Weston Beach Race Set To Reach New Heights

United Kingdom(10/17/06) - Working together with North Somerset Council, and a host of local organisations and businesses, RHL Activities Ltd have lined up what promises to be one of the most fiercely competitive weekend's of off road motorcycle sport seen anywhere in the world. Over 1500 entries across five classes will take part in the annual two day event set on the golden sands of Weston-super-Mare. In addition to the main race programme the spectacular American quad freestyle team, who thrilled us all in 2005, are back to blow our minds. The H Bomb Squad have returned to the beach where they will attempt the first 360 degree flip with a quad seen in Europe.

Entries for the 2006 Weston Beach Race have reached new heights in both quantity and quality. The 24th running of the traditional end of season bonanza is set for the ultimate battle when arguably the worlds two best off road motorcycle racers go head to head around the 3.5 mile track. Ten times world motocross champion, and 2004 beach race winner, Stefan Everts from Belgium, will line up against double world enduro champion and 2002 solo and quad class beach race victor David Knight. With Everts heading for retirement at the end of this year, and Manxman Knight, who has gone through the entire 2006 world enduro championship unbeaten, this could be prove to be the only time these two giants of the sport face each other in genuine competition. But don't think it's just going to be a two horse race. 2005 winner, and multi enduro world cham! pion Paul Edmondson from Lichfield is another that will be out to take top honours. Add in to the mix the masters of the Le Touquet Beach Race in Northern France, Jean Claude Mousse and Arnoud Demeester, and a strong contingent from the USA, it would take a brave man to wager more than 50p on the outcome.

Over 70 riders from the region will also take part in the main solo race. Top British Motocross championship contender John May from Bristol will probably spearhead the local attack. Andy Frost, who is also from Bristol, and Weston-super-Mare's Rob Drinkwater are also both seeded riders.

The quad class is no less impressive with multi British champion and Weston victor Paul Winrow heading a field of over 300 as he looks to continue his recent dominance of the four wheel fraternity. Newly crowned British Quad Champion John Mitchell, Jason Macbeth and Willy Waggott will all have their eyes on the main prize. All four UK stars will have to keep their throttle cables stretched to the max if they are to overcome the American challenge of Pro-ATV riders Dana Creech and 2005 GNCC Champion John Natalie.

Bristol's Steve Ford and Phillip Difford both campaign Yamaha machinery, albeit of vastly different power outputs, in the Q1 quad class, while in the two man Q2 class Andy Frost attempts to finish both two and four wheel categories when he shares with James Munden. Minehead's Steve and Justin Atkins take the more agricultural route to when they tackle the 3.5 mile course on their Honda's in the 4 x 4, Q4 class.

In conjunction with the quad race will be the sidecar motocross class. No less than 50 of these three wheel machines will attack the hills and dunes with Andrew Seward and Simon Rogers aiming for top spot after narrowly missing out on the podium last year. Also keep a look out for outfit no.130, which has top grand prix solo star Gordon Crockard giving passenger Kenny Gardner the ride of his life!

It's a family affair for Weston-super-Mare's Paul Rutherford and Vickie Harris in the sidecar class. The father and step daughter finished a highly creditable 26th in 2005 and have their sights set on cracking the top twenty this time around.

Once again the youth riders also get their chance to tackle the Weston sand. Keep an eye out for tomorrow's champions as over 175 young riders, aged from 6 to 14 years old, tackle the Cardiff Volkswagen sponsored 65cc and 85cc races.

Rian Cooper from Bristol tackles the 85cc big wheel class, as does Che Hebson from Weston-super-Mare.
