#53 Kory Ellis remains with Alba Action, but he switches to yellow for 2007 with a Suzuki LT-R450
The 2007 Yamaha / ITP Quadcross Season kicked off at Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, CA, and the weather was anything but perfect, which is typical for this time of year with the Santa Ana Winds gusting over 50mph causing a huge dust storm over the area, but it surely didn’t seem to affect the turnout as the opening round attracted over 230 entries as the series continues to grow in popularity on the west coast.

Of all the classes, the Pro Class had the largest turnout with 28 riders signing up to compete with several top pros on the entry list. One being, Suzuki’s newest addition, Dustin Wimmer, on the LT-R450 Quad Racer, which would be Wimmer’s first major motocross race since signing with Suzuki over the winter. Alba’s Kory Ellis was also in attendance, and he also made the switch to Suzuki for 2007, and it is reported that he plans on focusing on the Quadcross Series in 2007. Also, Lonestar Racing’s Keith Little also was in attendance, and he will remain on the Honda for 2007, but he recently switched to DASA for his engine work and also made the move to Fly Racing gear as well. Multi-time ITP Quadcross Pro Champion, Jeremy Schell, was also back in action on his new Epic Racing Honda 450R, and ofcourse, the defending Pro Champion, Yamaha’s Dustin Nelson, was in attendance along with a huge turnout of other local Pro racers.

#12 Keith Little

With such a huge Pro turnout, the first Moto was split into two qualifying heat races to determine gate selection for the Main with only the top 20 riders earning a spot on the front row of the starting gate while the remaining 8 riders would be forced to the back row

It was Alba’s Kory Ellis who grabbed the Holeshot for the first qualifier followed by Jeremy Schell, but it was not long before Dustin Nelson moved past Schell to take over the second spot. Ellis appeared to be faster than ever on his new Suzuki as he gradually spread the gap between him and Nelson and would easily go on to win the first qualifier. Dustin Nelson would hang onto second place with Jeremy Schell rounding out the top three.

In the second qualifier, it would be Lonestar Racing’s Keith Little grabbing the Holeshot on his Honda 450 with Suzuki’s Dustin Wimmer in hot pursuit, and two laps later, Wimmer was able to make the pass to take over the lead where he stayed till the checkered flag. Little went on to take the second place with Pro rookie, Jason Fife, making it into the top three.

With 28 riders on the starting gate that was two rows deep for the Pro Main, the gate dropped with Keith Little leading the way with yet another Holeshot into the Talladega turn followed by Dustin Wimmer with Chaos breaking out behind him, which sent four riders tumbling to the ground. Rookie Pro, Bubba Hustead, got the worst of it, but he was able to wall off the track, but had no idea where he was at the time. We are glad to report that he is doing fine now.

Defending ITP Quadcross Champion, Dustin Nelson, was feeling the pressure this weekend with Ellis, Little, and Wimmer in attendance
Meanwhile, out front, Little over shot the second turn, which opened the door for Wimmer to easily take over the lead and begin to pull away from Little followed by Dustin Nelson. Kory Ellis did not have one of the greatest starts, but he was quick to work his way through the pack, and catch up to Dustin Nelson in third. Nelson is a smooth rider, and hardly ever makes mistakes, which was made it difficult for Ellis to make the pass. Ellis began reaching for straws as he attempted to make a pass stick on Nelson, and eventually he was finally able to make his move on Nelson and set his sights on Little.

Dustin Wimmer began to slow down in the lead as he encountered lapped traffic, which allowed Little an Ellis to close the gap, but not before the checkered flag. Dustin Wimmer would go on to claim $1,500 Pro Purse with his first Pro race win on the LT-R450, and Keith Little was barely able to hold off Kory Ellis as they pair came through the finish line almost side by side rounding out the Podium followed by Dustin Nelson several seconds later in fourth and Cyle Chislock in fifth.

#222 Cyle Chislock

If the first round of racing is any sign of what to expect the rest season, the 2007 Yamaha / ITP Quadcross is looking to be the best race seasons ever, and round two is just a month away at a brand new track in Cottonwood, AZ on February 25th. If you couldn’t make the opening round, you surely won’t want to miss round two of the eleven round series wrapping up on December 2nd back at Glen Helen Raceway.
