Minneapolis, MN (8/01/06) - Last year, Polaris introduced the full-size Sportsman X2 500 EFI, the first ATV with a transforming seat for 2-up riding. The Sportsman X2 was built on the best-selling Sportsman 500 platform. For 2007, Polaris will add an 800 EFI model to the line for added power.

Equipped with a powerful, liquid-cooled, twin cylinder Polaris Liberty engine with Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI), the Sportsman X2 800 EFI will have all the features of the first-year offering including the popular “stow and go” second seat that folds into the rear cargo box in seconds to add cargo capacity with only one rider aboard. The system enables riders to transport gear, crew and family, to and from a worksite, hunting or camp site or campsite.

“The Sportsman X2 is unmatched in the industry in terms of ride, handling and versatility for one or two people making the first-year model a huge success,” said Mike Dougherty, general manager for the ATV division. “Offering the X2 with an 800 EFI engine will appeal to customers who want the same versatility but more power.”

Similar to the other Sportsman models, the Sportsman X2 will be offered with different purchasing options. The Sportsman X2 800 EFI will be offered in Standard and Deluxe versions, while the Sportsman X2 500 EFI will be available in Standard, Mossy Oak™ and Deluxe.

The Sportsman X2 engines are equipped with EFI making the vehicle easy to start, more responsive and reliable in the type of rugged, off-road terrain that demands sudden and extreme changes in power and variation in speed. It also gives a Sportsman rider significantly better slow-speed drivability.

The EFI system compensates automatically for changes in altitude and temperature, ensuring the vehicle starts readily in all conditions from –25 degrees F to 120 degrees F and at altitudes up to 10,000 feet. Sportsman ATVs equipped with EFI also use standard 87-octane fuel and get better gas mileage than non-EFI engines.

Transforming seat allows conversion from Utility use to 2-Up in 30 seconds and the integrated rear heavy-duty cargo box features a 400lb capacity.

Especially critical for 2-up riding is the Polaris premium suspension on the Sportsman X2 models. Like other Sportsman models, the Sportsman X2s has a wide front wheel stance and a MacPherson strut front suspension. Suspension travel is 8.2 inches, giving riders a smoother ride and better handling as the front tires maintain more consistent contact with the ground.

In the rear is Polaris’ long-travel, Independent Rear Suspension (IRS). This fully-independent, progressive-rate rear suspension delivers the legendary Sportsman smooth ride, 8.5 inches of travel and 11 inches of ground clearance. To minimize rear-end squat under acceleration, the Sportsman X2 models feature A-arms and 2-stage springs that are angled to improve the ride by creating wheel travel that moves up and back. Combined with the front suspension and wide front wheel stance, the system dramatically enhances the handling of the vehicle and optimizes the ride when carrying a passenger.

The Sportsman X2 models also are equipped with a Polaris Variable Transmission (PVT). PVT is the industry’s all-time best-selling automatic transmission. The PVT continually senses engine speed and vehicle torque load and provides the proper amount of power to the drive wheels.

The exclusive Polaris VERSATRAC system enables the rider to choose Turf mode, 2-wheel drive or On Demand All-Wheel Drive (AWD) by a thumb switch on the handlebar. When in Turf mode, the Sportsman X2 provides 20 percent tighter turns and minimizes damage to soft terrain. For rougher terrain, the On Demand AWD system automatically engages when the rider needs more forward traction. It reverts to 2WD automatically when AWD is no longer needed.

The Polaris Engine Braking System (EBS), which is standard on the Sportsman X2, assists in braking on steep inclines. Additionally, the X2 Deluxe model features Polaris’ Active Descent Control (ADC) system that provides four-wheel braking when the vehicle is in AWD, is operating at speeds below 15 mph and there is no throttle being applied.

The X2 models features front storage and a rear dump box with a dump assist to make hauling, carrying and dumping materials and loads effortless. The front storage box can carry up to 90 lbs. and the rear heavy-duty cargo box, with a 400 lb. capacity, is ideal for moving firewood, rocks and landscaping materials.
