Racing's Robbie Mitchell grabbed the Holeshot
and pulled an 18.6 second lead before having
to pit and change a flat tire, which had
him wishing he had Tireballs |
Robbie Mitchell ended up with the $100 ATVRiders.com
holeshot award and was leading until the jagged
rocks took their toll and he had to pit to fix
a flat tire. As Mitchell pulled into the pits
it gave Temecula Motorsports’ John Shaffe
the opportunity he was looking for to take the
lead. “I had passed Brandon Brown and was
closing in on a 13 second lead that Mitchell had
on me when he got a flat tire and had to pit.”
Stated Shaffe. John credits the tire balls he
was using for giving him a little bit of an edge
over some of the other racers. “I was running
tire balls and that really gave me an advantage
through the rock sections. Other guys were slowing
down when they got to the rocks and I was able
to keep a pretty steady pace and not worry about
getting a flat.”

Mitchell put in his best race of the season,
but unfortunately for him a penalty in the
pits costed him a spot on the Podium

Shafe was on a mission as he felt the pressure
from teammate Levi Marana running in the
second spot |
After his tire change, Mitchell didn’t
waste anytime catching back up, swapping back
and forth for 3rd place several times with Brandon
Brown. “Mitchell and I kept going back and
forth.” Said Brandon. “It was a really
good race between us.” Mitchell eventually
pulled away from Brown and began to chase down
2nd place Levi Marana. Marana seemed to be keeping
the same pace as teammate Shaffe with almost identical
lap times through the last half of the race.

At the end of the race, it was Shaffe who crossed
the finish line first, 20 seconds ahead of second
place teammate Marana, and Robbie Mitchell came
across the line in third. Unfortunately for Mitchell,
a 2-minute penalty incurred in the pits would
keep him from the podium. Apparently, one of his
crew assisted Mitchell just a few inches outside
of his designated pit area, causing the infraction,
which cost Mitchell several positions and landed
Brandon Brown the 3rd place podium.

Shafe was on "Cloud 9" after winning
his first Pro WORCS Race |
WORCS Round 9 will be held October 20-21, once
again at Pismo Beach. This course offers special
challenges to riders since they are not allowed
to use paddle tires in the sand and the track
has a tendency to develop deep whoops throughout
the whole course. “Last year they had the
pro’s race for two hours. The track was
all whoops and it really wore you down. It took
me a week before I could walk after that one!”
Exclaimed Shaffe.
With more than a month between round 8 and round
9, racers should have plenty of time to heal,
make repairs, and prepare for the next to last
race of this series where Josh Frederick still
holds a big 55 point lead over Can-Am teammate
Jeremy Schell and a 56 point lead over reigning
champion, Doug Eichner.
