Yamaha / Golden West Cycle's Dustin Nelson place second overall at Yamaha Quad-X Round 8 |
Yamaha’s Dustin Nelson went 3-2 for the day and earned the second podium spot. In moto one Nelson spun off the gate and didn’t get the start he was looking for. He quickly caught up to the leaders and tagged on to second spot, Beau Baron’s bumper. About half way through the moto Nelson chose to back down the pressure on Baron because his quad was overheating from a mud packed radiator.
“I knew it was better to accept third than completely overheat the quad,” said Nelson.
The second moto went better for the California racer. After wheelie-ing a bit off the start, Nelson fell into place behind Haagsma who was leading.

“The race was exciting for the fans, but frustrating for me. The three of us (Nelson, Haagsma and Baron) were locked together for the entire twenty minutes plus one lap. My Yamaha worked really well, we’ve been lacking power all season compared to the H&M Motorsports team and have really been working on that. We are almost there and are leveling the playing field” regarded Nelson.
With the track being so fast and only having one good line, attempting to pass Haagsma would’ve been risky and possibly opened a gap for Baron. Knowing he needed the points to hold on to his points lead, Nelson stayed on Haagsma’s bumper finishing second in Moto 2 and earning second overall for the day.

Maxxis / H&M Motorsports Beau Baron placed third overall at Speedworld MX |
The number 549 of Beau Baron earned the final podium spot for the weekend. Baron went 2 – 3 on his H&M Motorsports / Maxxis Tire’s Honda. After getting second off the gate in the first moto, Baron put the pressure on Haagsma and could feel the pressure of Nelson behind him.
“I was right on Davie’s (Haagsma) bumper and had Nelson on mine for about four laps, but he started to struggle with something and backed off. Davie was riding really good and there just wasn’t any room to pass him,” said Baron.

The second moto didn’t go quite as smooth for Baron. Baron was running in third behind Haagsma and Nelson when he started to smell antifreeze from Nelson’s quad. He backed off a bit just in case Nelson broke down and began using different lines on the track. By the last few turns on the track Baron had picked up the pace again and in a last attempt to make the pass took and inside lined and pinned it. When Nelson made the turn Baron plowed into his rear tires on accident. Baron recovered from the scuffle and took third in the moto.
“My tires were working awesome, motor was pulling good. Our set up just keeps getting better and better,” regards Baron of his H&M Motorsports / Maxxis Tire’s Honda.

Lusardi Motorsports' Jason Fife was consistent both Motos placing fourth overall |
Jason Fife went 4-4 on his Yamaha to claim fourth for the day. Arizona racer, Evan Spooner rounded out the top five aboard his Honda.
Round nine will commence at Cahuilla Creek in Anza, California on Sunday October 21. Nelson will surely be looking for a win to enlarge the eight point lead he has over second spot in the chase for the championship. There is no doubt that the H&M team will also be looking to take the checkers and edge the Yamaha racer out of the number one spot.
