Matthieu Ternynck had a rought first Moto
with a 15th place finish, but he rebounded
to finish 4th in the last 2 Motos |
The same was true for countryman Matthieu Ternynck.
“Again, I had a bad start. But, I was able
to fight my way back to fourth place.” Ternynck
and Couprie slipped before Holmes in that last round.
“In the last round, Romain and I came together
and me stalling the engine got stuck in the ruts.
I ended up getting fifth place, which is still good
for the points” said Paul Holmes after his
second moto. With only an hour and half between the
second and third moto. Riders and mechanics had
to work hard and fast to prepare themselves and
the bike for the final race. This time, the Holeshot
was for Romain Couprie on his YFZ450R. Couprie controlled
the entire race. Leading from start to finish, with
only Vlaeymans that could threaten him the first
few rounds. Both riders secured their own place
and rode the race out.

Defending champion, Paul Holmes secured
top 5 finishes in the first 2 motos, but
suspension issues dropped him back to 7th
in Moto 3 for a 4th Overall finish |
A good start from Paul Holmes gave him the third
place. “ I had third place with the start,
but my rear suspension troubled me. This meant I
dropped back into the pack.”Due to his suspension
issues, Paul had to fight hard for every single
place. He dropped from third to seventh place.
Joe Maessen suffered from oil problems the last
race. “The bike was losing a lot of oil and
I was unsure that I could finish the race at all.”
Maessen kept attacking and ended up fifth place.
Matthieu Ternynck could work his way up to fourth
place again. “I had a great fight with Jason
Macbeth, Paul Holmes and Joe Maessen. Jason got
away, and I got secure my fourth place.” Mike
Van Grinsven, only 16 years old, obtained eight
place. The current leader in the Dutch Open Championship
was present all weekend. In the final ranking he
had a top 10 place in his first European Championship.
Former European Champion Romain Couprie took the
overall win and points lead as chases are the championship
for 2010. Current European Champion, Paul Holmes
was less fortunate. Troubled with little technical
difficulties in the third moto, he ended up at fourth
place. Eighteen points behind Couprie. Vice-Champion
Joe Maessen is also in pursuit, with a seventh place
in the overall. “I had some issues with the
set up of the bike. But also it wasn’t my
day today. I normally do better on tracks like this
one”.
Nothing has been lost, but a lot has been shown
this weekend. The massive crowd were witness of
amazing first round. Even when times are financially
tough, all the top European racers were in attendance,
which made for an exciting first round of the UEM
EMX European Championship by Goldspeed.

Next stop is already in two weeks. Then the United
Kingdom is the host of the Championship in Langrish.
An entirely different track than Oldebroek. So,
it looks once again to be a great race weekend.
