For
2009, Dustin Nelson will race the YFZ450R
with the same GYTR components that are
available for the public |
The stock YFZ450R has plenty of power for tail
riding, and it also shined on the motocross
track as it effortlessly climbed the whooped
out big hill climbs on the track. Also, there
was plenty of power for accelerating out of
a turn and over some jumps on the track, but
the GYTR hop-ups really woke up the YFZ450R.
Even with the smaller motocross tires, the YFZ450R
really came to life with increased low end power
for instant throttle response, and the power
was smooth and consistent through out the power
curve. “The GYTR YFZ450R has great power,
and it is extremely controllable, so I could
stay on the power without it wanting to wheelie
out of control, which is really important for
racing in the GNCC series through the trees,”
said Jarrod.

Jarrod
McClure quickly adjusted to the GYTR equipped
YFZ450R, and he was impresed with the
increase in performance and handling of
the GYTR equipped unit |
The stock suspension was able to soak up even
the roughest landings and allowed us to hammer
through the whoops. Jarrod even cased the uphill
triple on his first attempt, which was a 5th
gear nearly wide open hit to clear the top,
and the suspension sucked up the impact without
any significant rebound kick. YFZ450R suspension
was set at the factory settings, which worked
great on the motocross track, but with a full
range of adjustability, we could have easily
dialed in the suspension even more as we did
on day one while trail riding.

Yamaha
long travel suspension really shined in
the whoops section as Jarrod was able
to stay on the gas and allow the suspension
to do it works absorbing the impacts as
the YFZ450R tracked forward without any
rear end swap or handling issues |
After two days of riding this machine in two
very different types of environments, we feel
that the YFZ450R is an all around excellent
ATV that would be well suited for just about
any type of riding, but where it truly shines
and seems to be most at home, is the motocross
track. In stock form, the YFZ450R is more than
adequate for the average rider who wants performance,
but does not have a big budget for modifications,
and with the addition GYTR components, the YFZ450R
can be a very competitive machine on the track.
