Felipe
Velez's 5a team took over the lead in the
mountains, but it would be short lived when
they experienced quad issues |
By 100 miles into the race 5a Mexican Team would
take over the lead in the mountains on their Honda
TRX 450R with the 1a of Harold Goodman close behind,
but soon after taking over the lead, the 5a Team
began to experience engine issues, which allowed
the 1a to regain the lead, and by the time Josh
Caster took back over the 1a for the San Felipe
loop at 240 mile mark, the 4a Greg Row’s Team
quad was 30 minutes back with the 5a & 6a right
behind as they were all within seconds of each other.
Amazingly, the Class 24 104a team of Tom Wright
was only 17 minutes behind the 1a Matlock Racing
Team and were running 2nd Overall among the ATV
teams, but unfortunately, their domination would
soon end when they blew their rear shock and rear
tire off the rim, which dropped them several hours
behinds the 1a team over the next 110 miles.

1a
Josh Caster took over for the 110 mile San
Felipe Loop through the whoops & rocks |
The
104a Team was running 2nd Overall, but a
blown rear shock & flat tires set them
back several hours |
 |
1a's
Josh Caster comes into the pits with a flat
tire, which is changed in less than 50 seconds
with Wayne Matlock taking over on Zoo Road |
The 1a of Josh Caster also suffered a rear flat
tire over the San Felipe 110 mile loop before handing
off the 700XX to Wayne Matlock, and after a short
50 second pit stop at the 355 mile mark, Matlock
was off heading to Borrego for a hand-off with Harold
Goodman.
We raced ahead to 417 mile mark to the Honda
Pits where Harold Goodman would once again swap
out with Wayne Matlock as the sun began to set,
so they also installed their high-powered BAJA
lights on the 700XX along with changing out the
Air filter and doing a quick inspection before
Wayne Matlock headed out into the darkness to
meet up with Wes Miller waiting at the 490 mile
mark.

|
As
the sunset behind the mountains, we chased
after Harold Goodman as he headed to the
Honda pits for the BAJA lights, air filter
change, and tire change. The road was packed
with slow traffic, so we had to make some
dramatic passes to keep ahead of Harold
as he raced along the road. Luckily, we
caught a free window of traffic and barely
beat him to the pit stop and the entire
team frantically started going over the
700XX installing the lights and checking
for any issues, and after just a few minutes
in the pits, Wayne Matlock set off again
into the darkness to meet up with Wes Miller
for the coast line leg. |

6a's
Brandon Brown and the 4a Team run within
minutes of each other into the night |
50 minutes after Matlock took off from the 417 mile
mark, the 4a Team came through and just over 2 minutes
back with adjusted time was Brandon Brown on the
6a Honda TRX 450R, and the battle was on between
the 4a and the 6a Team for the next hundred miles
before 6a ran out of gas on the beach after a botched
gas fill at the BAJA pits, which allowed the 4a
Team to take control of the 2nd spot.
