Kyle Martin
was on the gas hard for round 5 but a
few run-ins with trees left him sidelined
for nearly 3 minutes which set him off
the mark, nevertheless he finished in
the 3rd spot on the podium
|
And the gremlins struck early for the champion from
Missouri. “Out there in the woods I kind of
got swapped around, hit a tree, and it killed the
motor,” recalled Martin. “The thing
wouldn’t fire for two minutes.” He said
“I let all the A class get by me and I finally
wiggled enough stuff and it finally fired. It started
right up and ran strong the rest of the day, but
I was two minutes behind the first lap.” With
the bike restarted. Martin was now in catch up mode.
“I knew I could catch them if things went
well,” he said.
Martin was closely watching the real time scoring
readout with seconds behind the leader each lap
and was clicking off some very fast times, including
the two fastest laps of the day on lap two and
three.
“I was noticing 30 seconds the first, then
ten seconds the laps after that,” he recalled.
“I caught up with John this last lap, but
I didn’t have a lot left in my tank. I was
riding a little wild and I had a line picked out
for him. I started getting set up for it and I
hit a tree. That was about two miles from the
end, so that gave him enough space to go on and
he didn’t have to worry about me.”
After a hard fought day and a little bad luck
Kyle Martin salvaged third place to take his third
podium finish of the season.
Fourth through seventh place went to local A
Class racers. Honda rider Chris Blough takes the
district fourteen bragging rights with the class
win and fourth overall, followed by the Yamaha
of fellow A Class rider Chris Lockhart. Chris
Wanstead was sixth overall aboard a Honda, while
Eric Wanstead picked up seventh place overall
and fourth in the class.

30+ KTM racer
Daniel Brendel finished all 8 laps of
the Wolverine XC course in just 2 hours
& 11 minutes & took 8th place
overall on the day
|
The final rider to complete eight laps of the
course was Thirty Plus rider Daniel Brendel, who
tooled his KTM through the finish line at two
hours, eleven minutes, and forty five seconds.
Brendel was followed by the KTM of fellow Thirty
Plus racer Lynn Smith, while the Spy Amsoil KTM
of B ATV class racer Garrett Arthur rounded out
the top ten.
The midpoint of the Parts Unlimited OMA Nationals
has now passed, and Bryan Hulsey has a slim lead
in the points chase. Three racers from Missouri,
including Hulsey, John Pitts, and defending champion
Kyle Martin are duking it out at the top of the
leader board. This series has a well deserved
reputation for tough, exciting races, and we have
not been disappointed this year.

The next round will pay a visit to the famous
Spring Creek Motocross track, followed by two
trips to Missouri sandwiched around Bedford, Indiana.
The season finale will be on Bill Gusse’s
home turf at the Bike Barn for the infamous Moose
Run. We have just passed the season half way mark,
and the competition is getting intense. Check
out omanationals.com for more information and
get yourself to the show. This is off road racing.
