ITP Championship
ATV Mud Racing Makes a Splash in South Carolina
::Continued::
Don’t let the smaller scale fool you, this
is a highly specialized type of racing and most
that enter the competition have prepped their ATV’s
to handle the deep mud and water beyond what the
factory stock machines come equipped with. Of course
the Arctic Mud Pro utility ATV is popular as it
sets the standard for an off the showroom floor
capable racer. With air snorkels rising above the
machines, highly tuned engines and tires that just
plain look mean, the racing takes on a menacing
sight and sound, especially for one who had never
before witnessed this type of event!
Just like motocross or cross country racing, there
seems to be certain set ups that everyone agrees
upon but that’s where the similarities end.
Tire choices are varied but all feature deep and
wide patterns to churn through the muck.

ATV
mud racing isn't just for the big kids,
the ITP Championship Mud Racing Series also
offers classes for the youth & Lexi
Wylie claimed wins on a Yamaha Grizzly in
the Youth 1 Class (above right) along with
another win with a Can-Am DS250 in the Youth
2 Class |
The riding style itself is about what you would
expect, including finding racers standing on the
seat or using every bit of power they have to
keep the front ends digging deep. About the only
thing I could find that seemed to be equal on
every racer was the smile peeking out from under
the helmets! It looked like fun and they were
showing it as they all battled bar to bar for
the chance at a win! Class after class would be
staged and called to the line based on engine
displacement. When 1000cc’s of power is
let loose side by side into a frothy pit of water,
things get crazy and fast!

Mud
Racers hang on and try to control their
powerful ATVs as they tear through the thick
muddy water in hopes to be the first to
the checkered flag |
The racers made the riding part look easy but that’s
usually the case in most forms of racing. It was
however clear that it took some experience and skill
to pilot your way through deep holes and uneven
ground that you could not see. Watching the racers
hang off the quad to help a tire bite in for a turn
provided many gasps from the crowd as it always
appeared the rider was one second away from falling
off! Expertly through, the round after round of
racing provided spectators with hours of entertainment
and great competition without any injuries except
to pride when one failed to do well or made a mistake
that couldn’t be hidden!

Cat's Beverly Hawkins claimed the Women's
Class Win |
Kenneth
Miller finished out front in the Super Mod
Class |
The venue of course sometimes makes the event
and at this round, one could not ask for a better
facility to hold an event. Carolina Adventure
World hosted round #2, and the mix of racers and
those there for just a weekend of riding mixed
seamlessly. With motocross tracks, Kids tracks,
100 miles of trails, camping and more all available,
this event could easily be an action packed family
fun event of the season.

The series holds 6 events in 2010, and round 3 has

along with the CMR swamp cross race. For info on
the park go to www.muddersmagoffroadpark.com
Also for those interesting in competing in future
rounds of racing, be sure to check out www.championship-mudracing.com
We had a blast watching things unfold and if
this event is any indication of how well other
events are run, everyone should have an equally
good time if you can attend or enter one of the
upcoming events!
