Europe (5/20/2008)
- Sunday the 18th of May saw the Filtec GYTR Team
Yamaha racing team travel North to Dean Moor Motocross
Park near Whitehaven, Cumbria, the West Cumbria
MXC promoting the 3rd round of the 2008 ACU British
MMX Quad Championship at the picturesque but demanding
circuit on the edge of the Lake District. Holding
2nd place in the series coming in to this round
but having aggravated a back injury at the opening
European Championship round the previous weekend,
team rider Ricky Tordoff still maintained a positive
approach coming in to the weekend, and as the
crew headed home to Elland after a frantic days
racing this positive attitude had bourne fruit,
Ricky taking a fantastic 4th overall to extend
his lead over 3rd place to twenty four points.
Race One
Glorious sunshine was the order of the
day as the riders took to the circuit in timed
practice, Ricky securing 9th pick of gate after
a few modifications to the Lonestar / Ohlins
suspension settings to tame the demanding track.
A poor start by his standards left Ricky mid
pack around the first corner, Ricky completing
his first full circuit in 12th position with
a lot of work to do. Using the excellent traction
of the Goldspeed tyres in the loose surface,
Ricky quickly settled in to a rhythm and gradually
began making up places, moving past Chris North
on lap two and quickly closing the gap to Justin
Reid and Michael McAneney in front. Passing
both Reid and McAneney for 9th within two laps
and continuing to scythe his way through the
field, Ricky past early race leader Lindsay
Duke, Simon Hammersley and James Behan on the
same lap to move up to 6th. With half the twenty
five minute plus two lap moto still to run and
the four way battle for 2nd place within his
sights, Ricky pushed hard over the next two
laps and began to close the gap before armpump
set in and slowed his progress. Forced to maintain
a steady pace and unable to ride at full pace
for the next three laps, the arm-pump finally
subsided enabling Ricky to quickly close in
on the battling quartet, and as the two-lap
board came out Ricky had caught and passed David
Cowan and David Hammersley for 4th position,
comfortably holding the position to the chequered
flag for a valuable eighteen points.

Another mid pack start for the final race of the
day left Ricky circulating in 11th position at
the end of the opening lap. With the Lonestar
/ Ohlins suspension working overtime on the rough
and rutted surface, Ricky quickly moved up through
the ranks, James Behan, Michael McAneney and Carl
Bunce demoted over the opening half of the race
to leaving Ricky 8th. Riding with severe back
pain and with arm pump once again setting in,
Ricky nevertheless continued on a relentless pace
to catch the rider in 7th, but struggling to safely
manoeuvre the bike to make a pass stick, wisdom
replaced valour and Ricky relaxed in to a comfortable
pace to the end of the race, crossing the finish
line after fourteen fast and furious laps for
a well deserved 8th place.
Ricky Tordoff
“ Given the circumstances with
my back coming in to this weekend I’m
really happy with my overall performance. I
got a poor start and really bad arm pump half
way in to the first race and had to ease of
a bit, but it disappeared with three laps to
go and I was able to push through to 4th. In
the second race my back was very stiff and once
the arm pump set in I couldn’t safely
push hard enough to make up any more places.
At that stage I decided it was better to finish
and extend the gap between 3rd and myself in
the series so I just cruised to the end. I’d
like to thank Richard and Ian at Pro-Prep for
doing a great job with the bike and it worked
perfectly all weekend. The next round is at
Hawkstone in six weeks so I’ll be aiming
for podium results there.”
