Wayne Matlock & Harold Goodman kick
off the 2008 SCORE race season with a win
on the Honda TRX 450R |
San Felipe, Mexico (3/21/2007) –
The second round of the 2008 SCORE desert series,
and the first of three rounds of ATV racing got
under way this past weekend on the Baja peninsula
in San Felipe, Mexico. The team of Wayne Matlock,
Harold Goodman and Mark Spaeth had an impressive
run, taking 1st place, while, despite injuries and
bike issues, the Temecula Motorsports team consisting
of Danny Prather, Mike Cafro, Chad Prull and Levi
Marana finished just minutes behind in 2nd.
The 232-mile track consisted of several sections
of graded roads, but also had it’s fair
share of rough, rocky sections, which took their
toll on the Temecula team. “Our rear shock
wasn’t functioning properly, which made
things really difficult,” said Mike Cafro.
“We were actually leading the race until
about 40 miles in when we hit a rough section
and Matlock’s team passed us,” Cafro
said disappointedly.

to leave the starting line |
Cafro’s team encountered several set backs
throughout the weekend, the first being the loss
of teammate Levi Marana due to injury. Levi had
a nasty crash during pre-running and suffered
a dislocated shoulder, which will require surgery
and keep him out of racing for the next 4-5 months.
Danny Prather also crashed during the pre-run
and broke his wrist, but toughed it out to ride
from the start to mile marker 61 before handing
over the quad to Cafro.
Meahnwhile, the Matlock/Goodman/Spaeth team had
no major issues during the pre-run or the actual
race. Wayne Matlock had a good run from the starting
line to mile marker 30 when Harold Goodman took
over. “Everything worked out really good
for us,” stated Goodman, who rode from mile
marker 30 to 93. “The only thing that really
happened was Mark Spaeth sort of stepped off the
quad during his section and had a hard time getting
the bike started again, but that didn’t
really effect us that much,” Goodman added.

in 2008 as he plans to race with Matlock
at nearly all the SCORE & BITD races
in addition to racing in the AMA ATV MX
Nationals & EDT Nationals |

Mike Cafro was tearing up the silt beds
in hopes of reeling in Wayne Matlock's team,
but a 2nd place finish keeps the team in
the points chase and hopefully Levi will
be back by the Baja 500 |
Goodman, who usually races the BITD series, which
does not allow racers to pre-run the course, notes
that being able to pre-run the courses in the
SCORE series is a big help for him. “Guys
like Wayne (Matlock) who race this series all
the time have a pretty good idea of where the
good lines are and what sections are going to
be rough, but since I’m not as familiar
with it, the pre-running really helps to familiarize
myself with the terrain.”

Goodman’s team finished the 232-mile race
in 1st place with an overall time of 5:05:09. The
Temecula Motorsports team finished just a little
more than seven minutes behind in 2nd place with
a time of 5:12:42, which is pretty impressive considering
the setbacks the team faced throughout the race.
The next race in the SCORE series is the legendary
Baja 500, which is scheduled for May 30th –
June 1st with drawings for starting positions
starting on April 19th. Check out www.score-international.com
