Round 3:
The OMA Nationals round three green flag dropped in
Judah, Indiana on Saturday April 29 and 2005 series
champion Rob Zimmerman was left sitting on the line.
Zimmerman had some trouble starting his machine and
was dead last when he entered the rain soaked woods.
Jonathan Shaff launched his Honda to get the hole shot
and lead the pack in to the first turn and a sweeping
grass track section before passing through the scoring
tent and dropping in to a mixture of mud, trees, rocks
and roots that would challenge the racers for the next
two hours.

Todd
Krupinski |
Zimmerman and fellow Honda riding buddy Todd Krupinski
were racing with a vengeance and managed to pass everyone
in the first lap. Krupinski crossed the scoring checkpoint
first and Zimmerman was just there ten seconds later.
Kenneth Staake was fifty five seconds behind them on his
Yamaha with Jared Graves on his B Class Honda an impressive
five seconds behind the third place pro riders. Another
twenty seconds passed before Joshua Beavers and Ryan Smith
brought their Yamahas through the tent for scoring and
headed back out on lap two.

Josh
Beavers |
Krupinski continued leading until Zimmerman passed
him using a fast line at a log section. That pass was
short lived as Krupinski and Staake passed Zimmerman
on what he called “an awesome line through the
mud hole section.” The three riders would battle
for the next lap until Zimmerman passed Staake on a
huge uphill and beat him in to the woods. The two rubbed
going in to the woods, but Zimmerman pressed harder
and began putting some distance on Staake. Another lap
went by and Zimmerman passed Krupinski on the uphill.
This time he blew a corner at the top and stalled allowing
Krupinski to push past in to the lead again. After the
pass Zimmerman pushed hard and used the same fast line
on the log that he used the previous lap to pass Krupinski
for the lead. Both were riding hard and putting distance
between themselves and the rest of the riders.

3. Krupinski |
Zimmerman kicked up a stick that would spell disaster
for Krupinski. The stick damaged Krupinski’s radiator
and soon his Honda was indicating over temperature and
smelling of antifreeze. Krupinski pulled over to check
it out and Josh Beavers passed for second place. Beavers
was running strong, but he crashed and Krupinski regained
second place. Krupinski and Beavers were running close
on the last lap with Krupinski trying hard but struggling
to keep his overheating motor going. Beavers passed
Krupinski for the last time just before the finish to
take second place with a two second margin. Zimmerman
won the race a minute ahead of them.
The overnight and early morning rains helped make another
Bill Gusse track design in to a monster of slime, rocks,
roots, and trees. Nine riders managed to run eight laps
with the rest of the field making seven laps or less.
It was not pretty, but this is off road racing.
