Team
FRE/KTM's Josh Upperman was the first
ATV racer to pass for the lead after
working his way through the tight corners
& out onto the long straight |
Nevertheless, Josh Upperman attacked in the
first few corners, and was the first to come
up the straight line. Quickly building up a
small gap on Jeremie Warnia. Nevertheless, Warnia
stayed calm and came lap after lap closer. The
Can Am team could benefit from a mistake of
the Upperman and never gave up the number one
position. Behind them, it was the France Yamaha
Factory team that claimed third place.
As the race evolved, so did the positions.
Team Drag’on with Matthieu Ternynck,
Clément Jay and Anthony Cheurlin placed
themselves in second position. The top three
was completed by TR Racing with Remacle, Lamet
and Mitchell. In the final hour of the three
hour stint, Team Drag’on was able to
take first place.

They won the heat before the French Yamaha Factory
Team of Couprie, Holmes and Maessen. Third place
came the Motoworks team. All three teams ended
just one minute apart of each other. Proving
the fierce battle the teams had during the first
heat. To be as efficient as possible, all teams
try to work out an optimal strategy, because
no work is allowed between the moto’s.
The ATV’s remain in the “Parc Fermée”.
As the sun was starting to go under. The
start of the second heat was given. The riders
had to complete a 5 hour stint. Four of those
five hours are ridden in the dark. Creating
an extra challenge for the riders and the
mechanics.

The Holeshot of the second heat, was again
for Josh Upperman and his KTM 450XC. Warnia
was again on his heels and took first place
over within the first hour of the second moto.
Since no work is allowed during the heats,
all work on the bike needs to be done during
the 12 hours of the race. Which gives no room
for technical malfunctions. Furthermore, fuel
stops come also into play. Most riders are
able to ride around an hour and half with
a full tank.
