McClure raced the final round of the WORCS
Series on the Yamaha YFZ450 ATV |
Kaska, PA (10/22/2009) - The year
is finally winding down for me after a long hard
season of racing. From January till now I have competed
in 19 national events both from the east and west
coasts. Now with one race to go in each series I
found myself in Mesquite Nevada for the final round
of the WORCS racing series. This race however would
be a little different than other WORCS races. At
Glen Helen my Honda blew up beyond repair, and based
on a budget that is running low, I decided I would
have Chris Borich haul my Yamaha YFZ450 to the track.
He was going out to try WORCS again and agreed to
take it with him.
The track in Mesquite was similar to what us
GNCC guys hate…Florida! It was a sandy track
that gets very rough with quad swallowing whoops!
The motocross had a few big jumps, and was very
fun. After practice I realized my Yamaha was a
little down on power for the track (due to running
a stock motor), and also I was a little short
on suspension travel due to the size of the whoops.
I am super confident in my EXIT suspension tho,
and I knew I cud still perform well on it.
The start was gated, and I came out around mid-pack.
I was somewhere around 10th going into the off-road
section. The track was super-dusty, and it was
hard to see unless you were right behind someone.
I was able to make some passes early on John Shafe
and Ryan Piplic. I then got by Chris Borich who
was stuck in some trees. When the time came to
pit I was sitting in sixth.
As the race started winding down I was starting
to run out of steam. My Yamaha worked ok, but
I think my Honda would have worked better. The
YFZ was a little short and kept falling in the
big holes just wearing me down. I pushed and rode
as hard as I could but Josh Frederick ended up
lapping me on the last lap. Nearing the finish
I heard another rider coming on strong, I figured
it was another top guy lapping me so I backed
off a little because I didn’t have much
left. When he came by it was the number 7 of Robbie
Mitchell. I was like noooo! I left Robbie pass
me taking away, my fifth place position. I dug
deep and pushed him hard through the final turns,
but I couldn’t make a pass.

would end the day in 6th place, giving him
a 7th place finish for the season for the
WORCS series |
I ended the day in sixth place. I was happy with
the finish. My YFZ worked flawless from start
to finish even though the woods setup was a little
off. The sixth place finish was enough to secure
me a 7th place finish for the year in the class.
This was my first full year running WORCS, and
I have to say it is an awesome series with some
really great people. They fellow racers are super-nice
and will offer to help you with anything. I want
to give a special thanks to Johnny and the guys
at Motoworks for the help in the pits all season,
as well as Team MCR, these two teams made it possible
for me to race the whole series and I can’t
thank them enough.
Now with little time this week I will be getting
ready for the final GNCC in Crawfordsville, IN.
I want to mention that an amateur WORCS racer
Alex Minninger is coming out all the way from
Washington, to run the schoolboy class. Make sure
you welcome him to the GNCC series! Well I got
some work to do so take care and see you at Ironman!
