Carisle, IA - Andy
Kyner, who was honored with the “2006 AMA
Promoter of The Year” award, came up with
the idea of starting his own ATV race series about
four years ago when he became frustrated with a
lack of ATV races in his home state of Iowa. Andy
had a feeling that there were probably other racers
in his area that shared his same dissatisfaction,
and that turned his frustration into determination.
Kyner decided to put his idea into action, and with
the support of his wife Tracy, and local dealership
VanWall Motorsports, the Iowa ATV Harescrambles
Series (IAHSS) was born.
“Traveling out of state all the time was
getting really expensive.” Stated Kyner.
“Plus, there were no series’ around
that were dedicated to ATV’s only, and when
we did race at dirtbike events, it didn’t
seem like the quads were really getting a fair
shake either. So one time when we were on our
way home from a race, I decided to start my own
ATV series.”

Youth
ATV Racers are split into two groups with
the 50cc ATVs racing for a 30 minutes, followed
by the 70-90cc group racing for 45 minutes,
which is a great concept |
Just
like the GNCC Series, the adult racing is
split into two groups as well with a Morning
& Afternoon race and both races are
2 hours in length |
Kyner decided he wanted to limit the series to
about seven races that would take place between
April and October. “We didn’t want
to have too many races so it wouldn’t get
to hectic or expensive, and it also gives racers
the time to attend other events throughout the
season.” Said Andy. Once Kyner had some
of the details worked out he started calling local
landowners about using their tracks for his series.
“We got lucky and got some really good tracks
to race at.” He said. The series travels
all over Iowa but hosts quite a few of them in
the Des Moines area. “Location helps a lot
because there aren’t any other series’
around in the state that are dedicated to quads,
plus riders come from surrounding states.”
Said Kyner. Andy estimates that 40% of the racers
at his series actually come from the state of
Missouri. “Missouri has a strong racing
history. A lot of those guys have been involved
in racing for years, and they were really a big
help in getting this series going. We really learned
a lot from them.” Andy said gratefully.

C&D
Racing's Colby & Dusty Kostman have
been long time ATVriders.com sponsor and
they also sponsor the IATVHSS as they are
fully committed to the sport. On top of
it, they also race in the series with Colby
running in the B Class while Dusty competes
in the Women's Class, and she just wrapped
up the Championship

About half way through the first season, Andy
added another major sponsor to his growing list
of supporters. Colby Kostman, a local racer, and
owner of C&D Racing thought Kyner’s
series was a great idea, so C&D Racing came
on board and soon became fully engaged in the
series. Colby and his wife, Dusty, both race in
the series. “Being fully involved with this
helps us connect with the riders.” Said
Kostman. “When we are at the track we help
the racers with suspension set up and other miscellaneous
issues they may have with their quads.”

Series
Sponsors banners are clearly & neatly
displayed at the events, which gives it
more of a national series feel than a local
Iowa racing series
|
Sponsor support is a big part of what makes this
series work. “We try to get as many sponsors
for the series as we can to try and keep the costs
down for the riders.” As the cost of racing
seems to increase each year, Kyner’s strategy
has made a difference in keeping things affordable
and makes his events more attractive to local
racers and their families. “The series is
a big advocate for women’s and kids classes.”
Stated Kostman. “Keeping things reasonably
priced helps attract new riders and get more families
involved in the sport.” Added Kyner.
