Honolulu Hills Raceway is located in Taft, Ca. This
is where round 4 of the Yamaha / ITP Quadcross was held
this past weekend. It’s not known to be an ATV
race friendly venue due to its narrow and extremely
rough track. It doesn’t have too many jumps either.
Last year we were fogged in for the first part of the
morning, which delayed racing about thirty minutes.
This year I think everyone would have like to seen a
little fog since the temperatures soared into the 80’s
all weekend. Luckily a nice little breeze picked up
in the afternoons to help things out or did it. It dried
the track out to fast and made for very dusty racing
by the time the second moto rolled around.
Last year here Cyle Chislock edged out everyone and
claimed the win, and he was definitely looking for a
repeat. 16 pros made the trip to Taft including Ellis,
Nelson, Chislock and Schell. As they were loaded into
the gate, the anticipation grew to see who could outlast
the rough track that was getting rougher every single
lap. The gate dropped, and it was Chislock with the
Holeshot lead as they came into the first corner followed
closely by Nelson and Ellis.

#222
Cyle Chislock Grabbed the Holeshot in Both Motos |
Chislock put a couple quad lengths on Nelson and Ellis.
Jeremy Shell was hanging in there not far from Ellis
as he watched him work on Nelson. Nelson made a judgment
error and clipped a hay bail causing him to drop all
the way back to around the seventh spot. This gave Kory
Ellis an easy pass for the second spot and now he set
his sights on Chislock. With Nelson out of the way Kory
charged hard to make up ground and catch Chislock. Meanwhile
Schell was still hanging out behind Ellis in third.
Then Either Chislock ran out of steam or Kory picked
some up because Kory pulled up on his bumper and the
next corner just drove right around Chislock and took
over the lead. By this time they were starting to get
into some lappers so they had to be carefull and ride
smart. Nelson was still plugging away and moved back
up to fifth before time ran in the first moto.
By the time the gate dropped for the second moto the
track was just beat up, with holes and ruts and mostly
blue-grooved sections of the track. Once again Chislock
grabbed the Holeshot. This time he had a couple quad
lengths between himself and John Shafe in second. The
first lap it was Chislock out front again, John Shafe
in second, Jeremy Schell third, Kory Ellis fourth and
Josh Frederick in fifth. Dustin Terry who had some chain
problems in the first moto was right there with the
leaders off the start but broke a front steering knuckle
landing the first jump taking him out of the race early.
Dustin Nelson had a bad start and was running some where
around eight.

#53 Kory Ellis applying the pressure to #14 Jeremy
Schell |
At the start of lap two Shell and Ellis both moved
around Shafe and set there sights on Chislock. Chislock
hangs on for a couple laps then seems to start fading
and Schell and Ellis both get around him. At this point
Ellis said he knew all he needed was second place to
take the overall so he played it safe not trying to
battle with shell as the track was very unpredictable
and rough. Then he realized that Schell’s pace
was slowing down and he had to watch that Chislock didn’t
come back and challenge him. Then all of a sudden on
the back section of the track Chislock hit’s a
bad square edged rut and totally losses it. He went
down hard, but he got up, which was great to see. He
has some pretty good road rash and is bruised up pretty
good but should be ok. This took a little pressure off
Ellis until Frederick looked like he was making up time
on the leaders. Ellis knew he had to get up behind Schell
and start pushing him and risk getting tangled up in
order to keep the distance on Frederick.
In the end Schell took the second moto win with Ellis
taking second followed by Frederick third. This gave
Ellis the overall for the day and his second win in
the series. This moved Kory Ellis back to the top in
the points with Nelson in second followed by Jeremy
Schell.
