Cypress, CA (4/15/2009) - Dustin
Nelson scored a double victory at the second round
of the 2009 ITP QuadCross series in Buckeye, Ariz.
on Easter Sunday, April 12, by winning
the race while also giving the new fuel-injected
YFZ450R its first professional ATV motocross win.
The Yamaha-sponsored rider did it in
convincing style too, grabbing the holeshot and
leading every lap of the eight-lap main event
at Arizona Cycle Park. Nelson's win, along with
his strong second in the first event of the season
last March, means he is now tied with rival Jeremie
Warnia for the points lead in the eight-round
ATV motocross series.
Desert rain showers on Friday night turned the
MX track muddy for Saturday's practice sessions,
but the weather returned to perfect on Sunday.
With the proper setup on his new YFZ and plenty
of motivation, Nelson started the race day off
right by taking the holeshot and winning his heat
race over Warnia. This gave Nelson his choice
of gates for the main event, and he made the most
of it (with plenty of help from his YFZ450R's
tremendous horsepower) by taking yet another holeshot.
He likewise once again sparred with rival Warnia
through most of the event but prevailed during
an exciting last lap to bring home the win for
Yamaha by scarcely a second, with the pair massively
gapping the rest of the field in the process.
"Good thing I got a strong start!" Nelson
exclaimed afterwards. "On the last lap, Jeremie
and I went flying side by side up a hill. I backed
it off to launch smoothly over a jump and he launched
ahead for a second, but the impact slowed him
down and I was able to hold on for the win."
This is Nelson's first year on the new race-ready
YFZ450R. "The engine is much better because
of the fuel injection - it seems to have a smoother
power delivery and is easier overall to ride,"
he said. "Also, the 'R' model has several
handling characteristics that I like, such as
the ease of sliding the bike into and through
rough corners, where it feels more stable and
flat."
