a new front master cylinder and drilled rear brake rotor
just like the Raptor 700, but it also received new racer
Pro Taper aluminum handlebars that are light weight and
much more comfortable than the standard steel handlebars
we have become accustomed to replacing shortly after bringing
home our ATVs. The YFZ450 also received a new internal
oil jet aimed at the bottom of the piston to help prolong
the life of the piston by reducing heat and wear. Also,
internally, the clutch system was updated for added strength
and consistent operation.

The Special Edition YFZ450 also received the additional
adjustability of high and low speed compression adjustment

red carbon flames and the all new black with red carbon

2006
Yamaha / ITP Quadcross Champion, Dustin Nelson,
brought out his YFZ450 to join us for some riding
on the sand dunes |
After learning about all the new features of each model,
it was finally time to hit the sand dunes, which is an
experience every ATV enthusiast should put on their “To
Do List” because it is ultimate play ground. Of
all the sand dunes, Glamis has gained the most recognition
because of the huge crowds that flock to the dunes during
the winter holidays, and after riding there for just two
days, it was very easy to understand why with miles of
sand and some huge sand dunes that can be extremely challenging
to even the most experienced riders, but the YFZ450 and
Raptor 700 were right at home on the dunes in stock form
without any need for paddle tires.
The YFZ450 had plenty of hit with its highly responsive
449cc liquid cooled powerplant, and it had ample power
to climb the big sand hills as long as you stayed on
the gas, and it was hands down the funniest to launch
over some of the huge sand walls with ease and confidence
that it could absorb the landing, but after several
hours of riding, the YFZ450 would begin to wear you
out in the sand with its stiff thumb throttle and aggressive
power.
On the other hand, the Raptor 700 was my machine of
choice with its easy to push thumb throttle thanks to
its EFI, which really shines after hours of riding because
there is little to no thumb fatigue. Also, the Raptor
700 is a torque monster, which is perfect for the sand
with the never ending hill climbs. I have ridden plenty
of ATVs over the years, and the Raptor 700 is one my
favorite because it such a versatile machine that has
proven itself to me to be perfect for all riding conditions
from trails, tracks, and now sand dunes.
Both the YFZ450 and Raptor 700 in stock form are great
machines, but the all new Special Editions are great
buys and especially the Raptor 700 with its major suspension
upgrade, which was the icing on the cake for this model
as it is truly the best in its class.
