Rath catching some air |
Hutchinson, MN (9/26/2007) -
Daryl Rath wins both Pro Class and the 25+ Class
piloting his new Polaris Outlaw 525 for the first
time.
One week after Daryl Rath showed his skills
on a utility 4x4, he decided to put his sport
quad Supermoto skills to the test. Daryl Rath
made the long haul from Minnesota to participate
and support this event for the third year. Daryl
had reached an agreement with Polaris just a
few weeks prior to build a bike and compete.
While the Supermoto Pro Class rules are unique
allowing open displacement the agreement with
Polaris to run the Outlaw 525S helped level
the playing field. Rath and his crew worked
all weekend to fine-tune his new Baldwin Motorsports
powered Polaris Outlaw 525. With a thanks to
a CT Racing exhaust personally delivered by
Alan Knowles late Saturday and a custom intake
from Home Depot (patent pending) the Rath crew
was able to put the power to the Duro Tires.

The 25+ class seems to be the "warm-up"
for quite a few of the Pros like Jason Anderson,
Nic Granlund and Daryl Rath. Anderson and Granlund
had decent starting positions for the 29 rider
heat race while Rath had last pick and started
in the back. Supermoto start rules are quite
different then other forms of racing- while
a full gate in MX is twenty riders wide- Supermoto
grids are often four riders wide and up to ten
rows deep. Granlund pulled the holeshot checked
out from the rest of the field running a flawless
race, while Rath had to work hard to fight through
the field. By the end of the 6 lap heat race,
Rath had made it to 4th place and insured himself
of a front row start for the main event. In
Sundays main event, Rath grabbed the holeshot
with Granlund right behind. Rath showing the
veteran that he is lead from green to checkers.
There were 22 Pros battling it out this weekend.
Heat 1 Frank Batista (Honda/Sparks) made his
way to the front early and seemed to be on his
way to a heat race win until a slight bobble
in the whoops opened the door for Daryl Rath
and Shawn Bigham (YamahaYFZ). Bigham and Batista
battled it out for a few laps until Batista
made a pass coming off the dirt. Meanwhile,
Rath built a nice size lead and went on to win
Heat 1 with Batisita in second and Bigham rounding
out the top three. Heat 2 started with a bang
when Kenny Pacheco took the holeshot and jumped
out to an early lead on his DASA powered LT-R450.
Landon Hurst made a nice transition from MX
to Supermoto as he moved his way through the
group and passed Pacheco for the lead, on his
way to his first Supermoto heat race win. Pacheco
finished second and secured a front row start
for the main event. Nic Granlund got tangled
with a rider causing a wreck that knocked him
out of the heat race forcing him to the back
of the main.

In the main event Daryl Rath took the holeshot
and immediately pulled away from the crowd while
the rest of the top 5 battled it out for position.
Batista found himself in 2nd place in a battle
with Hurst. Hurst passed Batista coming out
of the dirt and they made their way through
the fast and technical road section. Hurst slipped
up in the marbles sending him into the bails
knocking him out of the main and almost collecting
Batista in the process. Nic Granlund was working
his way through traffic and setting his sites
on Batista. On lap 9 Batista's lost his seat
was making things even more difficult on this
demanding course. Granlund and Batista battled
for a few laps until Granlund made the pass
on Batista just before the white
flag. Rath cruised to the main event win with
an impressive 23 second lead, followed by Granlund
and Batista. Kenny Pacheco held on to a top
5 finish ..
As Daryl Rath took the checkers, tossed his
goggles it is appearant his 40th birthday next
week will not be slowing him down anytime soon.
