Surprise, AZ - Round one of the
2009 WORCS ATV Racing Series saw some stiff competition
in the Pro ATV ranks with some eager fresh faces
and some determined familiar ones, but Can-Am Motoworks
racer Josh Frederick came on strong to take his
first win of the season, in hopes of claiming a
third straight championship.
The season opener was held once again at SpeedWorld
MX in Phoenix, AZ where racers were treated to
beautiful weather and dry conditions. The track
set up featured plenty of desert trails, a pretty
decent motocross section and an abundance of log
and tire obstacles in the endurocross area. While
the track started out smooth, and fast, the sandy
washouts soon became whooped out and somewhat
rough as is typical in the desert southwest.

The competition at WORCS has been steadily increasing
over the past couple of years, and this year it
seems to have taken a giant leap forward over
the short winter break. In addition to the increased
competition among riders, changes have been made
to the Pro ATV class for the 2009 season that
could also make a difference. In previous years,
the Pro main event was an hour and thirty minutes
in length, but this year, WORCS officials added
30 minutes to that time to increase it to two
hours long, which could mean more fatigue for
some riders and additional pit stops.

Motoworks
/ Can-Am's Josh Frederick grabbed the Holeshot
by edging out Polaris' Doug Eichner as the
pair bumped wheels |
Despite the changes and competition, Josh Frederick
still managed to stay ahead of the pack. Josh
grabbed the holeshot in the Pro ATV class, but
dropped back to second when he and veteran WORCS
racer Doug Eichner came together coming out of
turn one.
