Race Results
Taft, CA - WORCS ATV Racers set another record for round two at Honolulu Hills Raceway in Taft, CA with 480 entries! The event attracted several riders from over seas in England, and even GNCC Pro Racer, Andy Lagzdins, decided to give WORCS racing a try while he was on vacation in California, so Duncan Racing outfitted Lagzdins with a Honda 450R for the event.

The opening round of series at Speedworld provided plenty of excitement with Eichner wrecking early in the race and charging back to finish only five seconds behind Josh Frederick followed by Logan Holladay. Last year, bad luck struck for Frederick’s at the Honolulu Hills, which allowed Eichner to walk away with the win.

The Honolulu Hills track remained very similar to the course last year except for the addition of a few jumps and the addition of huge table top, which was a challenge for even the top pros to clear. The off-roads sections contained some high speed pavement sections along with some rugged terrain with some impressive hill climbs thrown into the mix.

#15 Logan Holladay grabs the Hiper Wheel Holeshot Award
The Pro Main had 24 riders signed up, which was the most since last year at Lake Havasu, AZ. With a completely full gate and a beautiful day for racing, the start of the pro race was set to begin. With the drop of the gate, it would be Logan Holladay earning the Hiper Wheels Holeshot Award with Doug Eichner hot on his heels followed by Josh Frederick. Heading into the off-road section, Eichner made the pass on Holladay and took over the lead. Eichner’s lead was short lived as he got a flat tire and headed for the pits for a tire change, which allowed Holladay to recapture the lead followed by Josh Frederick.

As the race continued, Josh would make his move on Holladay and held the lead for the first time in the race. Doug Eichner was charging from behind and he was able to make up valuable time with Josh headed into the pits for gas. Eichner would make the pass on Holladay followed by Frederick to regain the lead.

Doug Eichner was on a mission, but a counter sprocket would cost him the win
Andy Lagzdins would finish out his first WORCS race with a 5th place finish

Unfortunately for Doug Eichner, he wasn’t able to build enough of a cushion between him and Frederick before he headed to the pits for his final splash of gas, which allowed Frederick the easy pass to regain the lead.

By the final lap of the race, Doug Eichner caught back up to Josh Frederick in the lead and made the pass yet again in the off-road section of the course to regain the lead, and it appeared he would have smooth sailing until the checkered flag when disaster struck. With the finish line in his sights, Eichner’s counter sprocket would fly off his Honda leaving him sitting on the track in disbelief. Josh Frederick was cruise past Eichner for his second win of the year after one of the most dramatic races to the finish in recent WORCS history. Eichner’s only alternative was to push his Honda as fast as he could across the finish line without any assistants before Holladay was able to make the pass on the five time champion. With the crowd screaming and clamping, Eichner was able to cross the finish line ahead of Holladay to secure the second spot with the rookie Logan Holladay once again earning himself a spot on the podium. The GNCC Pro Racer, Andy Lagzdins, would finish out the race on the lead lap in 5th place behind Brandon Brown.

Amateur Race Coverage
The riders from England borrowed Kory Ellis’ 2005 back up YFZ for the race. The English racers brought home a couple trophies with Duncan Irons taking 3rd in Open A and John Elliot taking 1st in Master 50, with Rick Shafe from from Marana, Az taking 2nd. In more news with the “Old Guy” class Racer Steve Shannon had lost his rear brake caliper on the third lap, and he kept on racing to a 3rd place finish in the Master 50 class. If that wasn’t bad enough Steve had points on the line in 40 B, so he raced again on Sunday and finished 5th, which was enough to make him the points leader. Finishing out the 40 B class was Aaron Wentz in 4th, Rudd Miller in 3rd, Rick Shafe in 2nd, and Scott Melville taking the win.

The minis were out in numbers as 31 came to the line, these kids battled from the second they left the line. In the 71-90cc Mod Class it was Cole Fite, Taylor Guy, and Casey Donahue battling out in front of the pack. Cole then opened up a huge lead and got the win for round 2 followed by Taylor in 2nd and Casey in 3rd. For the 51-70cc class the top finishers were Cody Engelhart in 3rd, Nathan Wilson in 2nd, and Nick Klein for the win.

In the Women’s A class we saw only two riders as Brittany Brosious grabbed the holeshot, but her lead didn’t last long as Lynn Prosser made the pass and got the win for round 2 putting her currently in lead for points. Tia Chandler from Reno, NV who ran Women’s A in Round 1 bumped down to Women’s B/C. It was a race for the Holeshot between Kalyce May and Christy McGruffin, but Christy grabbed it and the win followed by Danielle Corbin in 2nd and Tia Chandler in 3rd.

Next up is Lake Havasu March 10-12 at Crazyhorse Campgrounds and with Spring Break in full effect this is always a popular round. The WORCS Crew will be adding a side-by-side class for the Saturday evening event. So if you have a Rhino or Mule bring them on out, you must have a four point harness on yourself and your passenger. Also helmets, gloves and goggles will be required. Sean Reddish had mentioned depending on the turnout this may be a permanent class to the ATV Event.
